$100 price drop on this laptop, that was on sale 2 months ago. Yes it's an Acer. Yes it's grey import from US. Yes it's relatively heavy at 2kg. But a good bang for the buck kinda of laptop.

  • 15.6" Full HD / 1920x1080 (TN panel from Amazon reviews)
  • Intel Core i7-8550U
  • 8GB DDR4 memory
  • 256GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2GB
  • Up to 7 hours battery life

Currently $699.99 + $24.43 shipping to Australia = $724.42 delivered, or AUD $921.59 according to Mastercard's currency converter today.

  • Better specs than the never-under-$1000 Xiaomi Pro, just lesser build quality and what looks like a much worse screen.

Pretty great work machine for the price, and the chance at Amazon actually honouring the warranty.

  • Not a bad deal but wish I could get similar specs/price in 13.3" or 14" because I find 15.6" just too big for train commuting.

  • If only there is an option to upgrade to 16GB memory.

    • +3

From this image it looks like the panel to replace the memory can be opened. There are some Aspire 5 models with 16GB — not surprised if it can be easily upgraded.

  • Hey Scotty, you seem to be knowledgeable about laptops. I know the Ozbargain team prefers Thinkpads - me too, I sold my T560 thinking of getting the T580 but the price is too dear right now ($2.5k specced up).

This laptop has great specs and battery is reasonably good, but I am not too sure of the Acer brand. Just wondering what you think of the HP ENVY X360 (i7 16GB version about $1450) - so it's $500 extra and has a touch screen, you reckon it is worth the investment?

Unfortunately my view of HP still sits at "fancy unreliable machines". EliteBook is comparable to ThinkPad T-series, but these days for my own usage I'll probably still only going to buy ThinkPad T/P/X series or Latitude 5000/7000 series.

      • Thanks Scotty. For the $1.4k price range I can get the T570 with the current eBay code, but the whole point of selling my Thinkpad was to upgrade to 8th gen.

HP. Hopeless Products. Laptops, printers, tablets… I've never owned an HP device, but I've fixed lots of them over the years. Places I work at seem to like them for some reason. I've owned Acers, Asus, Toshiba and Dell laptops, and of all of those, Acer laptops have lasted the longest.

You get what you pay for though. I buy laptops that cost around $700 to $1000. Not top of the line stuff. But in that price range, I've personally found Acer to be pretty good.

        • Thanks for sharing. In the price range you quoted, it must be in USD? What do you think of this specific Acer model?

        • @sky blu: Nope. $AUD. I'm quite tight, so I try to get what I can and try to not exceed my budget. So this definitely falls into that category.

          Here's a lower-end one from JB: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/acer/aceā€¦

Slower CPU, lower res display, etc. You get what you pay for. This is what we have at work… or something veeeeeeery similar.

One thing to note with this one is the placement of the touchpad. It's off to the left, and your palm touches it, moving the cursor around the screen. That is a little annoying. I personally disable the touchpad (there's a shortcut on the keyboard), and use a mouse. It's not a touchscreen, which is a bummer. I like touchscreen laptops.

        • @flaminglemon:

          I'm quite tight.

Welcome to Ozbargain, you'll fit right in!

  • I would guess anything bought from amazon is not qualified for Tax Refund since the seller is overseas ?

    • Tax refund as in GST? Since your don't pay GST when it's imported you can't claim the tax back when you travel aboard.

  • how does a grey import warranty actually work in practice?

    • +2

Amazon handles the warranty. Anything goes wrong you'll have to go back to Amazon US. They are generally good with warranty issues, but posting the dead machine back to US can be costly.
