Grass Coming up through Mulch :/

Hi all,

So I dug out a large garden bed and removed as much of the grass roots and weeds as I could. I laid down weed mat and then put around 10-15cm of mulch over this.

Unfortunately a lot of grass is coming up through mulch and it's becoming quite the chore to keep having to pull it up.

Was wondering does anyone have any tips of how to get this under control? I looked at grass / weed killers but I have plants / trees in the area so don't want to harm them.

Thanks a lot.

  • Glyphosate weedkiller (RoundUp), but only spray it when there is absolutely no chance of a breeze. Keep the spray fairly heavy (minumum of mist), and keep the sprayer head close to the soil/grass.If you do get any drift, it shouldn't harm any woody plants such as trees, but you should aim for a windless day anyway.

You need to kill the roots of the grass, so anything that just kills the leaf will be a waste of time.

Mullumbimby couch can grow through weedmat and is a real problem weed as it spreads under the ground. Try a selective weed killer before using Roundup.

use newspaper instead of weed mat

This. Much cheaper and just as effective. Try pulling the grass out and putting down more mulch.

  • Agreed. I put in lots of weedmat and weeds just grow through it! Cardboard is good too cos it doesnt blow around like paper…i found newspaper blew away faster than i could put mulch on it!

  • glyphosate

  • Add more mulch
