We like the screen size and that's the only criteria for next laptop.
Budget is $1000-$1500
Used for Web browsing, emails, music, movies, but not used for games.

Fair point, that's why I posted specs. for the ACER so ozbargain could see our starting point when we purchased 5 years ago.

I don't really think much of Acer's consumer products though, try to avoid them if possible and spring for Lenovo E, T, X or L series.
or Dell Latitude 5000, 7000 series. You can find refurb Dells on the Dell Outlet.

I am irked by "the family" needs a new laptop. In this day and age, each member needs their own device, especially the school aged ones, it's not a luxury, it's needed to be able to have the same advantage as the rest of the human race.
Lol an interesting read, but I can have my own device and then a 'family' laptop also. In practice, that laptop is most likely one of the parents in a communal area.
eg kid needs ipad for school but can also access a pc/laptop when they want or need it.

"The family" is Mum, Dad and 3 grown up children who use their smartphones for the majority of their needs. Occasionally they need a laptop. MOTH and WOTH use the laptop for news stories, emails and movies,
But we don't use it a lot. So that's why one laptop is needed for one family.
Buying a laptop for your whole family is *ucking weird. It's a personal device.
The Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is well within your budget and should easily perform the tasks you have listed. Tbh laptops less than half the price of your budget can perform these tasks, but at times you will be compromising with the screen resolution.
