  • What's the transfer ratio?
ie 1 Flybuys point to 1 Velocity?

    • -4

      Same as woolworths and qantas.

      1000 points = 870 ff points

      • +6

        2000 flybuys points = 870 velocity points

        • So 1 FB = 0.44 Velocity

        • @T-man: Sure, but you can only transfer in 2000 point lots

  • +3

Min 2000 flybuys points to 870 velocity. Bonus 131. Total 2000 fb = 1001 velocity

  • The page to transfer Flybuys to Velocity says the 15% bonus is available from 1st Feb - 22nd Feb

  • Sweet I can transfer the 40000 fly buys points I have

  • -1

Got the same offer but transferring my amex rewards to velocity (15% bonus). Might just be targeted.

    • I also got this offer from Amex.

    • I typically never convert membership rewards points to anything else, as these are double the value when compared to FBs.

  • Hehe I'm not able to link accounts cause I lied about my birthday on them and they don't match… Got bugger all FlyBuys anyway.

    • Why do you need to lie about birthday?

      • +3

Why do they need to know it?

        • Well if your intention is to redeem points for travel, of course dob needs to match your passport

        • -1

          @ausvicee: Why?

    • Give them a call to update your dob.

  • +5

correct me if I'm wrong but in term of dollar value, don't you actual lose out more if you transfer your point?

    2000 flybuys = $10
    1800 velocity = $10

2000 flybuys = 870 velocity or 1001 velocity (with this bonus).

    so basically you lose $5-6?

    • +1

This deal only benefits if you want to use velocity points for flight upgrades or business class. For giftcard redemption FlyBuys on it own has better value

    • +2

Depending on how you earn and use your flybuys. Some people wants to save all year round to get supermarket/gift vouchers for christmas. Yes, if you would like redeem for
gift cards or merchandise its better not to transfer to Velocity.

I'd rather use mine on award flight tickets

    • I asked this same question on the woolies to qantas redemption actually. I think again it suits only if you need the ff point program accumulated for flights… for buying gift cards or other redemptions not converting from flybuys or anything is still the best

    • How do you work out it is worth $10?

7,800 gets you bne - syd for $24 in tax. That is $156-$226 in value depending what you are booking (most flights are $180-$250 range each way, inc tax), so 50 points = $1, 1k points = $20 min

never redeem on international travel, it is by far the worst dollar value.

      • +1

Just another clown who wastes points on Gift Cards.

    • Correct, so I stopped using Flybuys with Velocity and use them for Coles or 1st Choice discounts.

    • $10 Flybuys dollar is not actually worth $10.

      For me I value Velocity at $0.05 / 1 to redeem a business class flight, so 870 * 0.05 =$43.50

It depends on you how to use your points but I’ve never used for the gift cards redemption.

      • $10 flybuys dollar is $9.5?

  • +1

Thanks OP - Just Transferred the max 138k

    • Geez you must have 1 million+ points on you

      • Nah , I had about 600k flybuys point 2 years ago. Need another 3 years transfer to velocity.

        • jeezus - how? do you shop that much or do you just take to bonus point offers like a hawk?

        • +1

@SaberX: there was promo Coles MC giftcard 1 card earns 2000fb. I bought hundreds of it.

        • @bbqwer:

the current promo?? becuase that's limited to 1000 points?

they had two recent ones: an eftpos: 2000 points and another visa one i think, also 2000 points. But they were always limited to 1 weren't they?

So I only got one of each. or could you buy multiples back then during that promo?

jeez you also must have had thousands lying around to leave on your coles MC gift carsd too though?

        • +1

@SaberX: promo was back 2-3 years ago, there was no limit purchases.

        • @bbqwer:

Wow good onyou then. Only issue is having all those cards to use with thousands on but if you do alot of groceries and other shopping at least it's like a credit card.

        • @SaberX:

Nah you use those giftcards to pay bills and therefore they get eaten up pretty quickly. This was the best promo of all time. A lot of people cashed in big hence Coles has been really stingy with points after that.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/328310

        • Wait is it only 138k transfer per year?

        • @bbqwer: The elusive pro OzBargainer has been spotted in the wild.

  • are people rating QF = VF pts?
I value QF pts higher personally, as I feel like its a little harder to earn than VF

2000 fly buys = 1001 VF means that you are "paying" 1 cent per pt.
Is 1 VF worth 1c on ozb?

    • +2

I rate on the value of redemptions or where I am looking to travel.

      • Generally Velocity flight redemption is better value for USA and Asia (through Singapore Airlines) and QFF is better for Europe.
      • Generally QFF has a wider variety of flights available.
      • Taxes are usually higher for QFF.

In terms of gift card redemptions, better off keeping the Flybuys points. QFF and Velocity are both worse, but similar value to each other.

      • Definitely true. Though worth noting Velocity redemptions for Virgin between Australia and the US in premium cabins are astonishingly difficult unless you're willing/able to risk a last minute booking a few days before travel.
I've partly given up on both programs for my main earning method (credit card), using the Amex explorer to get points that I could transfer into Starwood, Singapore, Virgin, Etihad and Cathay Asia Miles depending on what I want. So much more flexibility that way, and Asia Miles redemptions to Europe (on any Oneworld carrier) are great value compared to Qantas.

That said, Flybuys has proven to be a decent little earner for Velocity and the status points don't hurt either.

    • +1

I would have thought a better measure of value would be how easy they are to spend.

QFF is much worse there, assuming you want to use them for flying.

Also, hard to earn ? Every time I turn around there's another credit card with a 50-100k QFF signon bonus. Not so much for Velocity.

    • really if you rate the dollar vallue of the fly buys versus the 1 c per VF point i think like you said it's "standard" . it's just more of when you accumulate all these extra Velocity points you can use it for say a business class ticket half way across the world that you would have been short on, so jsut some 'extra' consideraitons to think of. for anyone using for plain dollar value and gift cards leaving it in the native flybuys or woolies rewards is always going ot be better $ value.

  • Well Qantas also requires a lot more points to travel internationally on rewards flights. Virgin points can also be interchanged for Singapore Airlines points at a rate of 1.35 to 1. For example, Perth to Singapore Return on Biz is 100k points for Qantas. Whereas Singapore airlines is 65k points. So taking into account the ratio, you need less than 90k points from Virgin to do the same leg in Biz. So comes down to what you value, how hard it is to get the points or how much further the points can go to a reward?

    • Is it hard to get say a business class seat all on points if say you were heading to europe on qantas??provided you have the points?

      • Yes. Nearly impossible unless you're a Gold or Platinum FF and booking a year in advance. Or incredibly lucky.

        • Really??drats so even id you book more than a yr in advance??can you first come first served if entry level qantas? Or do you have to wait for gold or platinum??

So velocity and asia miles etc. Are alot easier to use points for completely free seats??

        • @SaberX:

Can't book more than about 300 (or so, can't remember the exact number) days in advance. QFF Platinum (and maybe Gold) can book about 340 days out.

If seats are available, it's first, in best dressed. However, Platinums can ring up and ask for more rewards seats to be released.

In my experience, Velocity points are easier to use to book flights as a pleb Red, than QFF points are to book flights as a QF Platinum. Note, however, that points flights to the US or Europe are always extremely difficult to find, even for high-status frequent flyers. The points I've used for flights have all been domestic flights, or only international to New Zealand.

    • Actually speaking of paetner airlines is the only feasible way to get amex MR points into airlines is through virgin first? Ive been stockpiling my amex card as i wasnt sure if you could or would be better off transferring to another airline in asia such as asia miles or would you regardless have to transfer to velocity first anyway??

In which case rather than hold out on stockpiling amex MR points i might as well use the bonus tf along with this flybuys one?

      • You're better off transferring to the partner airline direct from Amex MR…. ie singapore airlines is 1 MR point to 0.75 KF mile. Velocity is the same rate. So if u did velocity first then Krisflyer u lose out cuz of the 1.35 velocity to 1 KF. Even with the 15% bonus u still lose out compared to directly transferring to KF

        • but the AMEX MR is 1 for 1 i believe? SO 1 MR = 1 Velocity point which is what I thought?? so then the rate would be 1.35 to 1 KF after that??

Versus 1 MR to 0.75 KFmile direct? or am i missing something?

        • @SaberX: Nope Velocity and Krisflyer exchange at the same rate with Amex Gateway MR unless you are talking about AMEX MR ascent… they are 2 different award programs…. the Amex explorer card uses gateway.

        • @cheapjunkie:

i believe it would be the MR ascent program then right - i Have the platinum edge card?

IN which case the transfer is 1 to 1 from MR ascent to velocity? and i assume (but don't know/haven't checked) that you can tf MR 1:1 for krisflyer too?

However, what your saying still is the rate of transfer from VElocity to KF is not 1:1 so the first time you redeem your amex MR points shoudl be to the (preferably) reward program you actually want to have in the end? I.e. go straight to KF rather than going from amex MR to Velocity, then deciding you want to switch to KF?

        • @SaberX:

Yeap platinum edge is Ascent… and you are correct you are much better off transferring directly to the airline rewards program you wanna use for reward flights because you lose out 1.35 to 1 if u did Velocity first then KF

        • @cheapjunkie:

thanks. what's the best recommended strategy if i want to clsoe the amex and stash my points somewhere? I have no idea what FF program i'm going to need to use.. so far im stockpiling and signing up for Qantas FF point credit cards for the honeymoon in coming yrs but have heard some discouraging things here on ozb recently that the average pleb will hardly ever get a business class/redemption seat with points as it goes to platinum etc. members and are all sold out always… so i thought of switching tact - supposedly virgins easier?

otherwise can you use virgin's velocity poitns and book on to a partner carrier as opposed to transferring to that partner carrier's FF program? Or would you still receive an uneconomic rate of redemption using that strategy?

        • @SaberX:

Personally I wouldnt use Velocity points to book partner airlines cuz the rates are terrible. Well if you think the honey moon is gonna be outside of Australia, KF would be good cuz of rates. i mainly only fly Singapore airlines… however note that the points only last for 3 years… another option may be emirates… but for international i find Singapore Airlines the best. Also how many points do u want to transfer? If it isnt too much it maybe best to store in Velocity first as there isnt an expiry as long you earn something every 18 mths

  • Bugger. Transferred 12,000 points the other day after giving up waiting for a 15% offer.

    • The bonus offers usually come around every May and November.

      • I transferred 140k flybuys 2 weeks ago coz I didn't want to wait until May

        • How could you transfer 140k points? The max is 138K per year

        • @T-man:
          Different cards

      • Is 15% the max offered on bonus transfers??is it worth waiting if they do 20% or higher or is 15% the max ever done?

  • is it targeted? when i click the link i just get taken to the velocity home page. would love to transfer some flybuys if the deal is actually active.

  • +1

AMEX is doing the bonus too: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358736

  • There is a limit isn't there on the transfer per year? does anyone rememebr what it is?

    • 138K FB points

      • thanks mate

  • does anyone know if the tf of flybuys points to velocity qualifies as 'eligible' earning to keep your velocity pooinst from expiring. i think you need to earn points or redeem once every 24 months?

I guess you could just get the milk bottle from bp petrol station and swipe , but keen to know if transferring in points from partners also counts.

    • Yes it does

    • Don't think velocity rewards points ever expire… QFF used but they no longer do now… you lose the status in QFF but not the points themselves.

  • Can anyone give me some idea on how many velocity points I would need to upgrade a flight to business class (say one way) from Sydney to UK.

I have 200,000 fb points and am trying to figure out how velocity works
