Recommendations for a Cheap and Nasty, but Loud Speaker

Looking for a cheap speaker for under the pergola that's fairly loud for when I'm working in the backyard. Currently have an old radio sitting there with a bluetooth adapter but volume isn't audible when I'm on the other side of the backyard.

Not much to go off, but I'm looking for something I can hear from about 15-20 metres away.

Don't really care what form factor, how it looks etc as it's likely just going to sit on top of the fridge with a bluetooth receiver and not be seen.

  • Would you spend… $439?
    Or maybe $245?

I'm sure you neighbours will enjoy your choice of music as much as you will.

Not smart enough to consider earphones like the rest of us?

    • Bluetooth range isn't long enough and phone can't be in pocket for all activities.

      • You'd be surprised how far Bluetooth goes.

Anyway, why Bluetooth? Dig up an old iPod or get a set of earphones that take an SD card.

        • Tried it, doesn't reach. Music offline is inconvenient.

@knk: Right, inconvenient. Annoying the neighbourhood with your cheap shitty speakers is a-ok though.

We aren't talking blaring loud music. We're talking loud enough to hear.

I don't get why a simple question turns into people being dicks, I was just chasing some frugal recommendations on a reasonably loud speaker that wasn't going to break the bank.

Fact of the matter is, if I'm using power tools I'm sure as shit not going to be wearing headphones for obvious safety reasons. Some audible music in the background isn't going to piss anyone off unless you're an absolutely dick. I have great relationships with my neighbors and they couldn't give less of a shit if I play some music on the weekend during the day. Everyone's already awake, no ones trying to get some shut eye or anything.

Of course you do. Doesn't everyone?

May your porn always have background music, and your neighbours embark on a a decade-long project repairing the exhaust on their Harleys.

  • Instead of a very loud music from a far distance! (Amp + Powered speaker)….
….why not a loud music from a medium distance? (bluetooth speakers)….

….or even a quite music from a close distance? (earphones)

Over-ear headsets, noise cancelling, are probably your best bet. But they require you to be tethered to your phone, and may be dangerous when you can't hear impeding danger (depending on the job). So regular earphones that are wireless could solve these shortcomings, but may not be very comfortable as a possible downside. The least compromise solution would be to get 2x JBL Flip 3 speakers. They work in tandem to create proper surround sound at high quality, and are fairly loud, durable, long-lasting and affordable.

    • Not a bad idea at all, was chasing something a little cheaper though. You know an option on a similar level would be to run some automotive or marine speakers, mount them to the pergola and front of the garage and wire it all up.

      Alot more work though lol.

  • I bought 1 from KMart that stands about 2ft for $99, it has radio, Bluetooth & aux for connecting to headphone jack. It has 3 speakers in it, works a treat for working in the backyard

  • Logitech Z623 :)

    • I have a set of those on the TV. Excellent for the price.

    • Yeah I'm thinking some computer speakers, most suggestions are above what I consider cheap and nasty.

  • What about this one

Miniso round bluetooth wireless speakers, $20 or $30, can't remember. I put it on when I hang up my washings in the back yard. Pretty decent sound quality.

    • Sounds like a go, thanks.
