Poll: Best Laptops and Ultrabooks under $1000 in 2018

Moderators at OzBargain have decided to run yearly polls to decide the best products in popular categories that get asked repeatedly in the forum. Our aim is to have a central thread where users can vote on the items, suggest options and also change their vote throughout the year. The polls will end once the year is over.

Question

What is the best laptop or ultrabook for 2018 under $1000?

Once again we'll discuss the best value-for-money laptops under $1000. Last time we had a poll for laptops for primarily school or university students but this time around we'll make the poll slightly more general, and take suggestions for anything that you consider great value for under the $1000 mark.

The poll winners for 2017's best laptops are:

  1. Lenovo Thinkpad E470
  2. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air
  3. Dell Inspiron 11 3000

With new CPU's and chipsets having arrived this year, I will be interested to see what products Ozbargain will recommend.

  • 🔋 One of the most important features for a uni / school device is an all-day battery life, saving you the hassle of having to charge in the middle of your day and also not have to carry around a charger;

  • 💪 Consider the trade-offs between performance over portability. Larger laptops are easier to type on, have a range of storage expansion options and graphics card options, while smaller laptops are more portable and easier to carry around, but usually aren't as powerful.

  • 💻 Some devices have different form factors, ranging from a traditional clamshell, to a two in one detachable form factor or convertible.

Tips: Found a device you liked? You can click on the 'Related Products' section to view current or active deals, and see forum discussions related to it.

  • Don’t see a device that you like in the poll options? Make a (sensible) suggestion that fits the $1000 budget and we’ll add it to the list
  • You are allowed to change your vote.

How to make a Poll suggestion: Fill out this little box which appears on the top of your usual commenting textbox.

  • Suggested Lenovo Thinkpad E480

    The new Thinkpad E480 by Lenovo is the new successor to the much loved Thinkpad E470. It generally costs around $1k, with specifications ranging from a 8th Generation Intel Core i3-7130U (dual core), i5-8250U (Quad core) to a Core i7 8550U (Quad core, Hyperthreading).

    It also can be fitted with an optional 2GB AMD RX550 discrete GPU, has new USB Type C charging ports, an updated design that looks sleeker and with less bezels, an additional M.2 PCIE based storage option that can be used alongside an ordinary SATA based 2.5" drive, and finally — optional backlit keyboard.

    The display is either an IPS panel with 1080p resolution or a horrible TN-based 1366 x 768 panel which you should absolutely should not pick.

    Weight starts at 1.75 kg and with a decent selection of 1 x USB 3.0 Type-C port, two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2 port, HDMI, MicroSD, Audio jack and Ethernet networking.

    Notes:
    - Traditional clamshell laptop with a good keyboard and good amount of IO ports
    - Long battery life, up to 13 hours claimed
    - Semi-lightweight 14 inch laptop suitable for most people, with the exception of content creators requiring high gamut displays and gamers needing powerful graphics cards

    Xiaomi Mi Notebook air 13.3 has been revised again recently to include the 8th gen chipset. Otherwise it's the same as the somewhat recent 'fingerprint edition.

    Under $1000, 8gb ddr4 (2x4 removable I believe), 256gb SSD, dedicated graphics (2gb mx250, which I find excellent considering the size), full HD screen, great CPU.

    Build quality is fantastic, almost identical to the MacBook air, but a little thinner and lighter. Also less sharp on the edges. Keyboard is backlit.
    Battery lasts a very long time, and I have achieved ~9hrs of light internet and document use.

    Earliest to compare to the MacBook air.
    Screen is much nicer, with thin borders (exception being the bottom).
    The lid hinge is a little below the quality of the MacBook. I'll lift without needing to hold the body, but it feels a little loose to me.
    Easily outperforms the MacBook, however it does run hotter under medium stress - I haven't experienced any throttling yet though which is nice.
    Quiet, but the fans are audible under stress.

    Overall, this competes with most other brands in hardware, while keeping a smaller design and premium build for the same price.

    • Where did you find the notebook air with the 8th gen chipset? I’ve been waiting for it to be revised myself but can only find 7th gen like this one here.

    • Hey I was wondering if you had a good experience with geekbuying when purchasing the xiaomi? Any issues with shipping or product quality?

      • Sorry, only ordered one thing from them so far, and have yet to get it.
        Got my laptop from Lightinthebox. Everything went smooth, other than a slight delay. It was a presale item though, so I accepted it. They also "forgot" to show the shipping fee, which prevented it from being taxed when it entered Australia.

    Suggested Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air (2018)

    Xiaomi Mi Air suggested by Salmando (who forgot to enter a poll suggestion above)

    • Weird, thought I filled it out. Thanks for adding.

  • I think the Asus s15 which is a 15.6 inch at 1.7kg is a worthy choice.

  • Suggested Lenovo ThinkPad E570

    So I see the trend here and everyone wants smaller slighter devices but I don't subscribe to the tiny laptop doctrine, that's what my phone and tablet(s) are for (cursed ozbargain). It's a great big ugly brick with almost 16" screen. It's great cause you can put two hdd in it + nvme sata + discrete graphics so I recommend the chassis. The deal I got probs isn't available under 1k anymore with the price of ram being what it is but here's a list of all the deals thus far.

    Comes with
    * FULLSIZE KEYBOARD + NUMBERPAD (though not backlit)
    * NvMe ssd thingy (the best one?)
    * 2.5" HDD / SSD
    * DVD (or 2nd 2.5" hdd)
    * up to 950 maybe 1050 gtx graphics
    * up to 32gb DDR4
    + 2 USB 3 , one USB 2
    * hdmi + vga

    So, if you want a laptop that can replace your desktop which is what I wanted, it's a pretty good deal.

    Criteria:

    I have several models based on the the recommended specs of commonly used business software (MYOB AccountRight Live 2017, MS Office, Anti-virus software, image editing software, PDF Editors, etc) in order to be suitable for sole traders, micro-businesses, and small business organisations.

    I have not assessed the battery life of these laptops.

    Basically,

    CPU: 2GHz dual core (i5 2.6 Ghz recommended)
    RAM: 8GB
    Resolution: min 1366x768 (recommended 1920x1080)
    Screen Size: min 13" (anything smaller makes it less efficient due to inefficient desktop real estate).

  • Personally I think in the under $1000 category, the Ryzen Mobile 2500U/2700U containing laptops will be able to shine as long as manufacturers don't mess up.

    Unfortunately, HP often has exclusivity with Harvey Norman, makes the HP Envy X360 15 (contains 2500U) quite unacceptable due to uncompetitive pricing.

    Lenovo messed up 720S due to giving it single-channel RAM.

    Acer not releasing (or has not yet released) the Ryzen containing Swift 3 here.

    BUT! Dell has finally gotten its Ryzen 2500U containing Inspiron 15 5575 here =D
    http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-5575-laptop/pd
    While not exactly that much of a deal at $999, but with a 15% off UNiDays code, it becomes a very good contender.
    Although yes, the current flaws being the sluggish HDD, and likely the 8GB DDR4 Ram is a single stick (so need to add another RAM stick for dual channel).
    But it also has got a M.2 slot according to servicing manuals, so can finely add a M.2 SSD.

    The other to wait for is the upcoming ThinkPad E485, which will have Ryzen CPU. While rumoured for April release, not sure if Australia will get it as well. Hopefully Lenovo won't stuff up its RAM configuration (as per 720S).

    Picked up the thinkpad e485 myself for $750. Awesome for the price. Am very glad I managed to find it for this price, alternatives woulda been plastic HD laptops…

    If you can get it sub $850 I'd say it's absolutely worth it.
