Isn't this a better deal here?

Not sure about the Seagate drive, but with this one, it has a WD Red drive which is most suitable for removing from the external case for NAS usage (OP is missing this key selling point).

I bought this a few days ago for 183.99 USD and now I'm crying inside.

      Previous discussion here.

      • The Seagate one has the barracuda fyi. Not sure how that compares to the WD Red?

I'm too looking for a 8TB external HDD to so I can shunk it and whack it in my desktop. Any recommendations? Looking to spend as cheap as possible

The brand Barracuda by itself doesn't say much, it depends on the series and model as well. From the Homr's linked thread, it looks like it's a ST8000DM004 ie. average desktop hard drive which fits your purpose.

The quality of WD Red is higher than your average desktop hard drives, which makes it suitable for NAS usage (higher operation times). The cost of them are also higher (256 USD @ Amazon) which is why this deal is actually great.

        • @ronnknee: How do you know that this had a WD red in it?

        • @Ronney:

Did you read the previous discussion?

@ronnknee: oops sorry. I missed that link. Sorry. Thank you very much.

Seagate uses SMR to get the extra capacity. If your data is important to you it is probably safer to go with the WD drive which does not use SMR.

      • WD cost an extra $40 tho :(

        • We're comparing apples with oranges here. WD Red is an overkill for normal storage.

        • @ronnknee: Define normal storage? Is storing media like movies, music and playing them on a daily basis classified as normal storage? If not, what is WD Red used for??

          Thanks.

        • @ronnknee: I have to agree with Homr, it depends on your use case. For systems that run 24/7 in small NAS like enclosures, the higher tolerances of a Red drive would be beneficial. I would classify a home NAS as a fairly normal storage solution.

        • @FuRyZ:

What exactly are you agreeing with Homr? WD costs an extra $40?

When I say normal storage, I mean plugged into the computer, occasionally accessing it and computer is turned off when not used. If it's shacked and placed into a NAS running 24/7, then I wouldn't say that's normal use.

My point is, if Homr isn't running it on a NAS or 24/7 and isn't willing to fork out the extra $40 then he can get away with saving $40 and buy the Seagate external drive instead?

      • Not true, Seagate is not the only company using SMR, WD and HGST also use it. All the companies don't use it on all their drives, and they do have premium product lines that dont use the technology.

  • Doesn't the MyBook series use hardware encryption which makes your HD unreadable elsewhere if the USB/SATA converter goes bad? I suppose if you are going to shuck the case then it doesn't matter.

I've stuck to the Elements series which doesn't have hardware encryption.

    • Running 4 easystores in my NAS, no problems at all. These will be standard drives with no encryption.

      • Easystore seems to be a different series, and also as I wrote the encryption is in the USB to SATA converter which you discarded with the case.

  • pardon my ignorance, but will this be fine plugged into an AU adapter? - purchased anyway, will deal with the consequences after

    • It will come with a power supply which will work on 110/230V. It may have interchangeable heads for the power pins, or be US only in which case you just get a plug adaptor.

US plugs bend nicely to match Au plug. Not recommended but it works.

        • Yeah that's possible. I've done shadier things. I took to Cuba (US sockets) a US cord that I had soldered a pair of insulated crocodile clips onto. I attached the clips to the battery charger (this was before smartphones) before turning the power on. Just to use what was in my junk box instead of buying an adaptor.

I gave that cord to the owner of casa particular I stayed in before leaving. It seemed appropriate to the improvisation ethos there 😃

  • Brought it 184$ few days ago,

Got exact same drive last year, not as quiet as previous model. But good price per TB.

Seagate seem not as good as they used to be

    • Is it a single hdd or is it an enclosure with 2 hdds inside? i want to pull the drive out.

      • mine is single drive.

        • yeah i ended up getting mine and it was wd80ezaz so stoked with it. finally i have free space on my pc.

  • There is a Youtube video of how to shuck it (of course.)
It also shows how to do some surgery on the Sata to USB thingo so you can use it with other drives.
Yes, WD does something that prevents other drives being used.

  • Just pulled the trigger and bought one. Is shucking this hard drive and putting it into my PC going to be easy?

    • +1

YouTube has lots of videos. Just be aware that once you have put in PC the MBR of HDD will be modified and it will no longer work in the external casing due to casing controller encryption chip. However, if you are brave you can disconnect encryption chip on casing controller and reuse casing with this reformatted HDD or other HDD. YouTube has videos of this also.

      • awww what? I was planning to re-use the enclosure and put my 4TB HDD in there.

        • Cut the relevant pin/pins on the encryption chip and you should be good to go.

        • @rifter: I'm not good with these things….I probably end up setting it on fire :(

        • @Homr:

          Like this?

        • @ronnknee: Exactly!

  • Thanks OP.

  • Just received mine which I bought before this deal. Haven't shucked it yet.

Now sold out on Amazon (wishing I had bought more).
