How Many Times Can You Ask for a Sample of Ice Cream before You Have to Commit to Buying a Scoop

Today I tried 3 different flavors. Girlfriend was kinda meh about them but I felt too ashamed to walk away so I committed to buying a scoop. The gelato ended up being so-so. Was thinking how far have you pushed the limit of tasting flavors at the local ice creamery/gelato. Is it wrong to try several flavours and then walk away. If you were the business owner would you be upset?

When you scrape the bottom of the barrel.

For posts like these, the barrel is endless.

What did the gelato place say when you asked them.

Do we really need posts on 'how far have you gone to test the limits of hospitality and customer service?'

As someone who used to work in a gelato store for a part time job, I didn't really care about customers asking for lots of samples , but if the customer was obviously there to waste my time and not buy anything in the end (or worse, holding up the line where there are screaming kids and very upset parents), I will just scrape the 'stale' gelato on the sides of the container and/ or give you the partially melted stuff.

Doesn't worry me so long as it's free!

Could I try the ones at the front and back please?

Depends on the place but you should be allowed to ask as many as you want.
If you are legitimately trying to find a flavour you like then there should be no reason to refuse.

and I bet you try them all and say, I'm good and walk away?

You were abusing your sampling privilege, 1 sample or 2 sample at the most!

  • If you can acquire a "sample" cup at a Froyo store you can reuse it to sample as much as you like of every flavour. And if you're dextrous at swirling the stream, you can walk out with about 300 g stacked on top of the cup.

  • Anyone samples Slurpees at 7 Eleven when you cant make up your mind which flavour to get?

    • Normally when I go there all the flavours except 1 are either out of order or "been slurped dry!"
Glad you have so much choice.

  • I would be more concerned about the amount of waste you’re producing from all the little plastic spoons
I would fine both you and the ice cream shop for messing with our planet.

How many do you think is a fair thing if you owned the
    Gelato store?

    • Zero, but charge for an ice cream paddle with all the flavours on it.

  • Until They have no more wooden or plastic sampling sticks

If it's not busy and you're actually going to buy, many staff don't care if you try them all. If it's busy, max 2.

Do you feel bad each time you don't buy a car after test driving it? Or do you own a bunch of cars you don't really like?

  • How thick is your skin?

Is it wrong to try several flavours and then walk away

Once you try a 'sample' you're commited to buy.

  • Just don't be a sample abuser!
