Woolies Wish eGift Card No Longer Can Be Converted to Physical Gift Card?

I bought a wish eGift card last week, went to my local woolies store (in NSW) to convert to a physical wish gift card. When the lady keyed in the amount and chose the payment type as egift card, the system automatically refuse me to enter the egift card number. (EFTPOS machine shows "transaction refused" when I type the first digit of egift card number)

I then tried with Metro store and same thing happened.

I'm not sure if Woolies system had issue that week or they have permanently banned the conversion.

I personally like to use the physical gift card as it will make transaction faster (rather than key in the egift card number), also able to use it in Caltex owned service station for Petrol.

Has anyone else been successfully converted the wish egift card to a physcial card recently?

Why are you asking us and not the lady who was standing right in front of you at the time?

I checked with both the check-out lady and customer service desk at the woolies, they had no clue.

You can use the egift card woolies branded carltex for fuel and other stuff.

    • true. but the closest one is a Caltex owned unfortunately.

And I also help my parents to purchase the gift card for their shopping and petrol as they don't know how to use the egift card

Answer is simple OP, here are the T&Cs for both eGift and physical giftcards

    https://everydaygiftcards.com.au/media/static/Docs/WISHGiftC…

    Point 6.5

WISH Gift Cards cannot be used towards the purchase of any Gift Cards sold through WISH Gift Card participating stores.

    • I had no problems in the last 2 years. The eGift card or physical gift card are still able to purchase any other gift card (i.e. david jones / Myer) gift card without any issue. But the system seems recently refused to convert egift card to physical gift card.

        and?

These terms are dated Jan 2018. So T&Cs change. Just because you did it before, doesn't mean you can do it now or in the future.

Looks like they closed that loophole then…only took them forever.

Hhmm i wonder if it blocked all gift cards?! That'd be the real shame!

        • @CheapskateQueen: You can thank all the ambassadors of buying gift cards with gift cards.

        • @CheapskateQueen: I used it to buy a Ticketmaster card without issue recently, bummer if this is no longer allowed.

@bluesky: buying other gift cards other than wish physical gift card is still allowed. Only wish egift card to wish physical gift card seems blocked.

        • @kroc: Technically you're not supposed to be able to buy any gift cards with gift cards.

        • @kroc: why do you need wish physical card ?

        • @bbqwer: eWish cards not accepted at Caltex petrol stations. Quicker to swipe card everywhere else, rather than entering numbers via key pad.

@John Kimble: Perhaps technically, but in practice, I do not get the feeling that buying other gift cards (e.g. Ticketmaster, Skype) using wish egift is something they are trying to discourage, at least not where I shop. I always do it openly, have been through staffed and self-checkouts. Know some of the permanent staff there, no-one even bats an eye or has mentioned anything.

This sort of tally with what kroc said, i.e. despite the fact that the new system could have cast a wider net, to block this along with the buying of physical wish card, it does not.

    • With the removal of expiry dates from gift cards there's no reason I can think of to bar buying gift cards with gift cards. Has anyone given feedback to customer service line for this issue?

Reasons for using physical gift cards in order of importance:

      1. Accepted at more petrol stations
      2. Easier for older people to use.
      3. Faster to use physical gift card.
      4. Can split up cards for others to use.

      Thanks

      • Your reasons are flawed, mostly point 2.

        1. Maybe they don't want you to do that
        2. Easier how? Older buy don't buy egiftcards to convert.
        3. Maybe, I like the coles version that you can just scan the card number. woolies should do the same.
        4. Only if you buy lots of smaller cards with one larger egiftcard.

At the end of the day, if you want to save your 5%, you now have to use egiftcards. Simple as that.

Might have something to do with the new checkout system software that Woolworths are rolling out throughout stores. It's more advanced so probably picks up on things like this.

  • If this is the case then the gift card shelf will remain full and will return to the same as Coles stores hidden in the corner about the size of r2-d2…… Stupid Woolies move (I own the company) :(

      Time to stockup now ?

  • When was this?
I bought 27x $100 JB gift card using WISH egift card. Took quite a while as 1 transaction only allows 10 gift cards but it worked. This was on Tuesday 6 Mar 18 in VIC.

Edit: oh you were talking about physical WISH gift card. Nvm.

  • It's the new checkout system. If you can find a store that doesnt have this yet, stock up.

    • +1

True.As someone mentioned above "WISH Gift Card participating stores",are not limited to Woolies only.AFAIK,all BIG W checkouts use old system.

      • Ah thanks for posting that. Now that I think about it, don't think I've seen any updated checkouts at BIG W.

        • are they going sdown as well?

RACQ Members receive a 5% discount on physical WISH Gift Cards & free Registered Post.

In my experience, cards take 6-8 business days to arrive.

  • +1

The cards where it is typically blocked are the ones where you have to choose an amount

so if you are buying gift cards that have predetermined values then it's fine, ie JBhifi $100, Flight Centre $75 etc etc

  • I just bought two $100 JB Hifi gift cards using a WISH Gift Card this morning at a Metro Woolies.

When I scanned the cards at the self-service, it flagged the attendant who told me to go to a regular checkout. The guy at the register (I'm pretty sure he was the manager) let me use the WISH card without hesitation. I just had to enter the card details via the normal EPTPOS terminal.

So it might just be the open amount cards that are causing the issue.

Just attempted to get 3x$100 Kogan Gift card using eGift card and it was rejected straight away from the terminal

    • +1

Yes, couldn't do it since last weekend.
Before last weekend, it was still OK with self checkout but not with manual checkout. Now it is completely banned. Goodbye Woolie and Wish Giftcards.

      • Goodbye Woolie and Wish Giftcards.

Are you saying this because you will no longer be purchasing them?
