Question about Buying Used Mercedes from Dealer

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with car yard used vehicles.

I am currently looking at buying a Mercedes hatch from a certified Mercedes dealer in my area.
Saturday I went and checked the car out as it was advertised for $29,990 on CarSales.

When I arrived I noticed the slip in the window had the price listed as $32,990 (plus fees)

During the test drive with the young salesman, he mentioned that the price had been reduced to $29,990 (plus on roads) as they noticed it was overpriced in comparison to some others in the country - but that there was still a little wiggle room in the price - he suggested coming up with a low offer and he will take to his boss and then come back and we can negotiate the deal

Later in the afternoon I sent him a text and offered $26,000 including fees and he said he would check back
He told me his boss said $28,000 + fees was the lowest he can do, I then offered $27,000+ and he said that "I dont want us to be wasting each others time so $28k is the lowest price"

I said to him, that if we can meet at $28K INCLUDING FEES (fees are around $1400) then I was willing to do the deal and take the car
He messaged me and said "let me speak to my boss, do you think you can leave a deposit over the phone" - I agreed.

I then called him up to leave a deposit and he said okay so the price is $28K plus fees, he said I misunderstood him and then told me to think about it and contact back Monday as this was 4:30pm Saturday.

Anyway - Have I pushed the price to the lowest possible? Or is he some kid trying to play hardball?

I dont think I am being unreasonable going in for a car advertised at $29,990 + $1400 in fees then being told we will do this for $28k ($29400 inc.) and asking for $28k all up…

Anyone work at a dealer or have any idea?

    Is it an AMG?

    dont buy a merc.

    • Thanks, But I don't want information on what car to buy. I'm looking for information on how much room the dealers have on dealer used vehicles.

      • +2

        buy a toyota.

      • +8

Too many variables. This forum specialises in AMGs only.

        Thread closed.

      • He has $28K room to move

    Blah blah blah…

    Buy a Toyota/Mazda/Honda.

    Case closed.
You're trying so hard to save a few bucks on a luxury vehicle. I am going to laugh when you get your first service bill or have to replace some parts when you visit the garage every 3 months.

mercs are well known to visit workshops alot

      • +2

        Their bi-montly workshop migration.

When they return to the herd.

    • So true :)

  • Curious why you are buying a Merc? Like seriously don't buy a merc . Its easier to buy an elephant, hard to maintain.
But if you still to , I'll rather suggest buy it from Auctions (since you will get the condition report , which IMO is more useful).
You will save few thousand $$ which can easily be used for service.Good luck.

There is no statutory guarantees with auctions. Op may get this when purchasing from a used dealer depending on the state, age of the vehicle and the kms.

  • What exactly are these BS "fees"?!

    • Transfers. It sounds like the dealer is trying to organise transfers to save the buyer the hassle of doing it them self.

    plus fees

    These are government taxes.

I wouldnt buy a merc out of warranty with a barge pole. Parts and service costs are horrendous.

  • +4

Second hand Mercedes? A big NOOOOO :)

  • It's simply a matter of whether or not you want to do the deal.

Just as the dealer probably could come down in price/cover the fees, I'm willing to bet you could afford to buy the car and pay the fees on top.

Is this the lowest price possible? Only the dealer themselves could possibly know the answer to this.

  • +2

If you don't like the price, don't buy it. Tell the dealer you've given your offer and that's it.

Be prepared to walk away - that is the only way you will get a great deal.

    • Nope. You are walking out because the sales team is incompetent or they are walking you because you are wasting their time as you won't commit or you are asking for an unrealistic price.

Any numbers thrown at you as you leaving are 'one time' to stop you from buying else where. If you accept, that price won't be accepted by management.

  • “Anyway - Have I pushed the price to the lowest possible?”

Asking if price is the lowest dealer can go but refuses to give information on the exact model 🙄

No one can tell you answer
This all depends of lots of variables
Eg Dealer might say no today but might say yes to 25k in a months time if it hasn’t sold

    I would walk away
If he doesn’t call you back in 3 days then pay it if you really want it

I personally would be too scared to touch an old merc no matter how cheap as one visit to the garage might cost you 15k
But sometimes you have to experience the pain to learn

    It’s a risk reward

You still get some type of consumer protections with auctions

Maybe you can also look at purchasing an extension of the FULL manufacturers warranty from Mercedes - I’m a hater of these but ACL has some grey areas in relation to buying second hand cars

  • Today that is a good deal. If you want the car, accept it.

Or you can wait a month and come back with your low offer and hope the car has not sold (used cars should be priced to sell within 4 - 6 weeks).

Any decent sales person is going to forget about you after a few days because you are taking their attention away from people who want to buy cars now.
You are not moving from an offer below what management will approve, so you are not a customer.

If they were desperate to sell they would only be able to drop hundreds as the car would already be below cost, both on the net and in the yard.

  • you might as well have asked whether or not you are getting a deal on a "car"

    • +1

Might have saved some of the ‘don’t buy a merc’ replies.

If YOU think it is worth 28k incl fees then don’t pay more. If THEY won’t sell it for 28k incl fees and you still want it, you have to pay what they ask.

End of the day, it’s a used car there are plenty out there. If it want it, buy it. If it is too much, find another one.

Price drop = Official Announcement of new variant - the new upgraded model which they will start and probably have been taking orders for.

He is playing you and probably has a side bet with his boss as to whether he can get the extra from you.

Stick to your discussion if you were both happy at the time with the 28 then keep it the there and tell him he obviously misunderstood and actually agreed to 28 flat.

The cars are going to keep coming down in the coming months now that an official date has been committed for the 2018 models, depends how desperate you are.

Just neg him call him out in front of his boss that you agreed and now it's being twisted what have you got to lose plenty of cars around. give him a lower counter offer and let him think about it.

Thats why he wants it done over the phone. once they have their Paws on cash they will leach everything, once they have you in clutches

    • Nice car but thats a lot of money to drop on a 5yr old hatchback in appliance white.

    • +1

      4cyl shitbox. 9.1 sec to 100km/h.

      • 20yr old vtec yo!!! is faster than most merc. today

    • +1

Jesus what a pile of shit, just needs an amg badge

    • +2

That is the poverty Mercedes. For people who only care about a badge and not an actual car. For that money you could get a new I30 with all the bells and whistles, and it would drive just as good, but have more luxury, and be cheaper to run.

It is Mercedes car to sell to people who want the badge but realize they could never afford a real Mercedes

    • The ad shows $29,990 drive away ie fee included. So basically the dealer offered a measly $590 discount with their $28k plus fee 'final' proposal???

  • There is usually still a 10% margin in what they say is "the lowest price." So its owing them at least 26,000 excluding any fees. Problem is, its a business like any other, they need to pay rent, staff, utilities etc so they're not gonna be giving things away at cost price every time. Only way to get it at or below cost is if its been on the lot for awhile and is starting to cost them more money to keep than what they accounted for in the margin.

  • What year model is it?
As a previous Lister said, wait it out and don't budge. Don't call them either.
    These cars depreciate significantly

Can I suggest not to buy a used Merc out of warranty or at all. The dollars you think you will save now will be eaten up in the first service especially if any mechanicsl issues. Merc service is also renound for being difficult on warranty items anyway. Its not worth the pain, just for the badge. I can tell you there are always better ones out there. If this car is sitting in yard it will just get cheaper the longer you wait. Go test driving as many cars in your budget.

Go try another dealer or even 3 more. That is the best way to find out
