  • Medibank tops the chart for the most customer complaints.

    • Surprised to hear that. I found their cover better than Bupa. I reckon they are the worse. Fact: I left them for Medibank after insured with them for over 25 years.

I dropped Extras not long ago. Unless you have glasses or need things very regularly, Extras are not worth it. There is a per-treatment cap, a per-category cap, lifetime cap, and even then you only get up to 60% of what falls below all the caps. Nearly impossible to work out how much you are actually going to save until you have had the treatment and look at how much the gap was.

    • I think it will be depending on the cover. My wife was with 70% and when she went to Members Choice Dentist she only needs to pay 30%. She can claim 100% on optical (glasses/lenses) without worrying any single detail.

She is with another insurer now and she can only claim contact lenses for 3 months (if she wants to buy 1 year and want to claim 100% of the limit, she has to have separate invoices). Very confusing! She is looking to move back with this deal now.

if you have the item number then you can work out how much the benefits got paid.

But I agree, if you don't have glasses / lenses or any dental work or any other thing you need to regularly do, Extras might not be worth it.

    • A lot of companies have % on what you get back (up to your limits) if you go to their members choice. For example I get 100% back up to my annual limits, so I know exactly what I'll get back. Also, many dentists (once they've seen u initially) will give you item numbers which you can use to call your insurance (or online or whatever if its available) and ask them for a quote.
While I do agree, their are situations where it's near impossible to work out what you are going to save prior to treatment, in most cases you can work it out.

Also, lifetime cap does exist, but it also depends on insurer/plan you have. For example, the only lifetime cap I've ever discovered with my time in health insurance (and also when I worked there for a while) was braces.

      It's not for everyone.

It’s insurance not prepaid health services.

You’re not supposed to be ahead after claiming on services.

  • Hey are there any private health insurance EXTRAS only with waiting periods waived? AHM used to offer it…

I've been with several companies and contrary to popular opinions, I think Medibank is the best.

Sure their premiums may be a little more than others, but they don't hide any stupid rules or fees.

I've been with some budget ones; their premiums are less but once you need to use them, that's where they get you to make up for their cheaper premiums.

I'd much rather go with a company that is upfront and to the point.

Exactly what my wife said 😂

  • Does anyone know if this is a contract for a specific time frame? I need to get 2 fillings in about a month which will cost $300, and only $120 with insurance, since it's only $11.50 a fortnight if I could cancel it after my claim It'd save me a decent amount.

    • you can cancel at anytime

  • I used to work for medibank a few years ago, if you rang up and asked nicely they would wave the 2 + 6 months wait without apply too much pressure.

I haven't checked the box below as I used to work for them but don't anymore, either way I have declared my interest.
