What's Your Perfect Laptop Bargain?

I'm interested with ozBargainers thoughts of a perfect laptop.

Please list the spec, processor type, speed, ram, ssd, brand, and realistic price to expect (no trolling please)

My perfect laptop bargain would be:

  • 8th gen Intel i7 (processor speed is important for me). I'm not too familiar of AMD.
  • minimum 16 GB RAM, and upgradable to 32GB. DDR3 or DDR4.
  • no graphic card necessary.
  • SSD - NVME minimum 512gb.
  • Touchscreen - Either.
  • Weight and size: 13 or 14 inch, under 1.5kg.
  • OS: Windows. I have a bad experience with Macbook Air, the touchpad driver didn't work well for me in Windows bootcamp.
  • Brand: Anything as long as it has good warranty and support. If Apple has better touchpad driver in Windows, I would get Apple.
  • Price - under $2000.
  • Sample deal: I recently published Asus UX430UN. It meets all the spec above, except the SSD is SATA and RAM is non-upgradable. The price was $1600. However reviews said it has poor fan and heating issues.

A perfect laptop will be whatever specs you need to run your applications optimally. What's the point of this thread?

If you need advice deciding, state your uses/needs and people will help you decide.

Yep exactly, I personally wouldn't call a ~$2K laptop with no dedicated graphics card a 'perfect laptop' as per OP's description, but each to their own.

      • +2

Yep. Screen type and resolution is very important for me personally, but isn't even mentioned in OPs post.

To me this suggests OP isn't really sure of what he/she wants. Anyone trying to help without this information is only wasting time.

        • Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
I'm simply wondering what is it that people look for in a laptop.
As stuhtb said it he doesn't see a $2000 laptop without gpu a bargain. Some other people may see a laptop that is lightweight without GPU a bargain. Some may see a 2in1 a bargain, etc.

What do you mean by screen type? You might think a 4k laptop that weighs 3kg a good bargain at $2000.

@boohooimissout: I'm not having a go at you, but I'm going to try to explain why this thread is a complete waste of everyone's time.

I'm simply wondering what is it that people look for in a laptop.

That statement itself shows you have no idea what you're on about.

Different people look for different things in a laptop. What may be a good spec for you may be rubbish for what someone else might want to do with it.

As stuhtb said it he doesn't see a $2000 laptop without gpu a bargain

If you're a gamer (even a casual gamer), you wouldn't even look at laptops that haven't got a decent gpu in it. Another example of different strokes for different folks.

Some may see a 2in1 a bargain, etc

Lets say you're after a 2-in-1. It's got an Intel Atom with 64 gigs of eMMC storage. Its on special for $100 at HN, while JB Hi-Fi has it listed for $300.

You reason you need a 2-in-1 to show your clients UI prototypes and get their feedback while making real time changs in something like Adobe XD.

Still consider it a bargain for what you want to do with it? Cheap yes, fit for purpose? God no.

What do you mean by screen type? You might think a 4k laptop that weighs 3kg a good bargain at $2000.

If you're a professional designer (for example), you'll need to look at the screen panel type. A designer wouldn't go near a 720p TN panel (again, as an example).

Find me a 4K workstation that has a Quadro or Pro WX gpu weighing under 3K for $2000 and I'll genuinely buy it in a heartbeat.

Again, different strokes for different folks. List what you're after and you'll find people will be willing to help you.

What you're doing in your post is sending people of a wild goose chase.

@steff: Mate, do you honestly hoping to find threads that doesn't waste your time?
Reading and replying to this comment is a waste of my time.

        • @boohooimissout:

Replying to people who are trying to help you in a thread you created is and I quote
"replying to this comment is a waste of my time"

I give up trying to help you mate. Good luck with your search.

        • @steff: Thank you for giving up to help me.

One that meets my needs and is free

  • Organised the top of the line one of these recently for a friend: http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-7567-laptop/pd?oc=a5108…

Got it via the Dell Outlet at around $1300. If you want good laptop deals, keep an eye on the outlet, you'll rarely find anything better.

      That's pretty good deal

I dont think the average consumer can notice the difference between a SATA3 and NVMe SSD. Unless it is just for e-penis bragging.

  • One of the graysonline lenovo refurbs that came around recently : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359959

Been wanting a windows tablet for excel/word and capable of running touch-friendly-games / indie games but at the same time surfaces are expensive.

    • -1

I agree I missed out on that one.
Although I'm quite sceptical with buying refurb items. Some says that while it is working, it smells like a dead fish or smoke or tyre.

macbook pro full spec at 1/3 of the price

    • Yeah that would be 👍🏻

  • Keen to replace my 2nd generation Lenovo Carbon X1 with the new model that has the 8th gen intel i7.

Great machine for business on the road, but the 3.5 yr old machine is struggling now, esp docked powering two screens.
