they have a cheaper brand (choceur) which I'm not a fan off.
But IMO this is good chocolate, with good cocoa and cocoa butter. (Not using palm oil etc.)

I'm with you. It's very nice, I rate it better then Lindt too (but not Haigh's)

        Their choceur is awful.

        • My favourite is Godiva to be honest

Nice price drop. I wish they wouldn't wrap in such large chunks of 25g though.

I was looking in Aldi for the chocolate with the least sugar, and the 85% version of this stuff was it. Tastes a fair bit like what I imagine ashtray tastes like. Pretty standard for high cocoa chocolate. I'm gradually acquiring the taste. I'll move onto beer mats next.

    • Sun flower seeds release the same chemicals in the brain as chocolate.

      • An got the same calories density :-)

I recommend trying Lindt Smooth Dark (I think it's called that…)

It's 70% dark, but it's not that sugary - they use vanilla extract or something I believe to bring down the bitterness. Really good stuff if you have a sweet tooth but want to avoid milk chocolate etc. Usually on sale at Coles/Woolies.

I'll have a look, thanks. I don't eat much chocolate, its more of a treat every couple of days, and this looked good while I ratchet down my sugar intake.

        • No worries! Let me know how you go. I know a lot of vegans who eat it bc it's the 'milkiest' mainstream dairy-free chocolate (read: low-ish sugar). I love it too.

That's what I like about the orange & almond Moser Roth the candi orange flecks give that nice sweetness along side the bitter cocca.

      • actually they use dutching to reduce the bitterness.. its a chemical that they add that kills all the antioxidants and good stuff in the chocolate but makes it taste better… so its worthless. the ONLY lindt bar that dosent do that is 85%.

        • Okay so I'm sure you mean well but that is not listed on the ingredients. I have the packet right in front of me and it contains:

Cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, and vanilla.

Besides, if you're eating chocolate for the antioxidants you're probably barking up the wrong tree anyway.

        • @jrowls:
australia dosent have to list dutching on their chocolate. but other countries do. it lists it on the same bars in other countries. if u had any idea how extremely good for u pure not processed chocolate is. you would be barking up this tree also. its superfood sprulina chlorella territory.

        • @ego2spare:

Yeah I start to worry as soon as anyone mentions the term superfood…

        • @jrowls:
i really worry about people who worry about that.

          @ego2spare:

Thank you very much for that information. I know they can leave certain ingredients off a label but I didn't know anything about dutching.

I'm a fan of their 85% too. Very smooth and I don't find it bitter at all compared to a lot of other dark chocolate products

    • What's the percentage of cocoa in beer mats? :)

      • Depends on whether they are drinking chocolate beer.

    • i really likes the lindt 90% stuff with 6g sugar. everything else seems to have a lot more sugar in it.

I’ve been buying this dark chocolate from Aldi for years, they raised the price to 2:70 months ago for a few weeks and have been advertising it as on special ever since.

There is on a few things I buy from Aldi and this is one of them.

      Username checks out.

  • Like Whittaker's dark choc 72% cocoa.

  • How does this compare to the $5-6 a kilo dark cooking chocolate from coles and Woolworths?

    • moser roth is much better.

Woolworths Homebrand Dark Cooking Chocolate Compound Chocolate. ($5.70/kg)
Sugar, Vegetable Fat (Palm, Shea), Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder (15%), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin). Natural Flavour (Vanilla).

^^ that sounds gross .. it isn't real chocolate

      • +1

Is it $14 a kilo extra better? Because if it is.. Ok.. that's 3x volume per $ a kilo

        • woolworths homebrand dark cooking compound chocolate isn't real chocolate. you can't really compare them. it's like comparing the price of surimi imitation crab ($6/kg at woolies) with the price of king crab ($184/kg at woolies).

if you buy the more expensive dark cooking chocolate at woolworths (select), it is 50% real chocolate (the rest is mostly sugar), but it's $12.50/kg, so you're paying $12.50 for 500 grams of actual chocolate or $25/kg.

moser roth dark goes up to 85% real chocolate for $19.92/kg, so you're paying $19.92 for 850 grams of actual chocolate or $23.44/kg.

there's nothing wrong with using compound chocolate if you are happy with the taste/results, but you can't really do a price comparison with the real thing.
