If you could upgrade from Samsung Galaxy S8+ to S9+ for $400, would you?

With the Allphones PRINT/PREWINTER deal on eBay and a TRS refund the S9+ comes in at about $1100. I can also get around $700 for my S8+ on Gumtree (roughly). Which means it'll cost me about $400 for the upgrade. I am on the fence about whether it's worth it. I know there is the trade in option with Samsung and a charger and Qantas etc etc but that's all stuff I don't need and won't use.

What does everyone think? $400 for an evolutionary upgrade that'll last me a year or patiently stick it out until the S10+/or wait until the end price drops. The issue there is I won't be overseas again until end of 2018 so TRS stops being an option…

Uggh. It's all too hard. I might just go with a Nokia 3310 and be done with it.

    • Haha. Enjoyed the video. See comment below though! I'd say I'm an optimist, but not a dreamer!

Please tell me you have seen the movie?

          I haven't….:/

        • @sutiive: So sad…… Then that explains why it went over your head :(

        • @JimmyF: jousting sticks

        • @JimmyF: assimilation takes time or in many cases not at all.

        • @JimmyF: Yeah I think it did. It's OK though. I can't know every meme on the internet, as much as I try.

    If you have an s8/s8+ I don't think you'd survive on a 3310 lol.

  • +1

I highly doubt you can sell a used s8 plus now for $700.

    • +1

You might be right but I'm fairly good at selling old stuff! I keep my phone in perfect condition with all unused accessories, a few decent cases, original box, receipts etc. You'd be surprised what people who are not as savvy as the average ozbargainer will pay! If I do get $700 I will be back here to tell you (and also happy to admit defeat if I don't!)

Anyway, for the purposes of this thread, assume I get my $700….

I wouldn't do it but then I wouldn't spend a grand on a phone when $150 gets me 90% of what that device does. But even if I did spend a grand I wouldn't buy a device
made by an ad company with the aim of taking more of my money.

Well that's the difference between someone who's just looking for a deal vs someone who is looking for a deal but on the latest and greatest ;) Your comment would go down well with my Dad. He'd happily buy you a beer….during happy hour, in the cheapest bar in town ….with a coupon….

The S8/S9 is made by SAMSUNG, which is a consumer electronics giant and not well known for its ad network. It runs android OS, which is developed by Google, but is modified by Samsung before it reaches your device.

I've used both an s8+ and an s9..

Difference is minimal. Both great phones. Its the same as upgrading from an iPhone # to an iPhone #s.. Just comes with some extra stuff that you'll barely use anyway.

  • +1

Yeah not much different keep that 400 you get alot of small gadgets with that money for months.

Do not buy newly released products! Now is the time to buy s8. Keep it and upgrade to do next year when there is S10 on the store. Be smart.

  • Screw it I did it. I've got a few old gadgets I can sell that will cover most of the $400 and negate that "What did I just do?" moment I'll have at about 3am this morning.

  • Not worth it. I'm a tech geek and was in the rat race of being bedazzled by new phones every year and upgrading. now looking back, it's such a waste of money. Two years per phone is good for me. Plus, from Samsung s8 to s9 is barely a difference. wait till the s10 - they'll probably pull some new shit coz it's 10 year anniversary of the s line of phones.

    To be honest, no.
But then again, it all depends on what you want from your device.

There hasn't been that much improvement in Galaxy S's over the late years.
    S6: $300, 5/10 camera, 6/10 battery life, 5/10 CPU, 5/10 GPU, 2/10 No-IP, Exynos Glass Design 16:9
    S7: $350, 7/10 camera, 7/10 battery life, 7/10 CPU, 6/10 GPU, 7/10 IP68, Exynos Glass Design 16:9
    S8: $600, 7/10 camera, 7/10 battery life, 7/10 CPU, 8/10 GPU, 8/10 IP68, QSD Glass Design 20:9
    S9: $999, 8/10 camera, 8/10 battery life, 9/10 CPU, 8/10 GPU, 8/10 IP68, Exynos Glass Design 20:9

If you've got an old S6, I would say upgrade and skip all the way to the S9 Plus.
The S9 Plus has a more usable screen size, and the battery life is decent for 2 days, over the standard S9. And you'll be on the latest software level too. Maybe wait to get it for $900 deal or cheaper, or subsidised in a contract. If your current device is newer than S6, like the S7, than the small upgrades won't feel worth the price. I guess "the deal" at this point would be the Samsung S7 Edge.

    bonus:
I have a similar advice for people on the opposite side of the ecosystem wars, on iOS.
    6 Plus: $400,_ 4/10 camera, 7/10 battery life, 7/10 CPU, 5/10 GPU, 1/10 No-IP, Weak Metal Design 16:9
    6S Plus: $450, 5/10 camera, 8/10 battery life, 7/10 CPU, 6/10 GPU, 1/10 No-IP, Strong Metal Design 16:9
    7 Plus: $700,_ 7/10 camera, 7/10 battery life, 9/10 CPU, 7/10 GPU, 7/10 IP67, Strong Metal Design 16:9
    8 Plus: $1100, 8/10 camera, 8/10 battery life, 10/10 CPU, 8/10 GPU, 7/10 IP67, Fragile Glass Design 16:9

Just like above, if you've got an old iPhone 6 Plus, upgrading to the iPhone 8 Plus would be good.
But coming from an iPhone 6S Plus, its a mixup, as battery life and overall performance is quite the same. You would be only getting a better camera, and waterproofing, while sacrificing the aux port. So the small upgrades might be worth it, but its steep markup in price. I guess "the deal" at this point would be the iPhone 7 Plus.

    • Thanks for the reply. Definitely more value for others in upgrading than for me. Nevertheless I've gone ahead and done it anyway!

What i would be asking myself, is would i be prepared to pay $400 each year for the new model, if the answer is yes, then go for it.

    • I think that's how I worked it out in the end. I hate not getting value for money but with phones I think as long as it's not too much then I'm happy to take the risk and drop $500 a year or so on a new model. Even if it's an incremental upgrade it's nice to have. Especially the different camera set up (whether it's better or not doesn't seem to have been agreed upon yet but it's still something new!).

  • From the look of the Samsung ad which I have now seen hundreds of times at SBS on demand it seems that the target market for S9s is 14-15 year olds.

    • +1

I am flattered to be associated with such a youthful and energetic age group.

  • as a s8+ owner myself, s9 is not a major design change not good enough to upgrade for me

rather wait for note 9 or s10
