The Good Guys Sale - items not in stock

Bought a Hisense 55N6 from goodguys ebay 20% off sale - ordered Friday with delivery.

Got an email on the weekend that they had no stock and was on backorder (money was taken on checkout).

Called them today as I needed it for a gift, cant say when it will be in but will refund and can take another week for funds to show up.

I questioned them about taking money for something they dont have in stock but the 'system' caused the issue as I ordered the same time as someone who took the last one.

Obviously a lie as the listing is still here with estimated delivery of a few days:

  • I had the same thing with an aircon unit before Christmas. They were good about it, asked me if I wanted to swap for something in stock but I chose to wait as the sale was over so I didn't want to pay full price. They said I could cancel the order at any time if I wanted to.

Honestly, plenty of retailers don't have 100% accurate stock systems (actually do any?), and most online systems don't have a 'charge when we get stock' option. Some places won't even order stock until they have a confirmed payment.

This sucks but it's not terribly uncommon.

In this case, it would probably be advantageous to you to pay ahead of them getting stock, at least if you didn't have an urgent deadline. If they waited until they had stock, the sale would be over and you'd pay more. Since the sale is probably funded a little by eBay they may not be able to offer that price outside of the sale.

The delivery estimate is not calculated by the seller, rather EBay and is based on the sellers handling time (part of the listing data) and the AusPost delivery time.

It was EBAY that took your money, not the Good Guys.

Anyhow, you're being a little petty. They offered to refund if you can't wait.

Stock systems are never 100%, huge sales can see a spike of orders that overshoot the stock on hand.

Stock is being used by walkins, GG online store and the GG ebay store. So can get used up pretty fast.

The seller can cancel a bin at any time before shipping the item. You should accept their offer for a refund.

  • If you trust them to actually deliver you could get a full price one, give it as the present, then when the discounted one arrives return it for a full-priced refund.
