Worth Upgrading to an Xbox One X?

Hi OzBargain community, I'm contemplating upgrading my day 1 Xbone to the X and wanted to hear about peoples experience with the X?

Namely, was it worth upgrading? Is the performance noticeable enough to drop the $500-$600 on a new unit when the current one is still working?

I have a decent gaming PC also, my close mates have Xbone's, just as a little background.

Appreciate the help :)

  • Nah wouldn't bother - Otherwise you'll be upgrading when the X v2.0 comes out too - its never ending……..unless you want to give me your Xbox One for free then…UPGRADE!

    • mate….

I’m planning to do it myself, but will be selling my One S, Kinect, Kinect Adaptor to offset the cost as much as possible. Just waiting for the One X to drop to a sub $550 price!

Only other problem is my One S is a 2TB so the One X is a bit of a downgrade size-wise which is kinda shitty. Realistically though only ever have a few games in rotation so it’s not the worst, but not the most ideal either.

    • Same, I'm waiting for a price drop/bundle

  • If you have a good 4K tv. IMO the upgrade is worth it. You notice the difference in quaility even with the games that are not x enhanced… as fergy mentions though how often do you want to upgrade. As you have a day one xbox though why not!

Loading times etc there is some difference. Nothing major though

  • I bit the bullet recently and bought one, upgrade from original Xbox one just like you. In my opinion it is worth it, I use my Xbox fairly often and my PC is pretty average, and it was more performance for the outlay than I would have had upgrading my pc.
I think things to consider are, do you have a 4K HDR tv, do you play/own many of the games which are currently Xbox one enhanced? And that not all future games are going to be One X enhanced… more likely to be the AAA and exclusive titles, with a scattering of others.
I do notice better performance all around, especially as my old Xbox one was beginning to struggle with newer titles. And games which are 4K HDR enhanced are especially good.

  • I did in December from a ONE S and if (and only if) you have a 4k screen you plan on connecting it to, then yes it is a world of difference. I took advantage of an EB trade in deal that actually wasnt too bad for once. Basically I gave them my ONE S, 1 game (fifa 14 lol) and $349 and got a ONE X. Basically got $300 for my used ONE S.

Some games are an insane difference. Hitman, Steep, COD WW2, Rocket League are giant giant differences. The clarity is insane.

With that said it is due to drop to $550-599 so wait a few more weeks. If you can wait until June it will be $539 on sale.

If you have an original xbox one then yes upgrade, you will see an incredible difference in performance and graphics including HDR colour.

  • Depends on what you play. I am primarily a PC gamer but have mates on Xbox. We all upgraded and everyone is very satisfied. Games such as Ghost Recon Wildlands have better framerate at the same time a night and day difference in graphics fidelilty. Not only that, some games give an option to use high FPS i.e. Gears of War 4. I traded in my day 1 for $170 at EbGames which was nice. If money is not tight, upgrade. It is a really good console.

From Xbox One (2013) -> Xbox One X (2017)… worth upgrading
    From PS4 (2013) -> PS4 Pro (2016)…. not worth upgrading

Although if you don't have a console and had to choose a console today, the best choice would be the PS4 Pro.
A distant second would be the Xbox One S. And a tied-third would be the Nintendo Switch.
….that's if you can't get your fill of gaming from a Gaming PC and iOS ecosystem which are the winning combination.

That makes no sense whatsoever. How could a One S be a better choice than a One X?

I don't see the logic of getting a PS4 Pro either, unless you dig their exclusives or the half baked VR.

      • The PS4 Pro can be found on sale very often, so the price difference to the Base-PS4 isn't too high.
So the bonus performance is cheap, and fine.

The Xbox One S is also very cheap and on-sale very often.
However, the Xbox One X/Scorpio is not. It might be better, sure, but it is not better value.
Here, you really do pay a premium for the bonus performance.

Hence, a PS4 Pro is pretty much the go-to purchase if you had no console.
It performs modestly, at a good value, and has the biggest catalogue of the desirable games.
The Xbox ecosystem is weaker, so it is harder to recommend investing larger amount of money into.
        …see, logical

  • Maybe you haven't thought about this yet, but the original Xbox One isn't the most reliable thing around (as first generation releases tend to be). It might be fine for now, but you'll probably start seeing reports of them failing soon.

It happened with the 360 (to a really large degree), but it also happened with other consoles like the PS3 and PS2, where the slim models were much more reliable than the original fat models. My hunch is that you should sell the original Xbox One whilst you still can get a pretty good price for it and grab a One X. I wouldn't pay full retail for one, but at around $550, it's not a bad deal.

  • I got a PS4 never owned any Xbox thinking about getting a Xbon 1 x due to the backwards compatibility… anyone think it is worth it?

  • It depends on what type of deal you get and if you have a decent 4K/HDR TV to take advantage of it.

But short answer is yes :)

It's probably already been said but remember that (more or less) the console is really only as good as the output device that it's being connected to. If you've got a 22" TV and you're sitting three meters away from it (yeah I know it's a pretty extreme example, but bare with me) then you're not really IMO going to really notice the difference between the two. Upgrading would be a waste of money IMO.

MS is still tasking devs to ensure that games run on both platforms, but you can sometimes (though not always) enable better graphics or possibly frame rate options on the XB1X.

If you have a normal set up, similar to me, which is a 32-40" TV FHD and not UHD and you sit a few meters away then I would say IMHO you're not going to feel like you've really got your money's worth out of an XB1X, the main attraction here would be the better FR and draw distance style improvements.

If you've got a massive 4K TV that's HDR compatible and you see yourself actually implementing the better features and you're jonesing for them now, then I'd suggest that you might get your money's worth from the upgrade.

I guess if you've got money to burn, this is all irrelevant and you'll do whatever makes you happy anyway (which is absolutely fine of course) but just that, you don't need our opinions, just do what makes you happy.

Hope that helps in some way.

  • I don't have a 4k tv and probably won't for a while. The only other reason I see myself upgrading to an X is if they bring out a model with a SSD built in. I would upgrade straight away if I could get that

    • I'd like to see what pricing of such a model will be.
