Are You Going to Delete Facebook?

With the recent revelation of the massive data leak to Cambridge Analytica by Facebook as reported by the New York Times from the whistleblower Christopher Wylie, who's had his Facebook account suspended, and potentially Australians being effected, what's your take on this? Are you going to #DeleteFacebook?

EDIT: Just wanted to point Ed Snowden’s tweet regarding this: “Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Their rebranding as "social media" is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense.”

i deactivated back before christmas to 1. avoid christmas facebook and 2. get 2 hours + per day back in my life. ive used that 2 hours to improve my personal study and do reading.

i'll never go back to the waste of time that social media is.

p.s. ive forgotten the names of all my friends' children, and most of my friends who i never spoked to, or never liked what they posted.

    • +18

where do you get your memes from now?

      my use for FB;

      sporting club updates
      memes
      videos of people hurting thermselves

      .

      • -3

9gag got the memes without the awkwardness FB has forcing you to be social.

        • +32

9gag? Really? Or is that a meme in itself?

Reddit or Imgur is where 9gag steals all their content from…

        • +4

@pegaxs: was never claiming where 9gag users get their content from. Was just saying if one does not want the awkwardness that fb inherrently has. Its an option.

        • +2

          @pegaxs:
          O really? more like O'reily

        • +1

@pegaxs: Reddit and imgur for reals. 9gag sucks. Bunch of thieves.

        • @Munki:

This isn't 5 years ago, Reddit has changed significantly and for a long time has banned a lot of the dank memes that conflict with the Reddit hivemind (hard progressive leftism) that facebook pages have become known for.

Facebook is where unadulterated fresh memes have been born for quite a few years now, with Reddit being the one playing catch up due to heavy moderation stifling creativity.

        • @c0balt: I think it depends which subreddit you're in…Also, imgur would definitely have all of them anyway.

        • @Munki:

Imgur has all the memes? That's a very ambitious statement and something very easy to disprove.

Also Imgur doesn't pay people to host memes, Facebook does. There's actually a financial incentive on the FB side for creatives to upload there, as opposed to Imgur where they won't make a cent.

        • @c0balt: imgur has all of the memes. Allllllllll

        4chan.

        • +3

          …always thought 4chan was some malicious/pr0n site……

        • +16

@Zachary: that's where memes are born fam.

        • @FUBR: I thought memes came from reddit…? Well regardless, steam blocks/censors the name…just like how they censor swear words and removes malicious/pr0n links….

        • +4

          @Zachary:
4chan is just an anonymous, no rules message board.
It can be very entertaining and/or very disturbing.
If malicious/pr0n doesn't sound like something you would go investigate, it isn't for you!
It is a bit too wild west for my sensibilities (fans face and swoons).

        • +4

@Zachary: Memes are created on both 4chan and Reddit. 4chan was the original board but is now a cesspool of shit. Reddit is slowly moving into cesspool of shit territory though.

A new website needs to be born.

        • -1

          @ONEMariachi:
Too many libtard and republicant shitposting after so many mainstream news media's propaganda reference

        • @rodinthink: Just unsub from places with too much shit, only go to subs with stuff you're interested in.

        • +1

          @Zachary:INFAMOUS HACKER KNOWN AS 4CHAN

        • @ONEMariachi: What do you mean “now”? 4chan has always been bad b/ro…

        • @rodinthink: This I would believe as the media has to blame someone other than themselves.

      • memes - ozbargain comments are better, friends on skype
Sports - MATCH OF THE DAY on youtube
        People hurting themselves - liveleak

        • sports clubs - i.e. groups/clubs I am personally involved in

          .

        • @Nugs:
Yeah I joined facebook in the first place as pressure from club and associations. Foregone now. I still prefer that 2+ extra hours per day not wasted on FB

      • Nugsi haven't seen you on Ozbargain in ages.

      • -2

How has no one mentioned Reddit!

      • Facebook memes are shit and old use reddit.com/r/dankmemes

      • videos of people hurting thermselves

Go to LiveLeak, you'll never facebook again.

      • Use Reddit. /r/funny
Is where more than half of FB memes come from anyway

      • Nice try Mark Zuckerberg

    • +6

Deactivation is the best. You can keep using Facebook Messenger but friends can't tag you in anything.

      • Wait, really? Is this a thing? I only really use facebook to message people, so if so, im totally on board with this.

        • i thought they supposedly monitor and analyse your facebook messaging too? which is scary.. not sure if google gmail was also analysing emails and convos for picking data. either way it's pretty offputting. not that i have much to hide.

        • +3

          @SaberX:
They do, but im not really concerned about that, on the internet you're pretty much always being analysed. I just want to be able to lose the temptation of wasting hours away on facebook. Time that could be much better spent on ozbargain..

        • @cheese510:

yeah, i still browse aimlessly. need to get onto reading books and improving myself but it is pretty hard to not tune in. i believe times change as you get older. in uni and all it was full of parties, events, photos, updates. I find most people lurk now too and there is alot less content on there.. similarly i've gotten slacker uploading photos. if i went through my uni days every event had photos, now people go out to dinner etc and not a single one is posted up. maybe the odd mobile phone selfie or dinner. not sure if times are maturing or if it naturally occurs as one gets into working life age haha.

if you're not paying for the product/service, you are the product, or your data is.

    • +2

you're only as valuable as the data that comes with you.

      • +1

Yeah but I think a problem is Facebook's data isn't just what you are specifically sharing. The amount of data that can come from just browsing the web as well can be quite irksome.

    • Everybody wants to buy me.

    • So Does that mean Google, YouTube , Wikipedia & OZB have authorization to suddenly kidnap me out of nowhere and smuggling my organ

      • +2

rodinthink's organs $29 AUD from OzOrgans Direct (normally $149 AUD)

        • +1

          High-Yield Investment Organ

    • +1

So, what is ozbargain doing with my data?

      • +3

Selling to the highest bidder to fund scotty's private jet. Unfortunately. No bids at all. Been on the market for a while though. So youre good for now.

        /s

  • +1

Started #deletefacebook techcrunch chrome extension to remove my old data. Will keep new data though.

    • Try the "Social Book Post Manager" extension if you're keen on deleting old stuff.

    • +2

It's funny using a Google product to delete Facebook. Google uses your data just as much as Facebook does.

      • So what you are saying is. Use apple and ios instead? Clearly you are not going to suggest windows os on phones.

        • +2

          Ever heard of Firefox?

        • +6

@Scrooge McDuck: im still using mosaic browser. I hear netscape navigator is the bomb though.

        • @xoom: Yes, Firefox is a decent browser. In case you weren't aware, Mozilla Firefox is the extension of the Netscape Navigator project.

      • +2

Almost every product is going to use our data one way or the other. It’s just about making sure we’re not giving them too much.

      • There is a different between a browser and a social networking website.
Its like comparing apples with lemons

        • +2

Maybe in terms of function, but not in terms of outcome. Things that I search for and browse are soon advertised to me on both Facebook and through Google's AdSense system.

        • -1

@freakatronic: Use Adblock or Ghostery if you want to prevent tracking, what FB has is much more than that.

        • @urahara: Ublock Origin uses fewer resources than adblock does and has better results in most cases. Takes literally seconds to change from adblock to it.

        • @BradleyDS2: That was for a newbie Easier to use than ublock ..Looks flashy as well

        • @urahara: How's it easier?

A newbie will install and then it'll do everything they want out of the box, and if they decide to learn a bit more they will discover the dropper tool for custom blocking and all the other features adblock has.

I find ublock origin to look nice as well, not that I understand why it matters what it looks like.

        • The most underrated comment here

  • No, tbh I would miss all the meme pages I follow.

    • +6

      reddit/twitter/4chan should suffice very well.

      • +4

@FUBR, Agree'd. Considering that 99% of the memes on FB are 12 month old posts from the above mentioned sites..

      • They all have their merits. I still feel like Facebook shows me things I regularly don't see in other places.

    • +1

I got two. One for memes which I open regularly. Other for family which I never open, but keep for storing pictures of trips etc. almost everyone on my family Facebook is unfollowed lol. Use that for tech news mostly

      • Yeah I do the same. I have my personal account for real life stuff and my shitpost account for internet stuff.

  • +5

Meh, I've never posted anything important enough to warrant all the worrying that's happening.
The influence a phone app can have on your life/privacy can be as much or as little as you want it to be.

Don't want people to find out that you're part of the Klan? Well maybe skip that in the "About me" section.
Ashamed of that photo of you in a bikini next to an exceptionally attractive goat? Maybe give it some thoughts before posting it up..

    • +2

We’ve all posted some embarrassing shit back in 2010.

    • Facebook collects a lot more data than what you post. If you have the app installed on your phone, then they know pretty much everything about where you are, and who you're contacting.

  • +6

What is the Facebook thing you speak of?

    • +1

      It's where LooseLips sink (friend)ships

  • +12

I've never had a Facebook account other than a stub with a random name used for obtaining freebies.

  • +5

I removed Facebook almost two-years ago. I took these steps to avoid me falling back into the trap:

    1) change my password to something long… (30+ characters auto-generated)
    2) deactivate account
    3) request to close account.

This meant I could not reactivate it before it was closed as I would not remember the password.

I also recently got rid of Instagram.

As someone said recently, perhaps Snowden, Facebook et al are data collection companies masquerading as social media. No more, no less.

    • +3

Oh that's just the tip of the iceberg. :)

      • +20

        or the Zuckerberg.

        • Zuckerberg: Slovakian for "tip of the iceberg".

          (not really)

        • @CocaKoala:

          More like Sugarmountain in Yiddish…

    • +6

We used to call them “surveillance companies”. Nowadays they’re branded as “social media”.

      • +1

Well, to be fair I didn't know any "Surveillance Company" from back in the day which allowed you to send messages, upload and view photographs before.

        • It's cheaper to provide a service in exchange for info than to track people without their permission.

  • I only use messenger to send gifs to my friends

  • +1

I still get some value out of it. But I have reduced my usage since reading an article on how in-dept the tracking FB does.
I uninstalled from my phone and now only access from specific web browsers from my laptop and desktop.

I started learning Italian with an app as a substitute (on my phone).

  • +12

no, i would miss all the people who check-in air airports.

    • +3

I’m sure all your grandmas, bosses, bullies from year 10 will miss when you leave Facebook.

    • +1

Could never understand posting images of your full airline ticket. Surely if your friends dont believe you messaging them you are going somewhere. Then you are either usually full of sh*t or you just like to brag.

See when i and many others go overseas. They don't get the need to make a song and dance number of it.

  • +5

Delete Facebook from your phone. Keep it on your PC. Or, if you must have it on your phone - use it via a browser tab.

    • Yeah turning off location services for the Facebook app is a must. Also to point out, your old user data from 2010 is worth taking a look at and maybe review whether they still need to be there.
