If You Post on eBay Does This Affect Gumtree Listings?

I have a product that I sell in both gumtree and ebay with unlimited stock. I use the same details on gumtree and ebay, including PayPal details, and I know they are essentially the same company.

Since achieving my top rated seller badge on eBay I’m getting almost no sales on gumtree - even when paying for advertising. I’m wondering if this is coincidence, or if it is rigged. The cost for me to sell on eBay is higher with the 10% ‘final value fees, so it’s in eBays favour for me to sell there. Has any one else experienced this?

I’m wondering whether I should take down all my Gumtree ads, create a new gumtree ID separate to eBay and try again. Or I guess it could just be natural ebb and flow but curious to hear feedback.

Thanks!

I don't see why there would be a difference from an eBay Gumtree point of view? My guess though is that eBay is seen as a lot more safer, so if I saw the same item for sale on both sites for the same price I'd definitely be buying it from eBay instead of Gumtree for sure, which may be why you're seeing the drop? This is the case for me for mailed items especially as tuzii says gumtree is more pick up, (for me I also see it as less trustful even if its probably the same).

Can agree with this. I only use Gumtree for second hand crap that I can physically go and pick up. Gumtree is a more locally searched market place, where as eBay is more national/global.

If I saw the same item on Gumtree and eBay, I wouldn’t definitely go through eBay.

It may just be the type of thing you are selling lends itself to being sold through eBay and not the type of thing that people go looking for on a site with the reputation of Gumtree…

Ummm if you sell via ebay, they take 10% of the sale. If you sell via gumtree, they get 0% of the sale.

There is a MASSIVE difference from the ebay point of view. Gumtree is 100% owned by ebay. So if they had the choice to push which product is sold, they would like you to buy via ebay.

Gumtree has been 'inserting' ebay products for sale in results for a long time now.

if you sell via ebay, they take 10% of the sale.

Closer to 15% once you take into account PayPal fees.

If you sell via gumtree, they get 0% of the sale.

That's QuickSales main claim to fame as well, that's worked well for them.

Gumtree and eBay have different markets. Aside from killing a potential competitor, Gumtree was a bit pointless as an eBay asset. Handy for warding off Facebook marketplace these days I guess.

        • Closer to 15% once you take into account PayPal fees.

Yeah but ebay no longer owns them, so ebay doesn't see the paypal fees, only the 10% + GST aka 11%.

Gumtree was a bit pointless as an eBay asset.

At the time it was a major up and coming competitor, so they brought them up and kept them 'average' at best, just to keep those sales from eating into ebay cash cow.

I do agree, Facebook is now a big threat to ebay, and facebook are happy to keep it 'free' as it locks in the users!

        • @JimmyF:

so ebay doesn't see the paypal fees

I was thinking more from buyer/seller point of view, they certainly see the 15%.

Quicksales was the real competitor, GumTree was always a local classified / Trading Post thing. Nothing wrong with eBay trying to cover all the bases I suppose.

In theory lower prices attract more buyers (hello OzBargain!) so you could list on multiple platforms, eg $100 on eBay and $85 on Gumtree, but it doesn't work out. (eBay of course take a dim view to sellers using eBay as an advertising platform.)

You get $85 either way, but do you really want to deal with the GumTree idiots what want you to knock $50 off the price?

Of course sellers are idiots too, you can list on Quicksales at a lower price, but sellers there prefer to shoot themselves in the foot by getting greedy and setting the exact same price.

Facebook markets is only Gumtree at the moment, but wouldn't be hard for them to start stepping onto eBay's turf.

  • Recently I have been advertising random items on both. My asking price on Gumtree is always less and negotiable, taking into consideration the item doesn't need postage and is fee free. A buyer can get a better deal, but as mentioned there is more security in ebay purchases. I have noticed ebay have been offering me more no fee promotions etc. Not sure if I should read anything into that, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are analysing ads to see if they are from the same seller and offering incentives. It would be easy for a buyer to identify the same item from my pictures/wording. I'd give creating a new user id on Gumtree a go, use different pictures, contact details and see if there is any change.

Costs you nothing, so why not give it a go.

I would also look at using different wording/pictures as well, and maybe take a couple of dollars off the price to swing buyers who see both ads.

  • It just seems strange that I was selling a lot of product on both sites, then all of a sudden gumtree sales dried up conpletely even with ads. I’ll try reposting new ads and make a new ID and let you know if it works!
