eBay Purchase - Del Fee Paid - but I Picked up from The Store as Was Offered Display - Should They Refund The Del Fee?

My dilemma. Bought item on eBay. No c&C available. Had to deliver. Was phoned and told couple of weeks for delivery but I could have the display….
Took this, went and picked up.
Told that I not entitled to delivery fee refund as was eBay purchase.
Your thoughts???
I don't think it's fair. They didn't have to pay anyone to deliver it.

why did you pick it up? you paid delivery fee.

  • Have you signed when pick up?

And they also didn't have to go out of their way to arrange you the display model.

You were obviously happy to get your item now, and were happy to drive down and get it, so just let it go.

A company sold a brand new item with delivery which, through their own error, they delayed. You think that the COMPANY is being extraordinarily generous by offering a used item that the OP has to pick up themselves for the same price?

No wonder people get walked all over by major businesses if that's how a typical consumer thinks…

      • I don't get walked over by businesses thank you, I have fought multiple businesses in the past for refunds, I am quite stubborn.

        1. A display model does not mean used, usually just removed from packaging and put on a shelf, full warranty still applies. If it had any flaws in it I imagine that the OP wouldn't of taken it.

        2. OP has not told us if the original eBay ad said there was a delay in getting items, like a pre-order or something.

        3. When offered the display model, OP could easily have said no, just cancel the order and issue a refund. Would have been simple. Seems clear to me OP preferred the display model option.

          1. A display model does mean used - plenty of used items are flawless, doesn't make them equivalent to being new. If the item was something like a TV then it most likely would have been used quite a lot.

          2. They haven't, but that sounds quite far-fetched.

          3. They could indeed have said no - what does that change?

To summarise, the retailer and the OP have come to an agreement where the OP will pick up a used version of the new item they paid for because the seller has failed to deliver it in a reasonable time. Even ignoring the fact they now have a used product not a new product, your argument is that it is unreasonable to expect the retailer to refund the delivery fee for an item which they will no longer be delivering. That is absurd - end of.

It's not something you've specifically addressed, but whether they should be compelled to give that refund is a different question - one which I will say no to precisely for the point you raised - the OP accepted this resolution.

        • @callum9999:

And the item could have been something like a toaster, which I doubt any store would have working on the shelves.

But we are both making assumptions, and since the OP has not yet replied to anything in this thread,it all seems like moot points.

If the OP feels like giving us all some more information, we could probably give more accurate advice.

        • @AdosHouse: Rather unlikely, but display toasters still get touched, moved around etc. by hundreds of people.

I really don't know why you're arguing a display model is equivalent to new - if you had the option of ex-display or new for the same price, which would you take?

Told that I not entitled to delivery fee refund as was eBay purchase.

This would need to be handled via eBay and the team that is responsible for ebay portal. The in-store employees cannot refund your delivery fee because their store wasn't the one that charged you the fee.

It might be possible to contact their online fulfilment team and ask for a refund, otherwise the secondary, but somewhat brusque option would be to open a dispute and ask for a partial refund.

  • How much was the delivery fee?

Free shipping, but as always it's the principle.

  • 😴

  • So was it free shipping?

ebay sellers can't issue partial refunds. it's either a full refund or nothing.

    • Not true! I received a partial refund just last month for an ebay purchase - via my paypal account (if it matters).

ebay doesn't allow sellers to issue partial refunds unless the buyer opens an snad dispute and asks for a partial refund.

the partial refund you received wasn't from ebay (unless it was from an snad), but from paypal.

a partial refund issued from paypal is not part of the ebay transaction. ebay gets to keep the fvf if paypal issues the a partial refunds.

      • I've had partial refunds, too.

    • You can go to paypl for prticular payment of an order and when issue refund you can refund up to full refund.

        • Why on Earth do you think anyone remotely cares about that?

        • @callum9999:

Op wants the Ebay seller to issue a partial refund for the shipping. Ebay doesn’t allow the seller to do that.

        • @whooah1979: It's completely irrelevant whether it's eBay or Paypal who allows the seller to do that - it's the same either way for the customer.

It’s not irrelevant to the seller, which is why op has been denied a partial refund.

This happened to me at the good guys. No c&c option. Paid for delivery. They called. I picked up. They said no refund on delivery. Wonder how often this happens.

  • Thanks for all the comments…..
    Additional information people enquired:

    It was a TV
Waiting for 3 weeks which not advised as delivery date when I bought it online
The delivery distance from store to home is 1.2km
Del cost $75 eBay it's $35 on non eBay website
I thought that delivered item would be coming from a warehouse and as this demo was at the store it was an option for me to collect it.
    I didn't realise they would've delivered it.
I didn't even think to ask about it nor that it'd be a problem to refund the delivery as there was no delivery!
Also I took the demo, and demos usually cheaper, which was why I was very happy to have a demo as figured I'd get back $75.
I didn't think it unreasonable to have delivery fee refunded as they didn't have to pay someone to deliver it.
Yes, their terms specify can't collect if del chosen online but it was not the case of that I just turned up at store to collected my new item in box and demand refund of delivery. Was a little complicated.
