First time using Qantas miles

Hi fellow travelers; I recently accumulated 169,000 Qantas miles which I would like to use for travel to Europe (hopefully via Asia for a few days) in July.

I have never booked with Qantas miles and have very limited experience booking using miles at all (only did it with Delta when I lived in the US a few years ago). Recognising that I don't know what I don't know, I'm wondering if there are any experienced points hackers here who I could consult to help me make the most out of these points for this trip. Happy to shout a meal and some drinks in Sydney for someone who helps me out successful finalise it (or some kinda of equivalent if you are not in Sydney).

Go to Qantas website. Log in. Select flights. Select pay with points. Travel. Enjoy. Return home.

Do you want my PayPal details?

  • You’re better paying for economy and then using points to upgrade

Hardly any chance of that nowadays, especially when the Gold members get first pick.

If you don't mind the extra fee then just call the Qantas ff call centre and they'll sort it all out for you. Otherwise you can go to this link and put in the airports/dates you want to go to: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/book-a-trip/flights/multi-city.… and select use points.

You've probably left it too late to get a good selection of flights or business class so will need to be flexible.

Number 1 tip is to avoid Qantas or British Airways flights as they charge very high taxes/surcharges. Example, fly with Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong then onto Europe.

You can also get a round world ticket for 140,000 points in economy. This should automatically be applied to your booking if you meet the criteria.

If you want to send me a message with list of dates and places you want to go then I'll put together some options.

July being peak EU summer traveller season, you'd want to be booking ASAP if you need to travel on specific dates. A lot of the rewards flights for Europe will have been snapped up long ago.

  • I'll help you out. Just pm me

  • Keep in mind that you can fly to multiple destinations with the points you have:

  • I would look at flying on Cathay to HKG then to an appropriate city they fly to in Europe. Might be able to squeeze in a business class flight or two.

Use the multi-city booking engine on the Qantas website - a bit buggy but at least gives you an idea of the available flights and cost.

  • Look at different routes as they're offering different in the cost of points. I found flying Emirates flights got me better deals than flying Qantas. Also note you'll still be paying for airport fees and taxes which can be substantial.

  • Also, keep in mind that if using the One World Classic Award, then you cannot fly on Emirates as it is not a OneWorld airline. The one world award for 140K pts is the best value as it allows 5 stops in any direction and doesn't even have to be round the world.

  • I read somewhere recently that the codeshare flights (operated by a different airline), but sold by qantas attracted less add on taxes when using points.

  • Thanks for all the insightful answers.
