Should I Pay for Volkswagen Compulsory Car Service

I bought a new VW Golf from the dealer last year and since last week the car starts to remind me to do the annual oil and inspect.

I did some research on VW service schedule, apparently I need to use VW's servicing which is around $500 otherwise I won't have the VW LongLife mobility guarantee.

This so called VW LongLife mobility guarantee means:

You will receive appropriate support if your car has a breakdown or an accident as a result of a technical defect and needs to be towed. The LongLife mobility guarantee grants you proaction and mobility.

I would imagine a comprehensive insurance and RACQ roadside assist will take care of all that and I already have comprehensive insurance.

Has anyone bought a new VW and is forced to go with the dealer's capped service which costs you $500?

A local private mechanic will only charge me $120 but that means I will lose this useless LongLife mobility guarantee?

Has anyone done this before?

Lol buy racx top level, you will still be way Infront.

  • Check to see if capped priced servicing was included?

I got my golf serviced for around $320 but that was the 30k service

What is a LongLife Mobility guarantee?

I have a Honda and local mechanic says anyone can service your vehicle and by law does not affect warranty

    • Of course your mechanic would say that. He wants your business. Did you check elsewhere that it is true? You might have voided warranty.

(He is right though, any licenced mechanic can service for you and maintain the warranty)

      • Is that really true?

I have a Subaru and its asking for servicing every 6 months to maintain warranty which is bullshit compared to other car brands!

I have a Soobie and the mechanic who services my car told me take it them at least annually for a software update. I also need to get it serviced annually to get the free map updates. I usually alternate between Subaru and my mechanic in terms of servicing to get the best value.

  • $500 who told you that?
    its capped price

Mention it's a logbook service, that price will double..

The dealers marketing department work really hard to make you THINK you need to go back to them when you are probably better off elsewhere where the mechanics are more than just apprentices.

  • $500???

Have you called the dealer for a price?

or you know just don't buy european cars and never have to pay $500 to replace a light bulb.

      • I have a BA Falcon and the shifty pr*cks @ the Ford Dealership wanted to charge me $50 to change a rear brake-light bulb when it was (in warranty) at service.
Pop the boot open and unscrew the two screws to remove the rear tail-light assembly & Bob's your uncle!
I told them that they must make a killing with customers that have no idea.

    Define: Protection? Protection from what?
Define: Mobility? Is that just one tow straight to the dealer/mechanics?

Ask the dealer for the fine print and you will release it is very very basic protection IMO.

    RACx would be better.
You can ask your insurance if they have roadside assist.

Don't get thrashed too much with servicing charges. That's where they make their money to offset a puny mobility service

Edit: It is only worth to have if you have intentions of selling the car soon. It looks good for the new prospective owner.

    Cheers

  • Never heard of it costing $500 for capped servicing…

I think you've miss understood the person on the phone.

  • I bought a 2nd hand VW still in warranty. Never serviced it at VW and had no problems using the free VW roadside assist.

  • Capped price servicing on a Golf definitely shouldn’t cost that much (although maybe an GTI / R model is more expensive?), however my dealer has definitely miss quoted prices to me on more than one occasion for various things so I’m not surprised.
