Recommendation for Anti-Mould Paint for Bathroom Ceiling

We have issues with ventilation in bathroom which is why we start to get mould. We are going to be reprinting some of the rooms in our house which are susceptible mould. Was wondering if anyone has any advice on the most effective anti mould paint to use?

Firstly, I'm planning to use some mould killer on the bathroom ceiling (but which mould killer?) And then some undercoat and overcoat (but again which ?)

goto bunnings and get their advice, they know what to do.

    • I found Taubmans EasyCoat Paint with Microban to be excellent for suppressing mould. I used it on my shelves in the garage, which used to be black with mould. They are now sparkling white and have been for 2 years.

Microban is made of Zinc Pyrithione, which is a permanent antimould.

  • Get ceiling white for kitchen and bathroom and then whatever other colour paint you want for the walls but make sure it's the kitchen and bathroom version as it has an anti mould compound in it.

    • Yeah..actually just need to repaint the ceiling of bathroom which has got some mould

      • In that case just use ceiling white for kitchen and bathroom. If the paint is in decent condition and not flaking off, use some mould remover and then use sugar soap to clean the ceiling before you paint.

        • Thanks again. I don't fully recall now but the painter who did job at other house few years before said to use some specific undercoat after cleaning with mould removal….just cannot recall now what that undercoat is :(

        • @electricbluee: As @yippy said it's called 'bathroom & kitchen' paint, it just has an anti-mould additive in it (and killing the existing mould first is a good idea).

You can also buy the additive by itself and mix it with whatever paint you like.

Just say 'bathroom' at the paint shop. Every brand has some.

      • You need to remove the mould first, you can't just pain over it.

    maybe fix the ventilation first……………………………………………………..

  • Firstly, I'm planning to use some mould killer

Some guides say to use vinegar (a mild acid) and some say to use a borax solution (mildly alkaline). You should remove all visible mould, but at the same time realise that it's practically impossible to remove the microscopic mould spores that are embedded in your bathroom ceiling.

You should use a waterproof paint on your bathroom ceiling to keep water from reaching the mould spores. If water reaches the mould spores, mould will grow. Also, make sure you have an effective exhaust fan to minimise the water that settles on your ceiling. No paint will remain perfectly waterproof in the long term which is why mould normally comes back after a few years.

Dulux makes a paint labelled Precision Stain and Mould Blocker. Just remember that there's no magical chemical that kills the mould spores, the paint inhibits mould growth by being a water barrier.

  • Merged from Questions Re Painting The Bathroom Ceiling

Looking to buy white paint for bathroom ceiling (exisiting white painted) due to mould being biult up in last few months/years.

Went to bunnings and the guy recommended "Dulux White Ceiling +PLUS Kitchen and Bathroom Paint - 2L" but looking at the online seems this and Taubmans both got pretty bad reviews.

Dulux White Ceiling +PLUS Kitchen and Bathroom Paint - 2L
    $57.90

Q1: Can someone suggest better option please?
Q2: Also, does these paint (specifically Dulux) need any undercoat (and which one you recommend?)

Just a thought, repainting over the mould isn’t going to solve your mould problem. You might want to find out the source of the mould, is it due to poor ventilation or leak in the roof? Painting over it will cause the mould to reappear at some point.

      • Concur on that point. We had a bathroom once that looked like it turned into a Werewolf periodically. Fix your issues first then do the painting.

        • Thanks should mention that source is now fixed.

Please comment q1 and q2 please

        • @electricbluee: Sorry, in our case it was a rental property so we just cleaned it periodically with mould killer products. Obviously the paint they used didn't do the job.

There is a whirlpool discussion on this but, as usual, it just descends into people disagreeing about products.

  • The primer to cover mould would be Zinnser. Good but pricey. Mould will show straight through normal paint. Then mix in some white vinegar to top coat paint to stop mould coming back. You will notice anti mould paints smell like vinegar ;)
