Appliances Online - Prices Misleading?

Can I pls get the communities opinion on this?

I am in the market for a fridge and found the same fridge from Appliances Online and from another competitor. The competitor had it for $899 plus $75 for delivery and Appliances online had it for $1,000 with free shipping (as they offer for all their products)

I heard they price match so I spoke to a representative to get it price matched at $899. They advised they can do so but would need to add in delivery fee of $75 also. I was confused and asked but Appliance online offers free shipping why do you need to add in the delivery fee. They simply said because it is in our policy to add in delivery fee for price matching. I went "OK", so obviously their prices are inclusive of their delivery fees which they mask and offer it as "Free shipping", the representative didn't comment.

So my question do you think Appliances is misleading the public by saying free shipping when they are obviously just including the delivery costs in their prices. (Evident from their price matching policy).

It only pricematches the price not including delivery. Fair enough?

Of course they need to factor in the competitor's delivery fee as it's the delivered price they're matching. Really no point to this thread I feel.

When I offer free shipping on ebay I factor the cost of shipping into my buy it now price. I never add free shipping if I go down the auction route on feebay.

I would like to apologise now to all of my past purchaser's that I have misled.

What's your eBay store so I can buy something and do a claim?

    He was left speechless…

  • the opposite can also be true ; competitor underquoting and then inflating the delivery cost.

I recently bought a LG fridge which was cheaper on AO than competitors inc. delivery, plus Ebay 5% was a good deal.

saying free shipping when they are obviously just including the delivery costs in their prices.

So who do you think pays for shipping, Centrelink?

There is no such thing as free shipping, it's either included in the price or it's an extra charge.

What matters is the total price you end up paying.

    • All our items are comes with free delivery. Our customers pay the same price for shipped as they do for click and collect.

      • +2

That just means you're gouging pick up customers.

        • Not at all. Free delivery takes a few business day, sometimes up to a week to be delivered by the carrier. Click and collect allows the customers to purchase the item at a competitive price and the convenience to collect the item on the day.

          @whooah1979:

If they're picking up they should be paying less as it's costing you less.

Especially with eBay as they charge FVF on shipping.

        • @Scab:

If they're picking up they should be paying less as it's costing you less.

That is a misconception. Our overhead on a b&m is higher than the overhead for warehouse staffing.

        • @whooah1979:

I'm sure you don't have a physical store just to cater to eBay customers.

        • @Scab:

          No, they click and collect.

        • @whooah1979:

But if you didn't do C&C you wouldn't close the physical store.

So it almost costs you nothing for someone to pick up, yet you slug them for shipping.

There is a huge blurb about price matching on their website… which clearly says

Price must include all costs including any shipping charges. If the advertised price is for pick-up only we reserve the right to charge a delivery service fee

Maybe learn to read before crying foul and being mislead…

30 seconds of my life down the drain…. sounds like 30 minutes for the representative from AO who was left speechless

I was confused and asked but Appliance online offers free shipping why do you need to add in the delivery fee

They will price match to the 'same' item/terms/conditions. Same as all other retailers.

So this means item + shipping, as there's includes shipping, regardless if its free or not.

so obviously their prices are inclusive of their delivery fees which they mask and offer it as "Free shipping"

You do know, there is no such thing as 'free' shipping. Shipping companies don't ship things for free. All FREE shipping is paid for by someone, somehow.

Anyhow, Nothing to see here OP, move on

  • If it was the Kelvinator/Westinghouse 540L top mount,Hardly Normal are asking $799 in their catalogue.

Have never ever been charged delivery by AO,including last years price match freezer for a neighbor.Actually the same scenario.

Having worked in the industry for manufacturer/importer of 'fridges and at the retail level,it seems there is a current overstock which normally happens in June/July.

  • The poll result is one-sided and I believe OP has already received his/her answer. Thread closed.
