Recommend me a laser printer

Hi all, I'm in need of some advice. I'm looking to make the jump to my first laser printer after too many dodgy inkjets.

Here's what I'm looking for:
- mono only
- Auto duplex printing
- Auto feed scanner
- generic toner available
- network nice but not essential

I've seen a few models that cover this in the $150-$250 price range but I have no idea what brands I should look for or avoid on this area.

Any thoughts?

  • Cheap printers generally use expensive consumables. Don’t shop on price alone.

Did you want duplex scanning too?

I have 2 HP MFC426dn multifunctions and they’ve been good. They do duplex scanning and printing but are a bit more than your budget.

  • We have had a Fuji Xerox (LED) mono combo M205B for many years … it was $cheap$ and we use cheap generic refills via ebay.
Glad to not have those inkjet headaches any more.
Prob does not have all the specs you are looking for but it sure is reliable and dirt cheap to run.

  • +1

I've never had any problems with Brother laser printers.

    • Mine became dodgy (prints slow / gets stuck / doesn't print full ink) after a solid 8 years (4 years of uni constantly printing 50 page documents/lecture slides)

Hmmm… Not sure if that's a testimonial or a complaint.

        • +1

Eight years of solid service certainly sounds like a testimonial to me.

        • @pjetson: I loved it, but it can't last forever haha

      • That actually sounds really impressive to me, my inkjets have never laster more than 18 months.

I'm looking at this one at the moment: Brother MFC-L2713DW, retail $229 (I'm sure I can find somewhere to get them to pricematch).

Seems to have everything I need, even auto duplex scanning which is a plus.

What I can't find for it, is generic toner.

        • Yeah! Brother printer was great. Abused the heck out of it and in the end gave up (I thought it was bulletproof).

        • What I can't find for it, is generic toner.

I looked too, and couldn't find anything. I wonder why?

  • I think I'm going to go with the Fuji Xerox m265z. Auto duplex printing and scanning with Auto doc feed, ethernet and wifi, cloud printing services and most importantly generic toner available!
