½ Price Frico Maasdam Cheese Wedges $9.49/kg @ Woolworths

1040

In my humble opinion, great cheese from the deli at a very nice price. Enjoy :)

Maasdam cheese (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmaːsdɑm]) is a Swiss-style Dutch cheese. Made from cow's milk, it is aged for at least 4 weeks. It ripens faster than other Dutch cheeses. Maasdam has internal holes from the ripening process, and a smooth, yellow rind. Sometimes it is waxed like Gouda. The cheese was created to compete with the popular Swiss Emmental by being less expensive and quicker to produce.

In the process of making a cheese with the same general components as Swiss cheeses, the Dutch ended up with a cheese that is nutty and sweet, but softer than Emmental due to a higher moisture content. The style was introduced in 1984 by the Baars company as the trademarked Leerdammer cheese, though it is now made by other Dutch companies under the name Maasdammer. It is called after the village of Maasdam in the province of Zuid-Holland. (source: wiki)

    Agreed. Great cheese.

    • Yep time to do the keto diet and enjoy this cheese 😁

Is it made with ethically sourced milk and rennet?

  • How is this cheese in taste compared to Jarlsberg? I always assumed it was a kind of cut-price jarlsberg, but I've never actually tried it.

    • You would be hard-pressed to tell them apart in a blind test.

      • +1

I'm Dutch and I have to say it's nothing like Jarlsberg :) Easy to tell apart, this one has a better flavour to it. Try it out!

Personally like more matured Dutch cheeses, but they are almost impossible to get here.

        • From my experience, the temperature of the cheese when served and the age of the cheese or how it has been stored has a lot of influence on the taste. Even how it has been cut before serving has an effect on the taste.

Just wondering if you bought some and stored it for a long time would it taste matured?

        • +4

          @hugh:

nope, the maturing process is done as a whole cheese wheel (as the rind/crust protects the cheese), The wheels are matured on timber shelves and turned over daily. Maturing process is up to 18 months, but the general population would probably eat 6mo matured for daily consumption.

it's a milder and more nutty.

      • +1

But softer due to a higher moisture content.

  • +2

Never tasted this cheese, is it similar to Swiss cheese?

    • +9

Not quite in the same class as Jarlsberg, but very close. Melts beautifully under the grill on a slice of bread for the perfect toastie :)

  • Is it microbial rennet?

    • -2

What? This is a price deal post by a member not the cheesemaker (for they are blessed) how the, ehm, heck is the OP supposed to know that?

      • I don't think thats a unreasonable, after all it about the product and seems to be that there are so many fans here.
        It is the ingredient list.

    • +1

Ingredients only say “rennet” and it’s a “product of Holland”, so if it was made according to the EU law, it should be animal rennet, ergo:

      It’s not vegetarian.

Like the original parmesan, other hard cheeses, and original blue cheeses etc. Australian equivalents are usually vegetarian.

Moreover, it seems the deal is online only?

  • Can vouch for Maasdam. Hopeless if you’re trying to cut cholesterol

  • +3

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Edam is the best cheese, the only cheese that is made, backwards .

  • +2

and if you mention the code-word 'ArseCheese' at the deli, you might get a free surprise.

    • ArseCheese

      Blue vein?

      • Red vein usually.

        • That's a sign of ringworm, any itching.

  • I love Massdam, but some of the cheaper varieties sometimes contain a preservative (sodium benzoate). Hopefully this one doesn't.

    • +2

      (sodium benzoate)

      …that's bad.

      • Homer: Can I go now?

  • Cheese

  • Be careful to check the unit price on the packet. Some in the Woolies I went to had the old price so the wedge price was about $7 instead of $3-$4. Staff must have missed relabelling them.

It's the Chatswood Woolies Metro if someone wants to try to get a wedge free for mispricing. I was in a hurry.

  • Ohhh it's wedges not sliced this time :(
