Advice for NYC Trip

Hi all,

In March I am heading to NYC with 6 yo daughter. Just checking accommodation and wow, expensive. Any ideas on hotels, locations, deals etc?

regarding location, from memory the subway was easy to get around on, so doesnt need to be super central, but dont want to be in any dodgy parts or too far away from the action as will prob need have a break through the day.

$100-$150 per night , double bed or twin, private bathroom (if possible)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Yeah I don't like your chances on that budget in New York - I remember when I went there, the NY accom was more than the rest of my accommodation combined. Maybe you can get an Airbnb or something - But I doubt you will be in the city for that price.

    • True, yeah i looked at Airbnb and didnt look great either… hmmmm well obviously if need be can be flexible. Just my preferable price and options

      • Airbnbs/sublets are illegal in NYC for stays under 30 days, and sublets for this time have been well before Airbnb came around. Do not use this option.

Try looking for hotels that have shared bathrooms. Or those tiny hotels like those that Air Asia/EasyJet have (not sure if they have any in NYC but they might).

Also consider staying further away from the tourist spots (Long Island City/Brooklyn) and investing the ~$35US in a weekly metro card (public transport ticket) to get around.

    • holiday inn express - quite a few in manhattan, rooms are small, but breakfast is included(no tipping required as self serve)

Stayed at Homewood Suites by Hilton at 312 West 37th Street, New York.

Had a studio apartment. Small but cheap & got hot breakfast & when checked in they told us, buffet dinner free Mon to Thu nights & they even gave us wine & beers. Not a huge choice of drinks. Very good value & newish.

  • Are you looking to stay in Times Square? Very central

I have stayed at a few hotels with my wife in the past. Best one for budget would be below

    Edison
    https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g60763-d93437-Re…

Decor is old, but it is clean, and right in the centre of times square. There is a Starbucks nearby as well for the morning coffee and bagel runs:)

Are you going as a tourist? as, in do you want to do sight seeing or mainly shopping or just walking around?

    • Comes in at 165 AUD atm, so near your budget.

  • airbnb certainly your best bet. I actually prefer to stay around Soho. Anywhere around Broadway is close to subway and easy to get anywhere, and safe.

Sublets in private accomodation for less than 30 days are illegal in NYC.

With your budget you would be battling to get somewhere in Melbourne or Sydney, let alone anything half way decent in NYC

  • $100-$150 per night , double bed or twin, private bathroom (if possible)

That’s a very low budget per night. Also it’s now feb 13th. Why are you leaving it so late ???

New York is usually $200 a night. I’ll dig out where I stayed for around that and post back after work along with my tips for the Big Apple.

    • US$200 a night in my experience

        Alright done with work….

On your budget and in the time it will be difficult to find anywhere
        1) central
        2) in budget
        3) in a safe area.

Yes, Harlem isn’t as bad as it once was but it’s not somewhere you want to be staying really. I personally always try to stay in the SoHo area but fell quite in love with Chelsea last time I was there. Personally to save money I reckon you’d be better off in Brooklyn if you can find somewhere decent , in budget and most importantly no more than 10 minutes walk from a subway into Manhattan. Eg http://www.booking.com/Share-3c7nNJ

I’m going to stay in Brooklyn when I’m there (hopefully in December) just to mix it up a bit

As others have said you can also places like pod 39 which is just near grand central terminal and gives you access to quite a number of subway lines.

It’ll be small though and although for me in NYC, the hotel is just somewhere to crash. Although, with a 6 yo , they might be quite tired and need a rest during the day so it could be a bit too small.

You could try something like http://www.booking.com/Share-9KlxIig

Short term rental is illegal in New York and air bnbs often fall through so I wouldn’t suggest it.

  • Your best bet will be Air BnB, and yeah outside of the city. Public transport is good so no issue.

I stayed in Harlem which naturally isn't first pick.

But hey, authentic NY experience :)

  • I returned from the US a week ago. Didnt go to NYC but i've been going to the US skiing most years for the last 10 years (took a couple of detours to Japan and France). I have noticed that with their recovery prices over there are definitely on the march. I spent time in LA, SF and Salt Lake City (Skied in Park City). Loads of shops and businesses had signs up for 'Vacancy, enquire within' and things were a lot more expensive than I remember them from a few years ago. Accommodation is definitely one of those things that seems to be on the march. When we go skiing we use a US website that pre-dated Air B&B called 'Vacation rental By Owner' or VRBO. it is a similar concept to Air B&B but was around well before Air B&B. I'm not sure if there are places to rent in NYC, we use if for finding condos at ski resorts. Basically it is a booking service for people looking to rent out their unused apartments. it was work colleagues in the US that put me onto it years ago and it has been pretty good for accommodation in the past.

+1 for VRBO. Used in San Fran about 2.5 years ago (before AirBNB really took off) and was very happy with it.

The laws in NYC regarding AirBnB/short term rental is that they can't rent out the whole place short term. If they are living there, they can rent out a room/extra part of the place short term.

Everyone will probably tell you that you wont get a decent hotel in Manhattan on that budget and they'd be right.

Have a look at the Pod Hotels https://thepodhotel.com/ they are within your budget and in good locations. The room will be tiny and the bathroom a glass box in the corner.

Harlem has cheaper hotels than lower Manhattan and has become gentrified but its a long way up 110th street upwards, even on the subway it can take you 30 mins plus to get downtown.

You could consider staying in Long Island City which is in Queens, its only 2 stops on the subway into Manhattan, the hotels are much better value. Go for walk down the street in Google Street view before you book though, some hotels are in better locations than others.

Another alternative that works well if you are flying in and out of Newark airport is to stay on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. The PATH trains run frequently into Manhattan, not as good as the subway but from Hoboken Station its one stop into Christopher St station in the West Village or Exchange Place Station is only one stop into World Trade Centre.

    • LOL i went away to take a call finished my note when i got back then i saw yours above hehe

  • Maybe if price ends up being a major hassle look at the some of the places that run into Grand Central could be a couple of stops on the train into the GC then you can get where ever you want to get.

My parent's joined me last minute a few years ago over Christmas the prices were OTT especially last minute so they stayed in Jersey and jumped on the Ferry across when they wanted to be n Manhattan

Some other friends who were on a budget stayed at a place called POD 39 it had a rooftop terrace nice views, it was actually quite nice like a boutique hotel and fairly central it was slap in the middle of United Nations and Empire state building just off Lexington would take 15 mins or under to get to Times Square, UN, Empire State.

It was cheap too about 130 a night.

  • Ask the good folk over on Trip Advisor New York City forum - they will scream blue murder about AirBnB and such being illegal in the City of New York. It is legal in New Jersey, so if you want to look there and factor in transport that could be an idea.

  • Thanks for all the advice. I realise its a lot to ask with the budget i mentioned. But obviously if there were a lot of options that fitted the description I wouldnt have asked the OzB community. After a bit of looking it seems prices really jump when im travelling (first week of March), and there are quite a few good AirBnB options with private room. As many have mentioned this is not legal, however, they have a lot of reviews and just wondering what the possible pitfalls of doing it maybe??

Thanks again to those who took the time to provide some constructive information

  • Hey OZB members,

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I am also looking to travel to NYC sometime between September and October this year.

Looking for affordable accmmodation/hotels - somewhere (if possible) around or lower that $250 per night. Twin beds preferably.

Looking to hear feedback/experiences from OZB members from places they have stayed at.

    Cheers.
