Compaq CQ42-234TU $499 Good Deal?

Hi,

I'm planning on buying a laptop soon with a maximum budget of $600. My requirements are pretty basic, all I require is that it's capable for University work (Software Engineering/Business), Internet, Email, Instant Messaging, Office Applications, and that it's held within a 14" form factor.

(This notebook will be a replacement of my current 2006 Toshiba M110-JOO Core Duo T2250 with integrated GMA950)

I've come across this Compaq machine for $499 which I think fits all my needs fine but wasn't sure if there were any better ones out there (e.g. i3) that's within my $600 budget.

The spec's of the Compaq is as follows:

Processor Brand: Intel
Processor Speed (GHz): 2.30Ghz
Processor Type: Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.3Ghz T4500
Screen Screen Size: 14"
Graphics Card Memory Type: GMA4500MHD
Installed RAM (GB): 4GB DDR3
Hard Drive Size: 320GB 7200RPM
Optical Drive Format: DVD Burner (with Light-scribe)
USB Ports: 3x USB2.0
Networking: Ethernet 10/100

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Wireless Networking: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n
Video Ports: 1 x VGA, 1 x HDMI
Digital Media Cards Reader: 5 in 1 Card Reader
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Manufacturers (months): 12

Edit: Also, I'm more than happy to wait until the end of January if there will be better deals out.

  • As Intel"s Sandy Bridge is coming out early next year, you could wait and get better deals on previous models as a new line of processors are coming

  • Not really a deal. A T4500 laptop is around $499, just search on Static Ice.

For a little bit extra you could get a Core i3 laptop, like this $550 lenovo G560 but its currently sold out. But yeah, wait and see until Sandy Bridge comes.
