[NSW] Indomie Mi Goreng Box (80g X 40) for $9.49 @ Sanfa Supermarket, Cabramatta

870

Spotted this yesterday at the Sanfa supermarket in Cabramatta - $9.49 is a great deal for the export-quality Indomie Mi Goreng 80g x 40 box. Normally these are $12-$15 in Asian grocery stores, and sell in packs of 5 for $2.75 at Coles (thus would cost $22 for the same 40 packs).

Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take a photo of the stack of boxes or the price, so instead I'll upload a photo of the receipt. Please don't judge my other purchases (although Mamee noodles 10-pack for $1.58 is a reasonable bargain in itself right?).

For those who aren't familiar with the area, Sanfa supermarket is the modern Asian grocery store inside the arcade connected to the Dutton lane carpark (aka the one with the public bathrooms).

Also, before anyone asks, I do not believe this offer is available online.

What's the best before date on those?

    • Will check when I get home later but I've bought from here before and never had any issues… but then they've never been this cheap.

Best before? Indomie mi goreng? Hahahaha!

      • +6

They are the best before you eat.

I was a student once, all I see here is 3 weeks worth of food for $30, allowing for the rest to be spent on beer.

    • +1

      and energy drinks…

  • -7

How many? 40…far too many. I want them in a pack of 5 which will still last me weeks.

Good deal though for those that eat noodles every day.

I normally buy a pack of 5 for under a dollar and add my own seasoning, oil, soy sauce and chilli sauce. It's convenient having the sachets included but I personally think it's cheaper buying the sauce yourself and adding whatever amount you want.

    • +18

I used to do this too especially as it may be healthier if you put your own combination of kecap manis & sesame oil, but there's something addictive about the original Indomie flavours…

For ultimate student life though, I used to do 2 packs of Indomie but only use 1 set of seasoning/sauces so I could then reuse them in the future when I bought the 5 pack of plain instant noodles…

      • -8

not sure what to feel, so many mixed emotions.

Happy to see tight arseness reigning supreme by using 1 packet of flavouring.
Horrified to see you do 2 packs in one sitting.

Please tell me you shared between 4 people?

        • +1

Two packs mi goreng with a beer stein full of Milo used to provide plenty of energy for study back in the day.

        • +1

I often feel that two packs isn't enough for a filling meal, so I'd go for 3.

    • +1

Good deal though for those that eat noodles every day.

I love these, but these noodles really shouldn't be eaten every day …

    • +2

Impossible to mimic the real thing believe me I have been trying for years. Even the kecap manis you buy from the Asian grocery stores or Woolworths or Coles is not the same and the seasoning constantly evades me.. one day maybe one day.

      • +14

I managed to replicate the flavour 99% accurately just recently.
For the seasoning (In order of quantity): Sugar, Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, White Pepper, MSG replacement (Umami).
For the MSG replacement: 6g Bonito Flakes, 3g Dried Kombu, 3g Dried Shitake Mushrooms. (You will need an Asian grocer) Blend with a spice grinder into fine powder.
Toppings: ABC Kecap Manis, Any Chilli Sauce, Fried Shallots/Onions.

I haven't got exact measurements for the seasoning yet, so play around with it and see how it tastes!

Not sure what it says about me, but after seven years on OzBargain this is the first thing I've ever bookmarked.

        • @ronorboris: Just did so as well, reminds me of how I've searched for decent recipes for fried rice, nothing I've found ever tastes or even just looks right once cooked.

  • Do they deliver lol? I know a household of guys that would benefit from this badly.

    • -6

Only if you are Vietnamese mafia they will deliver. No chance for aliens.

  • 40 for a month, too much my friend

Used to get it for $9 at Springvale.

  • +1

I would love to get this deal if I lived in NSW.

I was gonna see how much I could save if I just ate instant noodles for a whole month after realising I spend almost $40 a day on lunch and dinner break then about $30-$40 on ingredients just to make 3 afterwork meals

    • +1

Dude that is waaaaay too much money. Are you a single person? You need to learn how to make meals for yourself. If you're single, it doesn't even need to be fancy. You can make one meal with multiple servings and it will work out cheaper and healthier than instant noodles. Do you have a stove top or an oven?
If you're spending $40+ a week for a five-day* work week, that's $200 just for that. I have a family of five and I spent about $250 total for a whole week for us to eat, and I know I could make it cheaper because I spend too much on snack food.

      • Yeah I have just recently moved into our own home. I’m married and I just have to justify learning to make meals that can last for a few days, not just one night.

Can you give me some tips on cost efficient meals which won’t break the budget? Thanks

        • +2

You should try the marinated chicken pieces from coles. You bake the whole tray and cook two cups of rice. That will provide all the protein and carbs you need for a balanced diet. From there you can just add some veggies and you've got a week's worth of healthy meals.

        • @Tasmaniac: is fresh veggies better or can frozen do as well?

        • +1

@ireadtermsofuse: I use the frozen, it's just a bit easier then cooking them fresh.

      • it will work out cheaper […] than instant noodles

        $9.49 / 40 = 0.23725

(Home brand 5 packs are pretty similar, I think)

I'm interested to see your recipe for a 23c meal. Even 50c would be impressive. I've done the live below the line thing, $2/day, and that wasn't much fun.

        • +1

          Coles 500gm beef mince $4
          Coles Spaghetti pasta $1
          Raguelleto Bolognese Pasta Sauce $1.70
          1 carrot 50c-ish
          1 Zucchini 90c-ish
          Equals $8.10

You can easily get 5 serves out of that. Easily.
          $8.10 / 5 serves – $1.62 a serve.

If you buy a kilo of mince and use the other 500gm for another meal, you get that for $7, so the 500gm comes down to $3.50, which means $7.60 total.
          $7.60 / 5 serves
          Equals $1.52 a serve

If you buy carrots in a 1kg bag and not one by itself - 1kg of carrots is $1.20. How many carrots you get in 1kg? 10? That comes down to 12c a carrot.
If my math is correct that will then make it $1.44 a serve.

So, okay, yeah, you're correct. I can't think of a meal for 23c a serve. But you can't tell me that a bowl of spaghetti, with grated carrot and zucchini mixed into the spaghetti sauce while cooking, isn't a better option for you than living off two-minute noodles.

And those are supermarket prices I just listed. Coles, actually. If you can get a kilo of mince from a butcher for cheaper, or Woolies is having a special on mince, or you pick up a zucchini from a fruit market for 4c, well, I don't know, you might be able to get it down to $1 a serve. Or if you pick the homebrand spaghetti sauce for under a $1.

It's not about making a MEAL for 23c. It's about making a big meal and getting many servings out of it. I lived below the poverty line too when I was younger. It's always better to have a big comforting meal at the end of the day then (profanity) two-minute noodles. You need to spend more on the initial ingredients but you get many servings out of it.

        • @moneymoo: Solid recipe. I actually don't mind the occasional noodle meal, but yeah, their nutrition is, at best, not fantastic. Your spag bol is vastly better on that front, and well worth paying for.

Man I feel like eating pasta now. Although I would blow the budget by the amount of cheese I add to each serve ;)

    • I just started my 2018 budgeting as I am getting serious about savings and so cooking cheaply is very important now.

Some cheap ideas are Fried rice with eggs, leg ham, spring onion, onion, peas & corn. All these ingredients are SUPER cheap and its so easy to make it tasty with the smokey ham. I cook a lot and bring to work for the week.

Vege soup with celery, carrots, potatos, tinned tomatoes, turnip and parsnip. Again, super cheap. Eat with bread.

Vegan pasta involving tinned tomatos, celery, carrot, onion, and dried herbs. Costs absolutely nothing and is good for you. Use mince if you must.

Three pretty simple ideas and will cost you under 40 for the entire week.. I also eat lots of fruit cheaply like pears for 99c a kilo, bananas for 3 bux a kilo. Beats buying muesli bars & yogurt and all this other expensive crap.

        • Slight diarrhea? Is that even a thing? Is that type 6 on the stool chart or is that a mixture of Type 5 and 7 in the same sitting?

          @azngamer:
It's more like a slight pop explosion (not like AK47 ratatat brap but more like a typical manual handgun pop) but not runny runny and it disappeared after a day.

And yet I still ate it knowingly I'd face the music later that day.

  • Costco was $10 as well I think.

Costco is the SuperMi ones which I believe are an inferior product to Indomie

  • Just google “effect of eating too much mie goreng” for anyone who concerns about health or having health issue at the moment. And it’s not just for mie goreng , but for any instant noodle basically .

    • +10

I'm sure if you google "effect of eating too much" of anything then it will give you concerns about your health. Everything in moderation.

      • Very true , especially when the box is staring at you everyday tempting you to eat it daily .

Hey im just wandering are many Instant Noodles unhealthy, e.g. Contain Wax which can give you cancer?

Non the less im not gonna stop eating my Mi-gorengs but am just wandering.

      • +1

I hope they've found somewhere and haven't been wandering this whole time

  • Any other bargains at that store?

    • I think it has a few decent bargains eg mamee noodles, but like most groceries, there’s no single store which is best price for everything. That being said prices on average are better than city stores, decent range, easily accessible to car park, it’s clean and well lit, and accepts credit card so I’m happy to shop here’s.

Previously I’ve bought moon cakes and sauces here which were cheaper than what I usually see elsewhere.

IMO if you haven’t been to Cabramatta, it’s worth the visit to check out the groceries and eat some authentic and reasonably priced Asian food eg pho.

Head on over to Phu Quoc for the combination rice paper rolls as entree, then Tan Viet for cripsy skin chicken on dry egg noodles, then head on over to Park St for the $5 3x medium sugar cane juice, then finally grab a pork banh mi roll for $2.50 to go <3

  • Any place in Melbourne to get it under $10?

    • come to cabra and you will.

  • Please don't judge my other purchases

Weekly grocery shopping done. A packet of instant noodle a day for dinner

  • From the look of the box, my guess it is for Indonesia domestic market which tastes better than the 'for export only'. Probably contains more msg though 8)

    • +1

It’s the export product version. Surprisingly it’s cheaper than the domestic Grey imports you can find at other Asian grocery stores.

Anyone know where to get the ibumie version in Perth? Tastes a lot better!

    Edit: https://www.theramenrater.com/2015/12/13/1862-ibumie-always-…

    • +1

That's a Malaysian product, and I haven't seen it in Perth. If you have even the remotest chance of finding it, try Market City Gourmet Food in Canningvale, or MCQ Supermarket at Coventry in Morley. In saying that, I frequent both places regularly and can't say that I've seen it there.

Perisa is a Malaysian word (Perisa Asli = original flavour, see the front of the pack), the equivalent word in Indonesian would be either be Rasa or Bumbu. Both basically describe Flavour.

      • That's because I am, and I've just moved here!

I've been to both Market City in CV and Coventry - no luck (I live near CV!). It's funny cos there are heaps of Malaysian products including Maggi and Mamee etc. Seems like a missed opportunity?

  • -2

Hey OP are you Indonesian by any chance? Your receipt indicates so.

  • +2

I've eaten migoreng well after its best before date. Still great.

    • Lots of items are safe to eat after best before date. See this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1rZAT2GtmI

      • Yes, but it's usually the oils that go off. In this case, the oil inside the seasoning packets can go off if left for too long. Though I left it about 5 months after its Best Before date, I probably wouldn't be game enough to leave it for a whole year.

        • If this has happened to you, you can use sesame oil instead of the original oil sachet. It won't taste the same, but it'll taste good (in my experience). Also, if the sweet soy sauce or chilli sauce have gone hard, you can just use any generic brand of kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) or chilli.

  • what's the difference between the export and grey imports ?

    • +2

No local warranty with grey imports.

    • +1

grey imports have less restrictive amount of questionable ingredients, so…taste better.

Always buy this if it's available :p

Shop closes at 8pm. Got a better photo for you guys.

    • Plenty of stock left!

  • I only eat the maggi 99% fat free noodles or the hidden wholemeal one (which has even less fat than the 99% free ones). Only concern with them is the amount of salt so I only use 1/2 packet of flavouring. Most 2 minute noodles are very high in fat, everyone should avoid them.
