Best Bang for Your Buck Travel Destinations

Hi Ozbargainers.

I'm Interested in hearing about travel experiences to destinations that offer exceptional value for money. In my experience places vary enormously in price even within the same country.

    Best Bang for Your Buck

What type of bang are you referring to?

    • +1

I mean which country can you have the most fun for the price you pay?

      • +1

I was just kidding with that question. But the answer, no matter what type of bang for buck you're referring to, is going to be the same anyway because it's all relative to the cost of living! :)

    Vietnam, no contest.

I second this. Don't even have to pay for heating….it comes included. Cooling on the other hand….

Among south east asian countries it must be Thailand and or Vietnam. With Thailand having the advantage of better infrastructure.

    • I've been to Bangkok. Thought it was quite expensive. Heard Chiang Mi is cheaper.

      • Bangkok. Taxi to/from airport $10 - 12.
Without much effort you can get reasonably priced 3 star hotels $65 per night EG Citadines Sukhumvit soi 8. Or, if you are willing to stay a few subway stops from Sukhumvit, $30 per night at Blissotel Rama 9.
Food is as expensive, or as cheap as you want.
Hua Hin $30 per night eg.The Celtic Inn, Bann Lom Le Hotel. Minivan to/from HuaHin $7.
Chiang Mai also easy to get decent hotels at $30-35. See tripadvisor.

Thailand has very good bang for your buck. Good rates.
Can't beat Vietnamese women though ;)

I find the big Malaysia cities such as Kuala Lumpur pretty good value for money.

I find the cost of living numbers wise similar to here, except it is in MYR and not AUD

    For example
A meal in a hawker centre or food court would be 7-10 MYR = $2-3 AUD
A taxi ride might be 20 MYR = $7 AUD
Touristy attractions might be 30-50 MYR = $10-15 AUD
    A bottle of Coke 2 MYR = 70c AUD
A 4 or 5 star hotel is about 200 MYR which is $65 AUD

On top of that I have found it to be one of the better cities infrastructure wise outside of the 1st world Asian countries ie Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan

Much like other Asian cities around the area, heating is free, humidity is free, and the shopping malls are all air con'ed.

Vietnam for sure, yummy Pho and 1,800 km coastline from North to South, you can’t beat that :)

    • It's on my list. Easy to hop on a plane from the Philippines which is where I am now.

    Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia

    • Eastern European destinations are much cheaper that Western Europe destinations but we had our minds blown at how cheap things seemed overall in Czech Republic compared to the rest of Europe. Cool place, not totally over-run, interesting things, chill (but motivated) people, good food and lots of it for very little. Definitely add to a Euro itinerary if you can.

      • Sounds interesting. I heard that Spain, Portugal and Greece were cheaper destinations in Europe.

      • Re Czech Republic; Were you in or away from Prague ?

Go on a cruise, accommodation and meals can be had for $50-$80/day if you catch a good sale. My favourite destinations were Isle of Pines, Mystery Island, and Lifou. Noumea and Port Vila nothing to write home about.

    • +1

Oh Boy, Nouméa was such a hole

  • I got a month of from 19/05/18-17/06/18. Only wanna take about 2 weeks though from Sydney.

Having trouble deciding where to go. Prefer somewhere English friendly. Would like somewhere cheap but doesn't have to be. Been eyeing LA/San Fran and London so far which aren't cheap. I wouldn't mind a cruise but I got no idea about them. Could also go Singapore and then fly out to Malaysia or something from there. Although I'm not a huge fan of the heat.

I don't want to go Vietnam as I might go there next year with some friends. I went Japan last year and I don't think I can go back as it hasn't been 18months.

I'm not really into shopping. I love food, hiking and theme parks if that helps.
