Is Newdomain.com.au Dodgy? Received a Weird Letter

I received a strange letter after a recent business name registration. The letter is from New Domain Services, which details how I can register a domain with them for $120 AUD for 2 years.

That seems a bit steep after some looking around on Google.

Is this company legit but just expensive?

Which domain registrar should I go with?

I've had good service from VentraIP.

Anything over about $15 per year for an .au and you are being gouged

I'm assuming the domain you registered is already a .com.au? It's not uncommon for companies to do whois searches on Australian websites and hound them for web hosting, development and domain registration. This is where whois protection on other TLDs comes in handy.

    • I should add that I have not registered any domain currently. I'm looking to register.

It's just a company that sends spam to newly registered businesses, charging ten times the market rate for domains…

Just buy from GoDaddy or VentraIP

Thanks for all the responses and information. I will look at VentraIP as they seem to get good reviews also.

Good choice. I previously used them for years without any issues. Very good experience.

    • I think Zuver is a bit cheaper and they're the same company as VentraIP. Have been hosting with them for 18 months now without issue.

Does that include a VPS or just a domain? You can get a .com.au domain for only $16 for 2 years at go daddy. I've set up several of my clients with Go Daddy and it works great. Fast support and easy to change the DNS Servers.

    • It only includes the domain for that price. I ended up going with VentraIP.

      • Though if you know your way around any webapp programming language you can host for free with Heroku, and just pay for the domain name

  • For the domain name, just choose the cheapest one as they are all resellers anyway. Zuver charges $11/year for .com.au domains.

Hosting is more complicated. Do your homework and choose a reputable one.
