Canon 550D Digital SLR

Hi All

I'm looking for a cannon digital SLR.
The one I have been looking at, a 550D is here:
http://www.techrific.com.au/canon-eos-550d-digital-slr-camer…
Does anyone have any thoughts as to where I may be able to get it cheaper?
I'm not set on the 550D, so open to any suggestions.
Also, has anyone had any experience dealing with techrific?
Thanks for your help!

You will definitely find cheaper price on grey imports. I've bought my 7D at DWI Digital Camera and had a great experience & great customer support.

550D is a great camera choice.

    i'm not impressed by them…
    "FREE SHIPPING"
but we will force you to pay 49 bucks worth of shipping insurance…
take john's advice and look elsewhere

    Citiwide are quite good. www.citiwideonline.com/au/
Postage is reasonable too. I ordered off them recently and it was here in less than a week, delivered at a price less than half the RRP. The EOS 550D is $690+$62 postage = $750. On paper, their warranty terms are quite good, although I haven't had to test it as yet.

If you want a AUS warranty try ryda.com. I got my 500D there quite cheap, with a package deal.. not quite as cheap as DWI (where I got my lens) but I knew is was AUS stock and warranty and it was valid to get the canon promo that was on at the time. Otherwise if you are happy with a grey import then I would say DWI. My lens arrived in 2 days to my desk at work. I saved about $400 off aust prices and that was even with purchasing a 7 year MACK warranty. BTW 550D is a great camera with some nice improvements on my 500D. I would strongly recommend this lens: http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/store/product.asp?idProd… (I paid $620 plus postage plus warranty 12 months ago so with the exchange rate you are laughing at the moment!)

I also have used citiwide for filters and they were not bad either. Just compare the prices between the eBay sotre and their website.. I found discrepencies between the same items or some items on offer in one place but not the other.

  • Thanks for all the feedback guys, very much appreciated.

I'm also not impressed by the compulsory shipping insurance.

I have just been checking out DWI and citiwide, both have prices I am pretty amazed with. I have only been looking at local stores until recently (JB hifi, harvey norman etc), and am so surprised at the savings that can be made.

An AUS warranty is something I do want, but the prices on ryda seem to be a fair bit higher than citiwide and DWI, so will probably go with one of the latter.

I'm happy to hear the positive comments about the 550D, all the reviews I have read have been good, so it looks like that is the way I will go.

Again, thanks for all the help.

  • I was looking at 550D for 2 months and was about to purchase from DWI (after looking at all the various grey importers) and at the very last minute, stumbled across the Sony A55 (thanks to the Oz Bargainers posting the Sony $100 cash back). After study specs, reviews, pics and video I ended up landing the Sony A55 twin lens kit. Video won me over with the autofocus (which 550D does not have). Can I tell you, have not regretted my decision one bit, despite everyone I know telling me I should have bought a Canon DSLR.

Do the research yourself. I didn't even have to buy a grey either, with the saving I managed to get from HN I would have saved only $20 (allowing for $100 cb) at the time of purchase had I bought from DWI. I also had the option of $100 cashback or accessory pack and I opted for the later which includes an extra battery, bag and lens protector.

P.S. Reviews suggested battery was one of the few downsides, hasn't been too bad but I am glad I got the spare as it as saved me a couple of times. Also note video has limitations with overheating (doesn't damage the camera though)… just have to let it 'cool down' for 5-10 minutes or so if you have recorded non stop in HD for approx 10 minutes.

Hope this helps. If you are buying from overseas, go with DWI. Good feedback on Whirlpool

  • The 550D has been around for a while now. I'd expect a replacement model to be released in the next 1-2 months.

  • The 550D is an Awesome camera, however look up the Sony A33, it has equal image quality for a much cheaper price. Ted's Cameras will price match it (the A33 with an 18-55mm lens) to $829 and you can get the $100 cashback Sony is offering to take it down to $729!
EDIT: Plus you will gen an Australian warranty!
