Buying EFTPOS Gift Cards on Self Service Woolworths

Has anyone else found lately that unable to buy EFTPOS gift cards on Woolworths Self Service machines ?
At the very end an error loading card (before payment screen) and cannot be resolved by staff.

I was unable at 3 different woolworths stores last couple weeks I instead needed to go to the main counter to perform this purchase.

Is this unique to the EFTPOS branded cards, is it deliberate or is it a system outage?

I have to admit I haven't tried buying any other branded gift cards recently

Why are you buying gifrcards, does it save money compared to cash?

    • gifts of course,
they are the perfect gift card

      • So better than cash? I think not!

        • -1

they are better to me on my credit card rewards and interest free window that giving away straight cash and losing the time value of the cash

besides there is an archaic law that states posting cash is illegal

@carlb: strange….. Don't post cash, transfer it direct to their account on their bday for example, post the card.

        • The pun was supposed to be
          http://theperfectgiftcard.com.au

        • @carlb: No, CASH is the perfect gift card, and doesn't come with a $5.95 fee for doing it either!

  • Yes. If you use Woolworths gift cards purchased at 5% off, then you save 5% when buying giftcards and using them instead.

But these cards have a loading fee, that is greater than the 5% saved…. so…….

don't forget to factor the comfort the assurance
some people have in not giving their 'real' cc details to some faceless entity they don't trust.
of allowing their bank to know where they have been shopping

        • Cash achieves the same result.

@JIMB0: yes i'll remember that when at a cashless location or online

        • +1

@carlb: EFTPOS cards don't work online either and I can't think of any places that don't take cash.

        • @JIMB0:
I have seen a couple lounges and cafe places in brunswick that do not take cash
they don't have a till just a EFTPOS machine

I suppose if you really gave them the grilling they would have to take your cash if you really wanted to force them

You seem to be trying to create an argument for no reason other than be right in your head.

Fact is some people bought or buy EFTPOS Only1 Visa or Wish cards
and it is none of your business

        • @JIMB0:

Fact is some people bought or buy EFTPOS Only1 Visa or Wish cards

I suppose it looks less suspicious to a wife/boss to have spent funds at Woolworths rather than a more questionable establishment.

        • @JIMB0:
          Good now your thinking
And you can run a report on what the kids are using their cash less allowance on

since they can't use card on questionable Street corners of to extract cash

        • @JIMB0:
I'm not in favour of paying fees for cards, but cash is at the bottom of my list as a payment method.
Having to provide change, having to carry change around, hygiene. Cash has got to go.

This is common with most gift cards. Woolworths have been upgrading their POS system. With the new system self serve freezes when you scan a gift card. Pretty annoying to be honest.
If you still wanna buy gift cards via self serve find a store with the old system. Usually these are old and dingy stores that no one shops at.

What you meant to say, is they are upgrading the system to close the loopholes of using giftcards to buy giftcards. ;)

All old and dingy stores will be updated in time.

      • Yeah it's one of the reasons. In my opinion the biggest reason is to make returns more easier to the customer and staff and make it more difficult for crooks (In Theory)

The reason to hold back on dingy stores is cost cutting(staff training) and old registers are incompatible with the new system.

    • I've had the freezing issue in the smaller self serve machines. It takes around 3 mins (but feels like 10 mins) before it eventually moves to the payment screen.

  • Yes can't do it at self check out. Need to go to counter but no issues… Was able to buy using egiftcard

  • it does work with the new systems, however you need a staff member member on hand with the correct authority to approve your purchase. I have had it fail at a few stores with staff who do not have the correct authority

  • Interestingly, at a self serve checkout, I found that buying a Google Play card with an EFTPOS gift card isn't allowable. So… not the perfect gift card after all.

  • purchased a Netflix gift card not long ago with no issues. I always buy these when there are specials or bonus points and just apply them to my own account.

I buy a lot of giftcards at woolies

    Here is my experiences.
Old system Max $500 before staff intervention needed

New one is 10 cards or $1000

    New self serve.
Some machines. Once you press the pay button the screen to scan your woolworths card is either instant or takes up to a minute.
    Haven't worked out why?
Sometimes two machines next to each other behave differently.
Most of the time if you wait the minute and then finish transaction. And come back to it to buy more, it's instant

The activation the old system is quicker but the recipes come out slower

New machines. Self-serve. The activation receipts are about the same speed. At a registered checkout they super quick. But both take ages to start printing. So it takes longer over all.

In my experience. 90% of stores are on the new system. I've been to a few with the old. Software and they seem to be dingyer but over the past few months. Theyve been upgraded

So many places say no. Gift cards purchases at self serve because failed activation.
Of all my purchases. Maybe twice its happened to me.

Some stores insist it won't work. But I do it in front of them and it's worked eveytime. Except once or twice.

A few months ago some of the staff swipes for self serve gift cards purchases came up. With insufficient privilege and needed a supervisor
However I havent had that happened for a while now
