Reliable Option to Sell Large Amount of Furniture

Hey guys,

My parents are moving away and are looking to sell majority of their furniture. Over the years they have been furnishing the place with leather sofas, marble coffee tables and office desks etc. I am talking about approximately 20 large pieces of furniture that needs to go.

Yes, I am not expecting to gain back even half the RRP that was bought, I'm just happy to pocket some extra cash.

I've never tried selling anything online other than here so I'm kinda out in the dark. I know of Gumtree but am skeptical with the stories of low-ball fake offers and strangers coming in my elderly parents home to inspect.

Is there any other options?

Furniture is an uncountable noun. Much like water. Therefore, it is very likely you have seen the plural of furniture before, just not with the -s suffix attached to it, as the OP has done.

You can count furniture (or any uncountable noun) using partitives, e.g a piece of furniture, a glass of water etc. However, as you'll notice, we're not actually counting furniture or water but rather the piece or glass. Furniture and water remain in an unaltered form (i.e. no -s suffix).

Coffee is an odd and recent anomoly.. Technically it should be two cups of coffee. However, often we say two coffees. Over time this has stuck and we've almost forgotten that coffee is uncountable and we rarely use it's partitive.

        • "Cutting out cups of coffee" is in the lyrics of Too Low For Zero.

Who would contemplate or do such a thing…

The whole less coffee (rather than more coffee) just seems wrong.

        • Ya wanna have a crack at computer mices?

        • @D C: but this is different as mouse has a different plural form and therefore does not take an -s suffix or a partitive. E.g one mouse, two mice etc. Whether it is the animal or a piece of technology is irrelevant.

What's happening with the old house? If they sold it, you could ask the purchasers if they'd like some of the furniture for a small price. Saves you moving it out and saves them moving it in

    • This, with the house I bought last year I liked the tenant's taste so much I asked if I could buy their furniture. I probably ended up paying at least 50% more than they would have got selling it piece by piece but much cheaper than buying new and didn't have to go through the hassle of choosing stuff, getting it delivered, having to sit on the floor in the meantime, etc (previous rented house all my furniture came from what I found on the side of the road with a trailer I rented for the afternoon, so most of it went to the tip…)
Definitely offer the buyer to buy the furniture. Even if you don't get a lot for it, it's probably worth saving the hassle of people coming individually and then also having to make a tip/second hand store run of the remainder.

  • Maybe you can ask a second hand furniture store to see if theyd take it off your hands. They'd want a cheap price though so they can on sell and make a profit

  • Gumtree is not that bad if you set reasonable prices, give good photos and explain clearly that the prices are non-negotiable otherwise approach an auction house if the furniture is valuable and they will take care of it for you for a fee.

when a person is coming to pick up the furniture, move it to the garage or to a room next to the front door beforehand. If they try to lowball you on the day tell them to get f-ed. I've bought and sold quite a bit of furniture on gumtree during my rental years and never had a problem.

  • there is alot of facebook groups that buy and sell 2nd hand items, maybe look there.

Salvos. No cash return but very little hassle and they can often collect.

  • I find there is little re sale value in furniture. If you are in a large apartment block you have more chance as people can move in and buy stuff in the same location and shift it themselves.

  • Where are you located? Being in the storage industry, I'd most likely have someone to recommend if you're within Melbourne.

    • I’m situated at Sydney, thanks anyway.
