Aussie Farmers Direct in Administration

Aussie Farmers direct has entered administration and is to close right away.

“Online fresh food delivery company Aussie Farmers Direct has gone into administration and will close immediately, leaving more than 100 franchisees and 260 employees out of work.”

I’ve seen quite a few deals on OzB for Aussie Farmers - I’m not sure how many members are customers at the moment. It would be worth cancelling any direct debits you have with the company, just in case they are still processed as normal.

Damn, should have signed up for some more free trial offers before they went under

    • +1

Not sure why you've been downvoted.

The free trial offers was their stupid decision, not ours.

They have been around for long enough and to know that nearly all of their customers just want the initial discounted box before they cancel, thats their business model.

They either wanted the company to go bankrupt or they win the award for worst business decisions, probably even worse then Doughnut Time.

Their free trial/discounted box offers were simply predatory, they offered a reasonable intro price and then hoped you forgot to cancel before it was too late. Good riddance to them and any other company offering such a predatory product

        • It was more then forgetting to cancel. While more common in the past, the biggest tactic they had was for you to not even know that a second box would be coming and that you would have to pay full price.

        • all the other vendors are doing the same Marley Hello Youz

I really resent these offers because they devalue 'me' as an ongoing loyal client
I get charged higher to subsidise these bonus offers.
and simply results in us their customer to regularly cancel and renew to create value and negatively impact their model

I wish they will all end the counter productive practice

      • What was doughnut time business decision that you were referring to?

        • Probably the most important thing for me was price, it used to be $5 a doughnut, it then became $6.80-7 a doughnut.

Besides poor business direction, didn't innovate since they opened in Brisbane.

The doughnut bread seriously needed improving

Some of the flavours were just not up to standard

In my opinion they did one thing right, they made things like the Nutella doughnut that actually had the correct amount of Nutella.

Problem is that at $7 its cheaper for me to buy a 12 pack of doughnuts that are better then theirs, buy a large jar of Nutella, and then put it inside the doughnut.

    • I've had a few free trials and I feel really REALLY BAD.

Maccas is the only franchise worth being in

Sooo long. thanks for the freebies

  • Wow that’s a real shame.

Gone are the days when business take their survival for granted.

The stuff that AFD used to sell could be bought for a fraction of their price from local outlets.

The pay-for-convenience mentality is quickly going down the drain.

  • Sadness.
Their prices where a rip off all the time.
$8 for one banana? No thanks

    • +1

      But its direct from farmers!

(but also comes from the same supplier and has the same sticker as the woolworths banana)

    What an absolute useless company.

    • They have overpriced groceries most of which comes from the same place the supermarket gets it from.

    • Their whole business model was to trick a customer into signing up by giving them an insane discount that Aussie Farmers Direct lose money on, and then almost force them into receiving the next box and paying full price so they could make a profit on the customer, then hope the customer is too lazy/busy to cancel future boxes.

    • Their original business model included making misleading claims at your front door when their salesmen would come, as well as making misleading claims when you sign up over the phone. You had to fight hard to dispute this and they would always go back to the recorded phone call you had with them where their staff would slip in things like how they were going to make your one off box purchase, a reoccurring box purchase.

    • And what do they do when its clear their business is failing? They attempt to save their business by literally giving away meals, as we saw on ozbargain.

After all this time the business never learnt anything at all, they thought they could have a successful business by treating customers like they were stupid.

It's a shame. I used them here and there when I needed to. I found them to offer reasonably good quality fruit and vegetables, and the meat was usually nice. Their minimum delivery costs were not too over the top. The costs of the items were not too high, although they were usually a bit more than I pay at the butcher or fruit shop. However, if I couldn't easily do my shopping there, it was a good service.

Every order I'd ever had was good food at a reasonable price, delivered when they said they would. I was happy to be a customer, although I only used them when I needed them.

You would always pay 1.5x or 2x the price if you shopped at aussie farmers.

Not cheap for anyone that puts mild effort into grocery shopping.

      • I don't look for the cheapest items, I don't buy my fresh food and meat from supermarkets. I would rather pay the fair price for these and get better quality. I make all my food from scratch using ingredients, so my food bill is still kept relatively low compared to people who buy more pre-made items.

        • Fair point but I will point out something some people might not know

          Example prices

Woolworths: Buys Avacado for 50 cents, sells for $2
Fruit Shop: Buys Avacado for 50 cents, sells for $1.50
Expensive fruit shop/Aussie Farmers/whatever, Buys Avacado for 50 cents, sells for $4

The expensive fruit shop in some cases will buy more expensive stock, but in those cases the fruit/vegetable you buy will be completely different instead of simply being less bruised or more ripe etc.

My point here is that most of the time the original Farmers etc aren't getting anymore money, the shop has just decided to take a bigger cut.

Different shops have different quality standards, you can find many shops that fit in with your quality standards, the higher quality standards can cost more. For example a high end fruit shop will only put out perfect Avacados all with "ripe" stickers on them, so you don't have to check.

          @samfisher5986:

I was at the Vic Market yesterday and was surprised at how expensive all the fruit and vegetables there was - about the same as my fruit shop charges. So I'm wondering how much of a markup they're putting on items. I assume they'd get some discount by buying more in bulk, but really, the prices are not much different to buying direct from there for individual items.

        • @spersephone: I can't understand why people rave on about the vic market for produce. Must be a trendy thing to do.

        • @JIMB0: It's fine if you go there just before closing on a day in which they won't be open the next day.

Every time I look at fruit and vegetables in Woolworths I feel I'm paying a lot more because everything looks way to perfectly displayed.

        • @spersephone: Vic Market aren't generally cheap, as [@JIMB0] mentioned, it's has become a trendy place to shop so I imagine the stall prices probably aren't that cheap either. This aside, however, you do occasionally get good bargains in Vic Market.

In general when it comes to vegetables and fruits, the outer north and north-west markets have the best prices (at least asian vegetables, which are what I primarily buy).

  • Signed up for the trial, received far too high quantities of some things, and other stuff was just missing. Got garlic cloves that were mouldy and rotten upon delivery, and eggs that were broken (though again, they sent too many so can't complain too much as I still had as many good eggs as were ordered.)

Some recipes called for 'pantry items' that I was expected to have (one notable item was "Red Wine Vinegar" - how can you expect that everyone just has that kicking about?)

Complained and they made good, but of course I didn't use the service again. My initial impression of the service wasn't very good at all. Not overly surprised that it didn't end well for them, but that's just one person's experience.

  • +1

I have used their service and I think they are really good IMO. The boxes received were good quality no doubt.

But its way overprice. The concept appealed to people who did not know "how to cook".

Sorry to see them go though. The two boxes I received has been good throughout.

  • I'm glad I didn't end up using the Amex offer that expired on the 3rd.

A little birdie told me that Amazon might take over and use it as a customer base for Amazon Fresh

    Details to follow hopefully

  • +2

I know some of you had bad experiences with them, but they were great for me. I used quite a few 50% and 40% codes and was very happy with it. But as they as nothing lasts forever.

    • Correct me if I'm wrong but if you used multiple 40-50% off codes wouldn't that mean you either weren't a regular customer or you made new accounts?

      • Nope it was all on the same account. Guess I was fortunate at that time there were all these 40 and 50% codes.

  • used there service a few years ago and had no issues, it actually worked quite well and was worth the convenience, we all have difference values on time.

Moved to a different area and tried again and they would constantly deliver around 11pm the night before (id notice because of getting out of bed for small kids, only to find the order already on the front step, those days we were lucky as I found it), during summer, with no effective insulation, considering it was not supposed to be delivered until after 4am. After throwing out too many bottles of off milk (which they did refund tbf), I cancelled.

  • Hopefully Coles and woolies will offer some meal packs online and in store.

    • I really second this
because I really dislike the alternatives in markets Hello Fresh lite n easy etc where they give you 1 egg 1 bean and 1 bread roll 50mls Milk

I really like the model where AFD would send me produce of the week and a recipe guidance for meals
leaving an obvious natural left overs for breakfast or lunch like a real shopping visit does.

most importantly every week I knew exactly my food expense was $80
now it will fluctuate because Coles and Woolworths recipes do not declare budget ranges until you add the 20 items to your cart
and you then need to manually calculate other recipes to use the 1/2 onion capsicum left over from the first recipe.

  • I didn't like the aggressive door to door salesmen when they were setting up this company.
Looks like they ripped off the farmers in the end as goods would have been supplied on account.
Nothing for those holding a franchise and 300 out of a job.

Anyway here is a deal that has been posted -

NSW Aussie Farmers Direct Milk Stock Clearance: 1L $0.50, 2L $0.75, 3L $1 at Harris Farm Broadway

  • Did anyone have credit in their account? I had about $20.
Your grocer has emailed they have taken over AFD

    • Just the trademark, I tried to get the new service,
It's just the same your grocer service

So I couldn't get my our packed meal boxes with meal plans that I was getting from afd
