A frustrating Redmi Plus 5 purchase from LIBT... need help pls

recently purchased a Redmi 5 Plus (4GB/64GB version) from LightInTheBox LITB (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/357165) and I want to fastboot the official global ROM onto it (9.2.6.0).

The phone arrived with the vendor installing MIUI Global 9.2.3.0 (the phone itself is clearly China version and vendor has installed an unofficial/beta Global version or something as its not listed on the Xiaomi website).

I do get an option to do an OTA upgrade (in About Phone) except this has bricked phones for people who purchased from LITB (see comments here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/357165).

When attempting to do the fastboot update to the correct ROM using MiFlash tool (http://en.miui.com/a-234.html), I keep getting a modem error. What am i doing wrong here? So frustrating…..

Please note that the bootloader is locked. Do I need to request an unlock? Didn't think I needed to.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I don't have much input on the matter, but that's shady as heck, I'm definitely not buying phones from them. Only reason why I can think of that they would install their own rom is to load adware into it.

I had something like that happen (but at least it didn't allow me to do OTA update) to my letv pro 1. Over the few weeks i started using it, it would randomly install random apps onto my phone. Eventually I was able to source the official rom and got rid of it.

Did you even read step 1?
"Devices marked with ★ are locked. If your device is locked, please click here to unlock it first."

    • Sure, if it's on ChinaROM. If on Global ROM already, bootlocker unlock shouldn't be required, it's just an update.
Have updated other Xiaomis in the past without bootloader unlock required.

      • Having done something in the past and having it work doesn't mean it will work now. Why cant you just request an unlock and try it?

        • Apparently for that, need to be on ChinaROM and connect to Chinese server using VPN. Read below dude….

  • PLEASE HELP!!!

    Phone is fine.

    • With all the adware and spyware…

    On that product site

    Q:
    Global Version or Not?
Why you keep saying it is a GLOBAL VERSION and customers reviews saying that is a CHINESE RUSSIAN VERSION??

It is shipped from where to Italy?

    Thanks

A:It is a fake Global rom. Once you update your system thru OTA over the air, your redmi 5 plus will be bricked and stuck in endless bootloop. The only way to solve it so far is to open the back of the phone and do test point to flash it back to Chinese rom. not sure it can flash back to global rom or not. However, the trouble did not stop there. You need to apply to unlock the device thru Xiaomi to flash offical global rom. Then you need to work it out how to get VPN in China to get the device connect to your mi account. After you have done it successfully, you need to wait 15 days 360 hours to unlock the device. Save yourself all these trouble by buying a real Global Version Redmi 5 Plus somewhere else.

    If any of that helps

    Try this:
Download the official global stable room from here:
    http://en.miui.com/download-340.html
    Follow instructions here:
    http://en.miui.com/a-233.html
Be sure to wipe when you boot to recovery before flashing the new ROM.

Plenty of resellers do this with Xiaomi phones.

You shouldn't need to have an unlocked bootloader to do the above.

    • Did all that, got modem error.

Check that there are no spaces in the full path of where you've put miflash and the ROM.

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/help/flash-mod…

My phone ran a lot better after I stopped using MIUI and went with another rom, AEX, lineage, etc. Too much bloatware in MIUI, and strange security and battery saving stuff that causes the mail to not retrieve anything, fitness apps not recording, etc.

    • Did that too - no go. :(

  • is their any legit sellers with the official global rom selling ?

    • Let me know of you find one

Will do. Probably get the note5 before this happens lol

        • See my comment below.

  • Post a photo of the screen error message. I've been utterly convinced I'd hardbricked my phone, only to learn of a fix.

    • Thanks will do

  • omgosh, no wonder im like why the fk is this so different to my redmi 4x note and why can't i use google play !!…
if you fix it please tell me how

    • You're on China ROM which is not as bad…

  • Is gold way on aliexpress the most trustworthy?

    • I just bought a Xiomi Mi Note 3 from HK Goldway on AliExpress. It said it came with official MIUI Global ROM, and it did. I flashed over the top with global rom downloaded from miui downloads site, just to be sure and it worked fine, using the built in Updater app which boots to recovery.

I checked using fastboot that the bootloader is locked, and it is (which I want it to be so I can use Google Pay if I want).

      I'll buy from them again.

      • PS: just over a week delivery, paid the $13 or so for express delivery. V good experience.
