  • OP perhaps amend title to Disassembly.

      Corrected. Ta

  • These should generally come with any repair item, advertised as free tools. However the raw item without the free tools is generally cheaper.

That said I have like 3-4 of these kits, and for screen repair or battery it’s better to get the kits with free tools for the screen or battery adhesives which they also come with.

  • I got a zillion of these things from all the phone screens I've had to repair previously. Typically it comes free with the screen you order from ebay. Although with these new phones these days, probably a good idea to invest in a hot air gun with the insane amount of glue used….

I have an old iPhone 6 now its touch screen is playing up, often not responsive to touch. Apple quoted $190 to replace the touch screen, I don't feel like paying that amount as it is out of warranty anyway and no longer using this phone. However I like to try out one of those DIY screen repair kits, have seen different kits from eBay with various price range, do you have one you can recommend? Cheers.

      • Is it outside 2 years Australian Consumer Warranty or just 1 year Apple Warranty?

        • iPhone 6 is over 3 years old.

Just so you know, the cheap and expensive ones are all the same product, just different sellers. They’ll all be the same, just make sure it is the screen and digitiser, and comes with free tools. The process is really easy as well, just follow ifixit’s guide.
If you have a hot air gun or hair drier it’ll make the first time opening process easy.

Maybe link me something on eBay and I’ll check if it’s okay.

        • Will search on eBay and let you know.

      • If the touch screen isn't working it sounds like iPhone 6 touch disease. Look that one up but a screen replacement won't fix that. Try contacting Apple and see what your options are given its a manufacturing defect and see where it gets you.

This issue was fixed in the revised S model.

        • I got the Apple genius look at the problem and he suggested touch screen problem and the cost is $189 to replace the screen, including the digitiser as well I am guesisng.

      • I got the iPhone 6plus screen repaired in a Sydney shop for 80$, it's pretty good.

        • You can buy the non-genuine replacement LCD+glass+earpiece for $35-45 from eBay and spending 15 min to DIY. $40 profit.

        • @andylch: I’d rather pay a person who has done it a hundred times than run into an unknown problems on a very complicated device and waste my time looking through all the material to fix it. Each to their own I guess.

        • @StiffHindQuarters:

It is a super easy job, even my grandpa can do this within 30 min under my supervision.
iPhone LCD and housing are much more simpler than you think.

        • @andylch: You'll need to retain the original home button (assuming its not cracked/damaged) if you want touch ID to work properly, can be a little tricky first time.

        • @BargainKen:

Yes, heat it up a little bit with a hair dryer, not that difficult.

        • @andylch: That ribbon cable tears so easily.

  • Is it easy and low risk to do own iPhone 6plus screen repair? Will touchid still works after 3rd party screen replacement ?

    • +7

In the last couple of years I've done 5 iPhone screen replacements.

It's easy and low risk if you buy a 3rd party screen that comes preinstalled with the front camera, proximity sensor, speaker and frame. It's a bit finicky to do a screen replacement if you have to salvage those parts from the old screen assembly. I've done 5 iPhones (5, 5c, 5s, 6S and 6S+), and it can be frustrating and time consuming to go the salvage route. The parts are now so cheap that it's only a few dollars extra to get one that comes with the camera, proximity sensor and speaker preinstalled. They advertise if the come with those parts and the rule of thumb is if it says it comes with the speaker and camera that it will come with the frame and proximity sensor without saying.

It may also come with a home button, but you do not want to replace that if the old one still works. It's really important to use your old home button, as only that one will be able to use touch ID.

Make sure to watch a youtube tutorial on how it's done before starting the job.

      • Wow many thanks to your tips and reply. This gives me more confident to do DIY repair

I'll PM shortly , need to ask which one (replacement parts) to buy

      • wow, and to think they charge like 250$ for iphone screen replacements ;\

      • Regarding what you said about salvaging components, is that am Apple specific thing? I have a z5 and might be going down that track, and it looks like the packages are either screen digitiser only or digitiser and lcd, no mention of anything else.

        • I'm not familiar with the Z5, but many phones made over the last few years will put the components that face forward as parts of the whole LCD screen assembly and route the ribbon cables all together - this saves space and weight. Most new phones fuse the digitizer with the LCD itself also to save weight/space.

It's something you will need to read a forum post or two about, and also watch youtube tutorials on the replacement itself to really familiarise yourself with the phone and what needs to be done before starting.

        • @c0balt: yeah I was up until now just going to change the digitiser on it s own, and yes it's fused even though it's lcd and not AMOLED, what a pain that is and to get it right it's difficult without having dedicated equipment. I didn't realise the whole assembly is as cheap as 50 bucks though, for that price it's not worth the monkeying around. Last time I checked was for an AMOLED for a nexus and it was at least 100 bucks

  • Damn, won't work on 7 and 8 iphones :(

    • It will work with every iPhone AFAIK. They all use pentalobe screws to secure the screen to the chassis, and small philips head for internal parts. Also the suction cups and pry tools work on all phones.

    • You'll need a heatgun as well for those. Water-proofing isnt magic :) Lots of rubber seals and glue.

  • Professional screwdrivers… Lol.

    • For professional shoppers

  • I have a handful of these kits now. I get one with just about every replacement screen I buy.
I don't smash my phone screen, but my friends and family do… a lot!

  • Had a massive stash of these after the amount of screens I was replacing, to the point where I had to email the sellers asking them to NOT include the tools. In saying that, these aren't very good and became unreliable for me after being used even once. If you're regularly doing iPhone repairs, you're better off spending more to get a decent quality set that will actually last. Got mine for $25 about 4 years ago and have only had to replace one screwdriver in that time.

  • So I've been looking for a 5 star screw driver to open my MacBook air 11 inch, would this be compatible

  • Can this be used for iPhone SE?

    • These aren’t specifically for any phone. It’s a general kit with Pentalobe screwdriver for the Apple screws. Have a look at ifixit’s video for an idea of what you need. It’s all there.

  • These are junk. you can just about bodge a phone repair with them before you have to throw them away. Much better to get a proper set.
