Garuda is a full service airline

    debatable…

  • Worth noting that this "world's best cabin crew" was awarded by sky team. I'm unsure of their methodology, however, there are 20 airlines that form the sky team alliance, so I'm guessing they might be best out of the 20 airlines, as opposed to the best in the world… emirates, Qantas, Singapore, etc are not members of the sky team alliance…

Anyone know about Garuda air's safety record?

Edit: scratch that… awarded by sky Trax. Apologies….

Qantas and Emirates only rated 4 stars according to skytrax. Garuda get full 5 stars and I kinda agree with this. Garuda is very generous with their economy seat and I always get consistently good service.

Garuda used to have sketchy records. Europe banned Garuda for safety reason on the early 2000. However they improved a lot in every aspect. They no longer banned and win awards for the most improved airline. In terms of safety record, I'd say they are as safe as safe can be.

Indeed, a decade ago Garuda were often referred to as one of the most dangerous airlines in the world. They had many fatal crashes, which were partly attributed to the poor safety of Indonesian airlines in general. For a while, all but one of the lowest-ranked airlines in the world was Indonesian (Garuda is the national airline of Indonesia).

However, since 2009 Garuda have effectively had "new management", who have turned the airline around, from one of the worst to one of the best. Wikipedia has a good description of the history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garuda_Indonesia#Difficult_times_(1996-2004)
