Unable to Close Super Account

Hi ozbargainers,

I am unable to close my super account with this super company, they said that i would be required to ring my employer if i wanted to close the account. I no longer work with the workplace and unable to get in contact with them.

From my experience I could close my accounts myself with other super.

Reason to close account: Government contribution is sent to any of your super account and not the one that you made the deposit. and i dont want that to happen again

What can I do?

So have you moved all the money in it to another fund?

tell them that is a load of dog sh*t, for all you know your employer could have gone bankrupt, and if you want to close it you will it is your account and your right to do so, and id they don't you call the financial ombudsmen, or whatever is appropriate.

    • yeah, my employer from 5 years ago. They told me why don't I just keep the account it does not cost anything

    • yep will go down the financial ombudsmen path, is the website for them https://www.fos.org.au/. I'm unsure because thought it would be a .gov.au site

  • I'm with snake on this one. Even if it's an industry fund (like a police or teacher one), I have no idea why they'd need you to speak with your employer.

The way I see it is it's like a bank account - once it's setup your employer is just paying into it and they should have no authority in regards to closing it.

  • It is one of the fund policies (specific to yours). The termination of the account has to be from the employer itself. They are suppose to send through a termination advice when you quit. This is quite common practice in a number of superfunds.

    • interesting, my 3 other supers closed without employee. This is colonial first super

      • As I said, this is a fund specific policy. So not every fund will have this requirement.
