Should I use Comprehensive cover or pay directly to fix the damage (please see the post for image)?

Mistakenly caused this damage to my car when parking at station's car park.

I have "Comprehensive - Drive Less Pay Less " cover with Woolworths Insurance with excess of $1000.

Looking at the damage, I am wondering should I use Comprehensive cover or pay directly (how much it would be any guess?) to fix it?

  • Id pay direct. Be about $1200. Most independent repairers hate the niggling insurance claims.

Nice job of parking - was it another car you hit?

Regardless, my guess is about $2.000-$2.500 repair job. Panel shops have lost the art of "panel beating", rather they will just replace/spray the panels.
Allowing $1.500 for the first panel and (say) $500-$1.000 for the additional panel it will be a costly exercise.

But why don't you get off your ass and get a proper quote from a panel shop?

    Can’t help with the guesses.
Just take it to a panel place and get a quote.
If it’s less than $1400 (for a proper, quality fix job), pay for it yourself, the extra $400 takes into account for your increased premiums in the next coming years.
If it’s more than $1400, claim it.
If it is exactly $1400, stand in an open area, face 38 degree North West, make sure the sky is clear and wait until 7 minutes past noon, then flip a coin.

So is heads claim through insurance or pay out of pocket. I'm confused.

Not trying to be a knob, but why is your excess so high? Ours is $400 with RAA. Did you go for cheaper premium but higher excess? Just wondering. Sorry about your car, but these things happen.

I'd at least try and get some quotes so you at least know where you stand before you go ahead with anything.

Probably under 25. My excess is over $1000 because I'm under :/

I think that Ocker above has hit the nail on the head by writing 'But why don't you get off your ass and get a proper quote from a panel shop?'

  • Bang it out, buy some filler and matching paint.

  • about 2000-2500
bar needs strip, repair and paint
guard needs strip, replace with new, paint

just balance it out on the other side, looks the good, saves the dollar.

  • I would suggest you go into a few places to get a quote on how much it would cost then decide whether to pay yourself or claim.

  • Car repairers will give you a cheaper price if you are paying and they are not dealing with the Insurance Company. However you have more protections/warranty power if you go through your Insurance Company.

  • I may be wrong but if you are considering not getting your insurance company to repair the damage to save on potential increase in premiums or to keep a clean record of accidents you may come unstuck in future claims if the company finds out this accident. Others may have better information but I have an inkling that there is a risk of not reporting any damage/accidents to your insurance company.

  • It should just buff out.

How old is your car? Can you pick up new panels from the wrecker and just chuck em on?

Also higher premiums are false economy, if you only had 400 excess you'd be jumping on your insurance atm. Did you save $600 yet?

  • Have you thought about scratchbusters.
You can email the pic get a free quote & they come to you.

  • Unfortunately you hit the bumper. They are super expensive. They have to take off the bumper to fix, leave it there for 24 hours to dry before putting it back on etc etc. My similar prang cost about $1500 :( I always wondered if you have an Age Excess if you can wait until older to claim? Does anyone know?

  • Those factory wheel trims alone are $170 each. I know i've tried to replace one. $2-3 grand easy, if you use insurance.

  • Get some quotes, doubt it would be more than $1000 to fix. Or, have fun and diy it!

  • Could be worth sending some photos to one of those mobile scratch/dent/paint repairers for an estimate if they can fix it. We had a nasty scratch with minor denting in about the same spot on our car & the guy quoted from the photos. Think it was about $150 or thereabouts (couple of years ago now). Professional looking job of colourmatching to the rest of the paintwork (silver car).
