Electricity Costs - Got an Auction Going between AGL and Origin

Live in NSW (Sydney)
Pay about $800pq (4br house, wife and kids home, pool)
Time of Use Meter.

AGL and Origin seem most competitive. Similar rates, so it gets back to the discount

Was on AGL 25% disc.
Switched to Origin 26% discount + $50 signup bonus
AGL countered with 28% discount
Then Origin 32% discount

Effective rates after discount (excluding GST) as follows:
peak $0.360 per kWh
offpeak $0.098 per kWh
shoulder $0.162 per kWh
supply $0.969 per day

Just wanted to put this out there for the dedicated Ozbargainers out there.

At $800pq you should consider a solar system if that's an option for you? Definately get the payback

        • Already have a 1.5kW one (came with the house). The $800 is net of the solar generation.

Looked at replacing it with a 5kW one but wasn’t really convinced (for us). Mainly because our usage not very consistent when the sun is shining. Also don’t have a very large roof facing north. Definitely an option but payback period about 6-7 years so not especially motivated.

      • how did you Get an Auction Going between AGL and Origin?

        • Switched companies.
They save their best offers to the actively disloyal.
Ringing up saying I’ve been with you for x years, thinking of moving, what’s your best offer, will only get you so far.
What you have to do is accept that offer and then find one equal or better and switch to it.
Preferably one of the big ones AGL, Origin or Energy Australia.

        • @MikeHunt:

But once you accepted the offer, dont you only have a few days cooling offer period to find a better deal

        • @Triton: you can switch during the cooling off period or shortly after (provided no exit fees - most don’t)

  • any Steak knives? lol

  • Has elec gone up to 36c p/kw now?!

    • Time of use (TOU) metering has a much higher peak rate than non TOU metering.

      • In this case its not that much, never seen it this low before.

        Its around 5-6c higher.

        Often it something like this
        peak 30-50% higher,
        shoulder 10% higher
        off peak 30-50% lower.

What shown by the op is what I epxect it should be like … I work with data

  • Thanks for the post.
Will call them again in the am.

Origin all the way, AGL biggest scammers in the business

    • but but but it gas! plus a whole lot more!

    • Funny others say it's the other way round. The only real way is NEVER to be loyal to either or others. Like car Insurance/banks

      • Just at the two companies as a financial institution and you will realise that agl are scammers. Origin employs twice the amount of people in comparison to agl, yet only has 50% of the revenue of agl. AGL has its tech support in India, origin has it in Australia etc. Essentially i look at their financial position, ethical inner workings and their profit margins within Australia to determine their type of business they do.

        • Now that may well be, obviously you have inside knowledge or have done extensive research., so I cant even try to dispute something I hav no knowledge of.

However you do confuse things with the term scammer. The issues you raise and again no dispute on that etc, just dont fit the term scammer.

          Definition - Scammer

a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; swindle. verb (used with object), scammed, scamming. 2. to cheat or defraud with a scam.

They might have a ruthless pursuit of profit etc but its not fraudulent etc

Been thru this, eneded up with 33% with AGL and Flybuys sign up bonus. Nice to see this is still going, due in April for another sign up round.

  • wow those time of use rates actually look 'proper'

can you send me a link to the price document that states this.

Everytime I've see time of use, its disgustingly bad. I've always told people to avoid it like the plague
