Need Help With RGB Light Strips

Found some spare RGB light strips around the house and decided to decorate my server room with the RGB strips.
Once everything was in place I turned it on and found that only parts of the RGB, glow. Here is an image of what it looks like:

Anyone know the issue?

  • That earthing cable is not connected to the door
R G B and + all have contact with the power?

    • Yep, they are all connected with the arrow pointing in the correct direction. The earth is not connected because I'm using an external PSU and not the one on the rack.

      • could have a break somewhere in the led run.

Does the PSU supply enough power?

    Cactus.

Cheap strips fail like that after a while, even just sitting on the shelf. I think the solder joints fail as the strip flexes or something.

They way they're wired up is in groups of three (LEDs are assumed to be 3v~ish, so 3 in series plus a resistor works for 12v), then all the groups are in parallel along the strip.

Your photo shows groups of 6 lit up so that's 2 sets of LEDs. If you count the dead ones they'll be in multiples of 3 as well. You should see the 'cut here' marks at the edges of each group of three.

The LEDs that are lit seem to failing as well. They should be all the same colour, I'm guessing the controller is trying to show white (RGB all on). If you cycle through the modes you'll see where some LEDs have a colour missing (eg blue & green work but not red).
