NBN Install and HFC. Will I Be Waiting for Months?

Today I came home and noticed that the nbn was finally happening in my street. A bunch of subcontractors were connecting the pits out on the footpath to people's houses. One of the subcontractors said that they will be running conduit and cable from the pit to my house in the morning. He said that once it's done, nbn co will let suppliers know that I can order a service. The only thing is, I will be getting HFC and I read that nbnco are putting a hold on new hfc connections for a while. Anyone know if I would likely be able to activate a connection fairly soon after they subcontractors do their work, or would I likely be waiting for several months?

What does the NBN website say for your address?

But yes, at this stage HFC installs are on hold.

  • Don't get too hyped for HFC.

    • Unless you pay for Telstra.

    • Please explain happy with my current HFC?

It's not all bad, but in many areas people are going from 100mb Telstra/Optus HFC to <20mb NBN HFC because the NBN takes over the existing Telstra backbone, and delivers a shittier one. This caused upwards of 40,000 refunds from ISP's because they couldn't deliver the advertised 100mbs speeds.

        • Dam stuff that must be one of the lucky ones :/

      • Varies from location but, I was at a friends house and they had Telstra nbn tier 50. Tried to do a speed test and the download couldn't even make it pass 2mbps. My workplace also has Telstra Business nbn tier 50 and the max they can get is 5 - 15 mbps.

Same boat as you my friend. Long wait ahead.
Initially nbn site claimed we were due for install June 17. Had the box installed on our place a month ago, reckon we will be lucky if our area is “turned on” by Dec 18.
Wouldn’t be so bad if adsl in the area was better than 2mb/sec

    • I dream of 2mb/s, current max speed is 500kb/s not during peak

      • Haha rough as
There’s always someone worse off lol
Hopefully nbn is headed your way soon brother

        • Mine recently dropped from ~700kb/s to around ~300ks/s.

          I can hear modem noises.

(Surely these's someone worse off to cheer me up?)

        • @D C: I get about 1.5 …… MB/s

        • @cameldownunder:
          There's always one.

Perhaps this:https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/365565 is karma for this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354557 and the like.

        • @D C:
Boys while I’m normally getting 1.5-2mbs now, there was a two week stretch where I was getting 200KB/s after Christmas..does that cheer you up D C?
Telstra went and checked various pits and got it back to current, but was getting 5mb/s before Christmas so Still annoyed and confused lol

    • Same here. They connected up the box two months ago, but won't say when it will become available or even if it will be this year (2018).
I'm also pissed off about where they installed the box, which will be impossible to access from inside or under the house and is now a prominent feature of the front of the house. When I called NBN they told me that their legislation means they have "deemed consent" to cause damage to people's property unless you proactively refuse consent for your home to be connected to the NBN. The letter that NBN sent me in December simply said that if be connected sometime between January and August 2018.
At least my ADSL is delivering 15-17mbs

  • These conduits to houses are what they avoided by going with old HFC over fibre!

Sadly subject to congestion at all levels. Not as bad as FTTN, just more expensive to operate than FTTP.
And yes, there is a halt on new services (unless you are a federal minister!)

    • My cousin has had HFC for a few months. After 4 separate call outs which included replacing all the connectors on 2 occasions.
They after a lot of prompting they looked at the leadin to the house to find the insulation had worn through near where the cable came into the house up on the roof.
VISUALLY you could see the fault if you just looked. Techs just want to change connectors. Then close out the ticket ASAP to meet SLAs.

Australia is the laughing stock of the world when it comes to internet. How the hell in 2018 can you live just a few kms from a major city centre and only get 2 mbps??
