[Negotiated] Telstra BYO Plan - 15GB Data + Unlim Calls/SMS for $29/Month (Min 12) + $150 Gift Card (Ported Numbers) @ JB Hi-Fi

Moved to Forum: Original Link

This is my First post.

Min-requirement: Need existing service with Telstra.

Note - This offer is only applicable if you're adding another service to your existing account.

JB Hi-Fi $150 Gift Card for Telstra ported customers expires tomorrow, however, you may still be able to get Mx plan at this price without gift card though.
Here's some background about what I did yesterday and today:

Current Status:
I am existing Telstra Customer, running Mx Plan - $39 (Got $200 JB Hi-Fi Gift card during Christmas when I ported from Lyca on $49 Plan, and later converted to Mx plan online)

24/01/2018
1. Spoke to Telstra Online Customer Care and asked, if they have any special offers for adding another service to my existing account. They agreed to offer additional $10 discount on already discounted Mx plan, bringing it down from $39 to $29, and additional 5GB Data. Promised them I'll add the service next day.

25/01/2018
1. Went to JB Hi-Fi, ported my partner's prepaid number to Telstra on $49 Plan, 20GB Data, Unlimited Calls, and received $150 JB Hi-Fi gift card
2. Spoke to Telstra Online Chat support, in reference to yesterday's chat. They agreed to offer as below promised:
a) Switch my plan from $49 (Jb Hi-Fi) to Mx Plan which is already at discounted price of $39 with 10GB Data.
b) Additional $10 discount on $39 Mx Plan
c) 5GB additional data making it a total of 15GB (10GB + 5GB)
3. Added International pack for $10 additional.

Plan Details:
$29 per month, minimum term 12 months
15GB Data
Unlimited Local Calls/SMS
Message Bank
SIM Only Plan

Mod: Deal unpublished as per guidelines for a Negotiated deal. Moved deal post to forums due to high level of interest and so discussion can continue.

  • *Went to JB Hi-Fi, ported my partner's prepaid number to Telstra on $49 Plan, 20GB Data, Unlimited Calls, and received $150 JB Hi-Fi *
Hang on, is it the 15gb or 20gb plan ? either way seems like a great deal! want to find out if the plan allows for international calls?

OP: could you confirm which plan from https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates#byo

    • He ported to this plan at JB https://www.jbhifi.com.au/features/phones/activatenow/
The critical info says international calls not included https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Global/images/2016/08/telstra-form…

I just did this port recently too. This deal is interesting but $49 - $10 extra credit = $39 not $29? Confused here too.

      • thanks for the link.
Based on what you've linked that plan states $10 monthly credit and $150 gift card for porting customers..

so he got $10 porting credit + $10 adding service monthly credit

        • Yeah confusing as but the original Telstra plan is $59 BYO plan… porting with JB gives you $10 credit for the life of plan so that makes it $49 monthly. But he's saying he got another credit of $10 which makes it $39.

However i think somehow he's moving from the $49 BYO plan to the $39 Mx plan after porting with JB Hifi, then the $10 credit making it $29. I'm surprised there's no termination fee for this, unless Telstra sees this as a free "downgrade"? If so I could be on board too. Haha.

        • @chubbygeek: Confirmed, no termination fees. Got first bill estimate.

        • @Battlefield: Can you change your settings to accept PMs

        • @Mal68: sorry wasn’t aware about that option. I’ve made the changes now.

    • $49 is 20GB Plan
Mx is $39 Plan, with 10GB data and bonus 5GB data, makes it 15GB

  • +3

The deal you linked says $49/month, so with $10 discount won't it be $39? How do you get two lots of $10 discount?

    • Yes possible.
Out of my two laptop, one shows $49, and other shows $39.

You can chat with online support, and say that you see it as $39.

  • Damn! I went for this offer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354220 when I signed up over the phone to add a new SIM only plan ($29/mth, 7GB data, unlimited text, $500 calls) which was a pretty good deal. But this is an even better deal.

  • +27

    This is so confusing

    • +5

It's a negotiated deal and he bamboozled Telstra by going to JB to take advantage of the gift card offer.

Telstra decided to still honour their original offer.

    • Sorry about that.
Please refer to attached image in description

      • Your email shows below the link in chat mate

  • +2

I don’t think what you’ve done is possible without incurring early termination charges. When you sign up for the $49plan at JB downgrading to the $39MX plan shouldn’t be posssible without incurring charges.

    • No termination charges incurred in my first bill, on my existing number. Confirmed.

On this new number, I won't incur, hopefully, but will wait for 1st bill, which is roughly 3-5 days away.

Edit - Got first bill estimate of new number, confirmed - No Termination Charges.

  • Is there any way to go from pre-paid Telstra to this?

    • No I don't think so. You won't get Jb Hi-Fi voucher.

      • Is it possible even without the voucher? Pre-Paid $30 only comes with 2.5 GB data… so 15 GB is a huge upgrade.

        • -1

          Check with chat support.

        • Tell us how you go :)

        • @Bubbleshark: they are only offering $39 and can't open the ozbargain link to verify. They asked me to provide the mobile number of OP…

        • @lukethefish: I suppose $39 isn't bad if you can get the JB deal on top

        • I'm currently on $39 per month for 10gb + 5gb bonus data, coming from prepaid.

  • +19

This is a highly negotiated deal

  • shows me the MX plan as $49 (instead of $39) when i login to my account.

    • Yes possible.
Out of my two laptop, one shows $49, and other shows $39.

But you can say that to chat support that you see $39.

  • +3

I find it incredibly difficult to negotiate with these telstra chat reps….I tried to upgrade my existing $49 BYO plan to match competitors and they just told me that Telstra is not a charity and no more data will be applied. Overall a pretty sour conversation…..

    • I always had good experience with them, much much better than Optus.

      • +1

Optus offer this almost everyday publicly though (15GB + Unlim streaming (Spotify, Netflix, iView, etc) $30/mo)

Telstra has a lot more room to do deals

  • Does this count if your other service is ADSL?

    • Yes they do count it.

      • Wow. I wonder if I can get a student discount on top!

        • I asked for same, they said No! :)

        • @Battlefield:

Damn! $29 is a steal either way. I wish they offered unlimited Spotify instead of Apple Music though :(

        • @nurries: It certainly is.

        • @Battlefield: Hey Battlefield, can you PM me

  • tried to get $10 off for adding another service with telstra but all they are offering is 5gb bonus data(this is with online chat).

    • try another rep. I'll update screenshot of my chat.

      • but OP had already a negotiated MX plan. I'm confused as (profanity) as to what he had initially.

I'm guessing he was on the $59 plan which he negotiated down to $49 and that turned into the $39 Mx plan?

Then is getting another discounted MX plan and adding another $10 on top of that discounted plan?
        NFI tbh

  • Please refer to Image attached to description.

  • you email is showing op

    • u beat me

      • sorry mate, updated.

      • +2

        u beat me

        did you enjoy it?

  • hi op , your personal email not hidden in the screenshot, it's in the web link part

    • sorry mate, updated.

  • OP, you have forgotten to blur out your email address which contains your name.

EDIT: Whelp. Beaten by two other people.

    • i beat u ;p

    • sorry mate, updated.

I think this deal would be unattainable for most.. possibly targeted.
step 1 = Mx plan has to show up as $39 instead of $49 so either lie about you seeing it as $39 or it has to actually happen while you are logged into your account
step 2 = negotiate online to get $10 off for adding another service
step 3 = somehow sign up to jb hifi's offer and have the service become the Mx plan?

    • Agree.

Since when do deals on ozbargain require to have an existing mumber on telstra to get this deal.

Unattainable for most. Tragetted and not really a deal

      • I tried to mention - Targeted, for some reason when it got published, I couldn't see it anymore.

  • Well, technically, we can get a $2 sim from vodafone, activate it, then go into JB & get a $150 GC anyways?

    • You certainly can!

    • Wasn't the deal not covered for prepaid? I am confused

      • I do stand corrected. Acc to OP - This offer is only applicable if you're adding another service to your existing account. So I guess have to buy a Telstra sim and add this onto that.

        • +1

I am on a telstra prepaid, I don't see anything in "my offer" or anything related to switching me to postpaid. If you manage, give me a head up

        • @Bubbleshark:
Atm you would be a P2P and not counted as a new service — you could port prepaid to a different provider (as prepaid) and then port back to Telstra onto a postpaid option and count as a new connection and hence try and negotiate from there.

  • -2

    I prefer my 117gb plan for $80

  • Anyone got a link to the JB 15Gb/$39 deal?

Best the rep could do was either 10GB for $39, or 15Gb for $49.

    • I got $39 for 15Gb a few days ago. I didn't get the JBHifi card but the rest of the deal worked for me

  • Have I got the sequence right?

    (1) Own an existing non-telstra service.
    (2) Go to JB hi fi and sign up for $49 plan and get $150 giftcard. Wait for successful porting and service activation.
    (3) Come home, go online to Telstra Chat and ask to convert new service into MX plan and say you see it showing $39.
    (4) Sign up to MX plan and get further $10 discount for having another Telstra service.

    • Too many variables, you need 2 people who want to port to telstra, you need to convince the first telstra operator to change your first contract to mx and make the person believe you see a cheaper price ($39). Then you need the go again to JB and set another contract and get the second operator to change the second contract and make the person believe you see the mx at $39 and hope for some nice gesture to get another 10 bucks discount.

OP you are a lucky bugger!!!

      • I can't get them to agree on the $10 credit to add another service. The max they would offer is 5GB Data.
I am bit worried about letting me change the $49 per month contract to the MX plan as well.

  • +1

You can't have two $10 discounts on the account. At an account level it isn't possible. Also, since when do Telstra staff say, "hehe" and use ":-)" emoji. Don't think you got what you think you did. Downvoting.

    • i also got momentarily excited about this deal but i think i'll just start optus my plan plus and data share with my new 100gb/mth sim that came with my shiny new ipad pro 12.9 :)

    • Yeah I would say this "deal" is unobtainable at best. Shame! Got interested when I saw it.

    • I certainly do think they say things like 'hehe' and ':-)'. They're probably told to use similar typing to the customer.

As for the two $10 discounts, you definately can - I'm one of the fortunate few who have it (on the Family and Friends offer, which apparently isn't compatible with the $10 discount).

With that said, I don't know how the OP got a default price of $39. If I had that, I'd just ask JB to match it and port my daughter's number across.

      • My comment is the outcome of one conversation with a JB employee in Telco and a Telstra sales employee. Both housemates. Both telling me that it simply can’t be done. I’ve asked them both to look into how it /could/ happen but they’re both adamant that it can’t.

The comment on professional dialog is entirely my own conjecture though. It strikes me as unprofessional/too human for Telstra.

        • It is unprofessional, but not surprising. I had a live chat rep the other night who had no idea about the difference between your and you're, and struggled to put together a properly formed sentence throughout the conversation.

With that said, my workplace encourages us to follow the language of our clients, and I imagine many others would too.

  • I have a screenshot of the $39 offer (from when i got it) and the free 5Gb offer if anyone wants it. There doesn't seem to be a way to upload images here so can't post it into the reply.

  • You sir, are a genius! I love this. Well done!

  • +2
    • you are one of the rare ones that sees it as $39. I'm stuck as the loser seeing it as $49.

      • +2

Copy the URL and then use a new incognito browser.. It'll show up..

I am looking through their code now to find out what else they are offering :)

        • Even in incognito I'm not seeing it… What device are you viewing it on? (Tried over non Telstra NBN, and over Telstra 4G)

I seem to have $29 for 7GB (2GB + 5GB Shared) - usually $39… which would probably come down to $19/pm with port in discount. Definately targeted, but works in incognito without my personalised variables.

        • @OzJD:

          Mac and Chrome..

I'm still looking into it.. interesting that they have the 29$ for 7GB

        • @GOFAR: it's listed as this under my second plan…

          Back to school offer
Get your kid 7GB of shareable data

        • +1

          @OzJD:

If you look in inspect element, then in console.. you should see that it loads the deal.. So far i've seen PAS-499 to PAS-635

It took me a few refreshes to get the $39 offer to show up. You need to close incognito and reopen a few times too. I did get it in the end. Also don't sign in off that iP.

        • +1

This actually worked after 3 goes - 10gb for $39. I'm still concerned I'll sign up for this, and not get the extra 5gb…

        • @GOFAR:

please do let me know if you have successfully asked the REP for a $10 discount for adding another service.

you've managed to get over step 1 but now theres still getting the rep to agree to $10 off
and then off to JB hifi
then back to telstra rep to make changes.

        • @OzJD:

I am quite interesting in this deal, but I've spoken to 2 sales reps via Telstra online chat, and they seem to have no idea that this deal exists. They kept saying that this deal is only valid for prepaid customer looking to move onto post-paid which is different to the Back to School deal that you've posted. Do you have any more details on this deal?

        • @wen6309: I have 3 (but 2 at the time of posting) services, and I posted the link above. It only shows under 1 of my services.

  • I tried to get this but had no luck. They won't budge below $39 per month (It shows as $39 per month on my phone)

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/mwnkmaobeenfox4/2018-01-26%2012.15…

  • Talking to them that $10 credit and 5GB bonus data is only as a port in credit, not an additional service credit…so I won't be able to claim two of the JB vouchers from the looks of it.

  • +1

Speaking of discounts.. I have ported to JB during Xmas offer and then walked in to Telstra store to upgrade to S8. Talked with chat reps for 10$ .. success after multiple tries. 59$ became 49$. Got my first bill and it was still 59$, again had a chat with chat rep.. they said your order for 10$ discount is not applied, however your order for discount states 20$ per month discount and he has reapplied discounts..
I have no other words, accepted 20$pm discount.. so literally im on S8 device with 15GB @ 39$ pm.
I dont dare to speak to reps anytime soon.

    • You’re the lucky one

  • -1

This deal is kind of a 3 part deal.

    • Part 1: Get $39 deal with 5GB upgrade.
    • Part 2: Get Telstra to offer you $10 off your service if you add/bundle an extra service.
    • Part 3: Get the JB hifi deal and then claim part 2.

    My progress:

    Completed part 1.
    Tips for doing this.
    • If you're on Telstra, they'll say it's port in only. If you're out of contract they'll want to re-contract you. FYI as a business, if someone is in contract, that is money they can borrow against if they go to a bank. Month to month is not. so this is valuable to them.
    • If you leave the page open, a chat popup will come up. It will look like this: https://www.gofar.co/hubfs/ozbargain-ftw/telstra-cant-stop-o… chat with them and ask about it. They'll give 2 answers. 1- oh you're a current telstra customer? Sorry, you can only get it if you bring another customer to telstra. or 2- you're not a telstra customer? Great, welcome and here is 5GB extra.
      — So what you want to do if you're a current telstra customer is ask.. Okay and if my friend wants to join Telstra, will he need to refer a friend to Telstra to get it? Or does he get the 5GB without having to refer a refriend? They'll say the second.. then you know what to do ;) They'll then offer it to you and ask for your order number after you've ordered to apply it to your account.

    • If you don't get the version that shows $39. Just sign up for the $49, then on the very last slide it will say got a coupon? And enter this one "XMASMX10CREDIT". Here is where it goes https://www.gofar.co/hubfs/ozbargain-ftw/telstra-cant-stop-o…

    • If they ask what deal you're seeing, i'm seeing the $39 one. Also here is the screenshot of what you're seeing ;)
      https://www.gofar.co/hubfs/ozbargain-ftw/telstra-cant-stop-o…
      https://www.gofar.co/hubfs/ozbargain-ftw/telstra-cant-stop-o…

    Yet to start Part 2.
    • I want to wait a bit before I approach another sales rep to ask about it.
    Yet to start part 3.
    • +2

JB Hi-Fi should have been Part 1, everything else looks good.
Now if you'd go to JB Hi-Fi, they won't offer you $150 voucher, as that's for ported numbers only. If you've executed Part 1, you're already a Telstra customer now, and it won't be considered as Porting.

And anyway, JB HiFi voucher deal ended today.

  • You've got it the wrong way around.

Step 1. Go to JB and sign up for $59+ plan (with $10 port in discount). Get $150 gift card (offer expires 26/1, but it'll probably be back soon).

Step 2. Within 24 hours of activation, ask Telstra to downgrade you to the $39 plan, and keep your $10/month porting discount. Must be within 24 hours to exit without a termination fee.

IMHO, this may be considered fraudulent, and Telstra may choose to apply the early termination fee at their discretion (as per the contract wording)

FWIW: If you skip the gift card, you can just port in to Telstra and get the $10pm discount, If you have multiple services, you'll also get the 5GB bonus data.

    • You don't get to keep the port in discount if you change the plan

      • If you change it very soon after porting, most staff will let you keep it in my experience.
