US/EU to AU Plug Bought from eBay - Unsafe?

Recently reading the comments on a gearbest deal posted for a US/EU to AU plug (before being removed just now), I came to realise some of the US to AU plug converters may be unsafe for the house. I recently bought this one from ebay:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/US-EU-Universal-to-AU-Australia-…

I am planning to use it a WAHL trimmer i recently bought from Amazon US (so naturally, it has a US power adaptor).

Will this be unsafe to use in my house? Are there any unexpensive alternatives for a US to AU plug which are safe?

Thanks in advance

It's safe. Don't worry too much.

  • does the power adaptor input 220-250v or 110v ?

    • Dual Voltage/International Use - It can be used for both 110v and 220v.

I read in a thread yesterday that (most?) Wahl US trimmers are 110V, so you may need a step down transformer not just a plug adapter.

It'll trim twice as fast. For a short while. ;)

    • From the product description:

Dual Voltage/International Use - It can be used for both 110v and 220v.

  • I am planning to use it a WAHL trimmer

    Is it multi voltage?

    I doubt it would be…

    • According to amazon, can be used for 110v and 220v

If the device you plug in is 220 V rated it is probably ok.

The issue is when you accidentally plug in a 110 V only device and it destroys itself/catches on fire from our 240 V electricity

    • Many years ago I didn't check and used a 110v one here, didn't destroy itself/catch fire, but it went ballistic like it was going to explode for the split second I turned it on. Step down converter didn't help either :(

    Bunnings travel adapters. $10

For $6 more, you could have something a lot safer and conforms to Australian standards rather than these poorly made, poorly insulated ones you plan on getting.

Those adaptors are complete crap - they're often loose in the sockets, and aren't approved for use in Australia.

Just go to OfficeWorks and get a "Universal Australia/New Zealand Inbound Travel Adaptor". They're only $5 and they're approved.
