  • I can't remember when was the last time I use my blue ray player. All the contents I watch is all through internet for a few years now.

    • +18

If you are comparing this to streaming then it's not for you.
If your eyes can't tell the difference between streaming and local 4K UHD blu-ray playback then again it's not for you.

      • +1

I can tell the difference for sure but I'm opted for the convenience over quality at the moment.

        • +9

Perhaps if you're one of the lucky few with the (sub-par) NBN. Personally, I'm stuck on a 1Mbps connection for now so I predominantly rely on physical media.

        • @kpm: yep, I can understand. I used to buy a lot of DVDs when the
          Internet was slow.

      • +1

Exactly, there's night and day difference between regular bluray quality and streaming quality, let alone 4K Ultra HD. And it's not just the image quality either - the sound I think makes more of a difference when it comes to getting that cinema experience. Atmos or even DTSHD go along way to improving the experience.

        • Agree. Streaming is better is like saying I play clash of clans so I'm a "gamer".

Different purpose I guess especially lying down in bed or going out then streaming is your best bet but I never stream on my living room with my 65" 4k surround ht system.

        • @lagur:

I think it comes down to ignorance as well. Once you've become accustomed to watching high quality content with a good picture + sound - then it's hard to go back.

I have friends who seem quite happy with watching crappy 2gb 1080p movie rips on their 24" PC monitor. And here I am wanting to avoid even 1080p blurays now that ive gotten used to 4k HDR :P

    • Say that to those who buy that odd BDP player brand that goes for 800 dollars

      • OPPO?

        • Yep that's the one. I thought they only made phones at the time

      • I take offence to that!

I paid $749.00 for my oppo 203 (I hope the wife dosen't read this thread )

      • +1

Oppo were good because you can get modchips for them to make them region free and I had a $300 one chipped so I could import from Amazon US/Germany. Not worth it anymore with UHD being region free the Xbox One S is the best value for money, it's quite fast as a UHD player and for the Australian BDs I have the upscaling is really good on it.

        • I just don't see how spending 800 on a bdr player is a good idea unless you have some home theatre with 150 inches and want the best experience through it

    • +4

4K blurays are very high bitrate. Even when further compressed it’d be a bit too much for most people to stream over the net. But you’re right, 4k streaming is pretty good and most people won’t care about the difference. I reckon it’s worth it though, 4k blurays look like they are going to be fairly cheap.

      • Yep, and once 5G is available , more people will jump shift to streaming. But the way our NBN goes, I hope it will become available in the next 10 years.

      • 4K streaming bitrate is too low on most providers and opting for a 1080 stream will result in higher quality.

    • Me too. Everyone's entitled to their opinions and ideas. Whats problem neggie b!tch !!

  • Multi Region: No

    • +1

What region do you source your 4k blu-rays from?

      • +4

4K Blu Rays are region free. Only applies to actual Blu Ray or DVD's.

A lot of 4K Blu Rays have only been released in USA so handy to know.

        • +1

          you didn't get my sarcasm

        • Tell me about it!

I had to buy the following from amazon US

          The fifth element
          Hacksaw ridge
          Leon the professional
          Red
          Kickass
          Starship troopers

    • Is there any stock UHD player that extends region-free to standard blurays/dvds as well? (That isn't modified by a special electronics store.)

I'd buy one if there was.

      • I heard Panasonic UHD players support with a modded firmware that their own official support centre can load it for you.

      • There are OPPO units where the "mod chip" is something you just plug into a port on the board to make it region free

  • +1

    Good night lyl

  • -1

Yeah I'm selling all my dvd and blu ray. Streaming where its at!

  • Hi guys. Can someone please tell me if they know if this player has a dialogue enhancer?

    • +2

      karaoke style or gangnam style?

  • +3

If you want to hear true, undiluted bollocks being discussed, listen to a conversation between 2 audiophiles or videophiles

    • +5

The blacks are blacker on blu Ray.

      • Blacker blacks are the new black

  • +1

Can you hire 4k blu rays yet?

    • +8

Are there any video stores left?

    • Some do on gumtree.

  • Specs says this can burn CD’s. Not DVD or Blu-ray burning though. Interesting.

  • +1

Still waiting for the Xiaomi 4K player

  • I have the Samsung M8500 4K BR player can't fault it, streams Netflix and youtube no probs.

  • -1

No atmos support on this one though.

    • +4
      • thanks mate. I thought i checked it yesterday on amazon and users said no atmos. i think still misses dolby vision though heh :(

        • you expect DV support in $150 UHD player?

        • @ozdesi: when a 100bucks android box does it, why the heck not?

        • @F1Maniac: $100 Android box can't even come close to what this UHD player will deliver in terms of PQ.

These two are very different devices - one used for streaming in compressed bit-rate format and other meant for local disc playback in full glory.

Pricing and overall user experience for UHD players is very different compared to hacky droid boxes

        • @ozdesi: you clearly have no experience with android boxes with regards to PQ. they play files more than 100Mbit 4k streams with no issues whatsoever and look absolutely stunning, i am not talking about your average netflix source here, try any of the LG OLED demos on the S905x android boxes.

granted they cant play UHD BR, but that wasnt really your point above w.r.t. PQ.

        • @F1Maniac: This is no ego battle, you win if you think PQ of droid box will be 1:1 lossless compared to UHD BR over HDMI at 100Mbps.

  • +1

Can this one play X265 files?

  • I was waiting for the PS4 to have a 4k player, but I guess this will do, bought! (xbox isn't for me)

    • Good buy. I may say xb1s is really good especially of it's multiple purposes aside from 4k player capable but this dedicated player price is a steal. They used to be almost as expensive as xb1s though.

      • If the Xb1 was cheaper I would have just bought that anyways (below $200) but not worth it otherwise.

        • Naah I think price aren't that bad right now. Well it wasn't when the time XB1+kinect is at same price as PS4.

        • @lagur:

XB1 S is the minimum for the 4k blu ray though, that's like $279

        • @jubbing:

Expensive yes if you won't be using xb1s main features.

Usually you can get xb1s sale price at 239$ or less this time around.

  • All of this aside, does anyone know if this one has the same problem as several predecessor models, such as the BDH-6500, regarding the touch sensor for the controls on the unit going wonky and 8-12 months into one's use of it, starting to repeatedly spontaneously reboot?

(Yes, it's specifically the touch sensor failing. When the touch sensor is disconnected, meaning one has to rely on one's remote to control the player, the spontaneous reboots disappear. Scattered others have reported that if they smooth out air bubbles that they've observed between the touch sensor and the case of the unit, that also tends to fix it, for a while at least.)

I'm tired of not being able to open and close my unit's tray without the remote, and want to replace it with another inexpensive UHD player, but don't want another that's going to fail in a year.
