MyRepublic Unlimited Plan Becoming $$$ Any ISP Recommendations?

MyRepublic just sent me this:

"When we entered the market it was our declared mission to offer the fastest speeds at the lowest prices and we hope that you benefitted greatly from this. However, we could only do this with the anticipation that the wholesale price of the nbn™ 100 speed tier will be reduced by the end of 2017. We regret to inform that nbn™ instead decided to champion the 50 speed tier. As a result, it has become necessary to adjust our pricing.

The nbn™ 100 plan will now cost $84.99 for new sign-ups. As a valued customer, we want to offer you this service for the special price of $79.99.
At the same time, we are introducing a new plan, the nbn™ 50 speed tier for $69.99."

Time to leave MyRepublic… any recommendations for another NBN provider? Don't mind paying that sort of money if it's going to be a good service, but MyRepublic's utterly atrocious billing and technical support was only tolerable because it was the cheapest. I'm in Brisbane if that changes anything, and on HFC. Don't need any fancy bells and whistles and a data cap wouldn't really bother me.

  • mungi telecube .. buzztelco, ohh waiit..

    • Oh man.. the comments on here about Buzztelco. enough to scare me away for life.

  • telecube if you asked a few days ago. wait for their next free setup. or pay the $49. they seem to be best bang fa buck.
haven't tried buzz. mildly keen tho

  • How much where they charging you a month?
Im on the $69.99 a month game pro and didn't receive this email.

    • +3

I was on the original $59.99 100mbps unlimited plan, this is a 41% price hike…!

      • yeah its insane.
im fine going down to 50/20 for $70pm but if i have to pay yet another $10 for static IP ill 100% be leaving.
I Game/run a plex server so CGNAt on standard plans is a no go for me since people wont be able to connect to me in some games and my plex server.

Theres some great options out there but not as good as $60/70 for 100/40

      • Really? I am paying $59.99….. I have not had any emails though. I am a few days past my 1-year contract. That would totally suck.

        • I just got the price hike email, so what to do.. obviously leave MR but to whom and on what plan.

Has anybody gone down from a 100 to a 50 plan, is there any practical difference?

Also what is peek time like on Telecube.

      • Same here - obscene price jump. What are they thinking?

  • Once Myrepublic raised their pricing, time to leave. I still have a sour taste in my mouth from the terrible speeds they were getting from Optus months ago!

    • That's ADSL? NBN is a different ballgame. Poor ADSL speeds are more than likely poor copper quality.

      • Usually translates re: faults

  • I'm with myrepublic as well and I'm on the 100 speed tier with unlimited local and national calls for $69.99 month. I never received any email advising me of a price rise. If they did this to me so early in my contract I would basically disconnect and change providers. And you're absolutely right the customer service and technical support are average to mediocre at best and that's being generous.

I's only impacting customers who are off their 12 months contract. Expect yours to go up when your 12 months is up.

    • +2

My 12 month contract ran out on Jan 20th, I received this e-mail yesterday.

Was on $59.99 for 100mbps, they moving me to the $69.99 plan for 50mbps. So… $10/m more for less. Not happy, but moving soon, will probably just suck it up for a couple of months.

I recently joined Mungi along with 2 other family members. In all cases the customer service has been nothing short of excellent. In my own case a line fault was solved that I had lived with for 6 months and a previous Telco was not interested in fixing. You talk to an Australian call centre in Melbourne. Mungi restored my faith that the NBN can actually work and faults can be rectified. I am on the NBN 50 plan and now receive 46 Mbps down and 17 mbps up from a node connection. A very happy Mungi customer.

  • Exetel have a reasonable deal on their nbn50 deal at the moment.
    Unlimited data, $60 month.
For those of us stuck on FTTN, it's probably the best speed/value option from Exetel.

    • Minimum 12 month contract
      No thanks

    • For us outside capital cities they also charge a premium on their NBN plans. Not sure of the logic, but it didn't happen when I was on their ADSL plans a few years back.

Just checked my address, they want $79.99/m for the same 50mbps/unlimited plan for 12 or 18 months.

  • Hey tromboc,

I was also with MyRepublic, but left them in contract before they raised their prices due to an unresolved TIO complaint. It was the best decision I ever made.

If you like PM me and I can refer you to my ISP and you'll get your first month free to trial them out. If your not satisfied then left before the next month and you wont pay a cent.

I tried pm you but it said your not accepting new PM's

  • I am on Buzztelco and get 40-46mbps up and 12-20mbps down. Great for the price!

Half the speed with a price increase? It looks like My Republic has given up on Australia and its NBN.

    • It was never sustainable. My republic pricing was always almost by definition not profitable.

Most ISPs have been cheating on the price. Keeping the pre NBN pricing despite the cost going up. The result has been congestion as more people join.

Suggest you try Aussie broadband. Well priced. Good service and you get the speed you pay for. Currently a double data special via Whirlpool. Also M2M contract.

  • Before getting myrepublic I was with skymesh and after an year with myrepublic I am happily back with skymesh. Can't beat the performance of skymesh atleast that's what I found out. Ping is lowest for skymesh, 3 ms compared to my republic's consistent 30ms not to mention their ultra sluggish 1Mbps at peak hours! Skymesh also happily matches competitor plans and go beyond by waiving off connection fee etc. If it was applicable in matched plan. Check them out.

    • Telecube? I don't they'd price match

  • I cant believe ppl are on My Republic. Abominal on customer service. Fortunately didnt even get onto their service as it was a debacle for them to even get me connected. Cancelled after waiting 3 weeks. Went to Aussie Broadband. Not an Ozbargain , but at least reliable and the best customer experience we have had.

    • After just switching from MyRepublic to Telecube, my connection is now considerably worse. ping times have jumped from 4-6ms with MyR to 30-40ms……. Not impressed. Will give them a month just in case it's random and switch to someone else, 40ms at 11.20pm is BS.

  • Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm now with Telecube on their 500gb plan for $65/mth with no setup fee (refunded). Speeds are similar to what I had ~95/35 however ping times are atrocious, jumped from 4-6ms with MyRepublic to 30-40ms… We'll see how long this provider lasts…. Again thanks for the help.

    • Did you manage to reuse your MyRepublic router?

Edit: NVM, you're not on VDSL. Trying to work out whether my modem is reusable.

      • Non VDSL only require a router

  • I am currently with MyRepublic.

To be fair to them, I haven't had any of the problems that typically form the majority of complaints against them. I've never had a billing issue or bad tech support etc, I've had a couple of days with slow speeds but I lived with it and all was okay.

However this new pricing email came along and I freaked out… I was used to paying $60 per month for unlimited 100/40 NBN, and like anything addictive, you can't go back to your old ways after experiencing fast speeds. The $20 per month hike in price was too much to bear though, so I started looking for an alternative.

Lo and behold, this morning, Telecube came out with this offer, and I didn't hesitate signing up.

Now just wondering what to do with MyRepublic, I don't know about keeping the modem and how the switchover will happen.

    • FWIW, I switched immediately and the plans were better off than they are now. They have clearly reacted to MyR ending their plans and have hiked the price. I'm paying $65 for 500gb 100/40

      • I agree. My plan is $70 for 500gb 100/40, so whilst it's $5 more expensive than the previous offer they came out with, I'm happy to pay it as I've heard good things about them.
Real shame about MyR though, I really did like them and wanted to support them, but $20 every single month, over a year that's $240 and it's un-OzB to pay that much extra. They did well for me so I'm sad to let them go.

I got the email from MyR today, and just signed up for the Telecube deal. I am not impressed with MyR; I paid an early exit fee to Exetel to be able to take up the $60/month deal while it was on, only to then be shafted like this.

I hope the MyR modem will be able to be reused. It does appear like it (the "setup wizard" lets me change connection type to PPPoE and enter a username/password, which is what telecube seems to use).

        • @Make it so: Do you know if Telecube communicates with MyR that we've switched, or do we need to call up to cancel?

        • +1

@MathNerd: nope…. But will find out soon :)

      • Are you on FTTN? I'm wondering if I can use MR's modem for Telecube's FTTN service.

        • HFC, remember though that the "modem" is installed by NBN and is permanent. The "router" which MyR provided can possibly be reused (provided they let you configure another providers login information) but is a POS anyway. When I switched from MyR to Telecube, I simply changed the username and password in my third party router (which talks to the NBN modem) and I was connected.

        • Just for info:

My MyRepublic modem works fine with Telecube using PPPoE.

Ping went from 70ms to 8ms.
Download speed >90% of my FttN connection speed.

        • @Make it so: Thanks, will have a look on the PPPoE setting. I'm using MR's modem in bridge mode so I need to set it on my router instead. But good to hear that the ping went down. I initially had <10ms with MR but has since gone up to 30-40ms now.

  • Did anyone have trouble cancelling MyRepublic? I phoned those people on 12 April. First spent 10 minutes on hold waiting, then spent another 10 minutes on hold while they supposedly processed my cancellation. They said "someone will call you tomorrow to confirm it is cancelled". I remember thinking "Why? Surely you can just do what I ask?".

3 days later, no phone call. So I went on chat, and they said "we can see the note on the account that you have requested cancellation. Don't worry, it will be cancelled". Yesterday, 23 April, I receive an invoice for the next billing period.

    How did your cancellations go?

    • I had the same push back so I just waited and said I'd keep calling and blocking up their phone lines until they just clicked whatever button they needed to. Probably not the best way to handle the problem but 10-15min later it was cancelled.

      • I feel like changing the credit card number to a fake one, but that would be illegal. Some more, they emailed back, wrongly stating the invoice was for the previous period, even though the dates are for the next month. Unbelievable.
