    FYI

The Ryzen 5 4650U has Intel equivalents in the Core i5-1135G7 and i7-1165G7, with the 4650U generally performing better in multi-threaded tasks but having slower single-thread performance.
Intel's 11th gen integrated graphics (Iris Xe) generally outperform the integrated graphics in the Ryzen 5 4650U, especially models like the Iris Xe with 80 or 96 EUs. However, the Ryzen 5 4650U often has a more powerful or comparable CPU performance in multi-threaded workloads and has the advantage of being more power-efficient. The best choice depends on your priority: raw integrated graphics performance or CPU power and efficiency.

    • Appreciate you writing this up as I've been thinking about getting one of the Thinkpad T-Series for a while but not sure if any of the older models are worth it. Sounds like I'd be better to hold off in this case

First time I ever had to return an ebay purchase was from your Ebay Store.

Item listed as Very Good - Refurbished

The screen has deep and extensive scratches clearly caused by the keyboard, it looks like the entire keyboard has been etched into the display.

Care to explain the "Max Direct is committed to providing high-quality, reliable refurbished laptops and desktops with excellent customer service.

Hi, we’re really sorry to hear about your experience.

It sounds like your unit may have slipped through quality control, and we sincerely apologies for that. Please rest assured we’ll make it right — you’re fully covered under our 12-month warranty and return policy. If you haven’t already, please message us on eBay and we’ll arrange either a replacement or a full refund.
      Thank you
      Kind regards,

Taking photos of each individual item would be the obvious solution, like cashconverters.com.au or homeclearance.com.au do. I'd buy a lot more refurbed stuff if I could see the condition of the product I'm actually buying, otherwise it needs to be a really good price for me to take the chance.

        • Appreciate the feedback! We’re working on improving our listings with more detailed and consistent product photos.
          Thank you

        • +3

curious how anyone can take individual photos and put 50 items up for sale? if they added 50 photos to their listing, wouldn't it piss more people if everyone picked the 28th laptop in the photo because it looked the best? If they offered you free returns, I think this is the best compromise in lieu of you going in somewhere and looking through the lot.

          • +3

@nerd1: Seperate listings, or a dropdown box with each photo labelled (e.g. A, B, C), like you see done with listings that offer different sizes or colours. Both can work, but I was going to write in my original post that eBay isn't necessarily the most accomodating platform for this, but there's always options.

This seems to be a widespread issue with the used PC business. Most of the time you get what was promised, but exceptions are not rare.

The claims of thorough checking are exaggerated. Not just with MaxDirect. It is really up to the buyer to check the goods, and be prepared to return it if necessary. Just something to take into account.

      • +7

The cost of labour to test fix and clean is more expensive than to fully refund few unlucky customers. So yeah its just business mindset.

    • +8

I've noticed most refurb stores have rating from 'good' to 'very good' to 'great' to 'excellent'. There is never a 'poor' or 'shitty' quality, so you just have to assume anything in 'good' or 'very good' is in that range instead

    • +2

This business model for these laptop refurb shops is to make the customer do the QA, I bought 2 laptops from ACT and both had problems needing to be returned, but at least the after sales service was excellent

    • +1

We have used Maxdirect for about 25 units, no major issues with the units. Yes they are used units, so not brand new.

We did had a couple of issues that was fixed promptly. Would happily use again based on this.

Are deals that can not be sold even in FB market place is not posted in Oz bargain ?

    • +15

i've read that question multiple times and i'm still not sure what it means, I don't think I know the answer anyway, even if I could work out the question.

      • +2

I believe he is trying to say, if a deal is not good enough to be posted on Facebook marketplace, then it shouldn't be posted on OzBargain.

Or alternatively, he might mean that this deal wasn't good enough to sell on Facebook marketplace, so they had to come and post it here instead.

        • I think you might be right in that interpretation.
and is the implication of that a somewhat damning description of ebay, where these are listed for sale?

"ebay, where items not even good enough for facebook marketplace can be sold"
          ??

          • @AdModnar: and I have no comment about this particular item, just continuing a conversation here

        • Totally different platforms with different audiences. There's some things I can't sell on marketplace that I can sell on eBay, and vice versa. Depends on the category of the item, how much niche it, etc.

    • +2

      you good?

    • Sorry for the typo:
I appears that deals that can not be even sold in FB market place seem to have made its way to Oz bargain!

  • What's the original battery capacity (in watt hours) on this model?

  • +1

Is all the RAM soldered? Or is there a SODIMM slot available? And what about the SSD?

    • +1

Ram is soldered, can not be upgrade, ssd is upgradable.

      Thank you

Just sharing that I still have my e14 gen 2 of this generation and it's going pretty good. It IS a bit hefty though and the screen brightness isn't too high. I have the impression that the T14s that's being sold refurb would still have a fair amount of life left.

  • Does anyone know if these are the 45% NTSC ones or the full colour gamut? Used to have a low colour gamut thinkpad and there was 100% a difference when i swapped to a 100% SRGB thinkpad

  • +2

Just received the computer today, far from 'very good' condition. It has chipped paint on all corners and many edges, and scratches all over the lid. It is not a touch screen as explained above, or if it is it doesn't work.

I would class it more as B or even possibly C grade…

Still testing battery and other things. Will report back again soon.

    • Hi Doug,

My appologie, pelase reach to our customer service, we’ll make sure this is resolved promptly.

      Thank you

      • Here is the response from customer service:

"We’ve reviewed the images, and you’re right — the laptop does show some scuffs on the corners and a few noticeable scratches on the casing. While the unit is fully functional and meets our Very Good – Refurbished performance standards, we agree that the cosmetic condition is not up to our usual expectations for this grade.

Regarding the touchscreen, this model is not touchscreen-enabled, and it appears there was a listing error when it was first posted. We corrected the description shortly after discovering this mistake, and we sincerely apologize for the confusion.

As an apology, we can offer you a $30 partial refund to cover the cosmetic issue. Alternatively, if you prefer, we can arrange a return for replacement or full refund."

Not overly impressed with the offer of only $30 partial refund. Especially considering I wouldn't have purchased it at all if they were just honest and said it was B or C grade initially. And still rather annoyed that the listing here still says it's a touchscreen version.

        • +1

Same, disappointed it’s not a touch screen model as advertised here. I’ve messaged rep as well but no response. Perhaps a partial refund should also be offered in this situation.

    • Well after further issues with the laptop came up, including blue screening after wake from sleep and also being non responsive after logging in (start button failed to load menu and couldn't get process manager). I organised to return the unit. Max direct say they have a better condition unit to replace it with…

The return unit seems to have arrived back with them today according to tracking, so I would hope the replacement unit is shipped speedily. I can't seem to get them to respond to my emails at the moment, I was hoping they could send some pictures to confirm the replacement is actually 'very good' condition.

I will keep posting here until the issue is resolved.

I can't believe I gave this shop another chance :
    Very Good - Refurbished

Top Cover is full of scratches
    Screen has keyboard scratches

This took me 3 seconds to judge.

    • Similar experience here…

If I return it can they provide anything in 'very good' condition or are they all the same or similar condition?

And will I be expected to pay shipping for return? I see they have modified the 14 return in the listing above…

      • Hi there,

The return shipping cost is free.
Please feel free to reach out to us through our website to organize the return or replacement — we’ll be happy to assist you.

I received my unit today and am disappointed that it's not touchscreen. :-(

  • +2

@MaxDirect - similar to everyone here, i bought the laptop thinking it is touchscreen too which as discussed above, it is NOT! can you please advise how do you plan to sort this mis-representation.

  • +1

Received the two I ordered. Both are non touchscreen contrary to the order. Plus one is with heavy keyboard scratches on the screen. The kids were anxiously waiting for these to arrive… Extremely disappointed with the false advertising.
This "deal" has been all over the place since the begining.

  • +1

Just got the two I ordered. Came back on here as they were tagged as touchscreen. They were packed top to top in bubble wrap so they've been rubbing the whole trip. I've just started testing and one won't come out of standby, even after a factory reset. They were for the kids school laptops so I'll probably keep one and return the faulty one. Price was decent so I'm neutral in my thoughts about it all - though not please they were advertised as touchscreen as that's what sold me on them.
