Should mention in the details that this is 2 channel stereo receiver. Not a 5.1. Its not designed to support all the new audio formats or good for use in a home theatre system setup.

    • Yeah I thought it was the 767 :(

    • Thanks for mentioning it, however I do believe even an impulse buyer would check out a specsheet or reviews (which should mention it)

  • bluetooth audio quality. Meh
    cables FTW

    No 5.1, no point.

hmmm…. I think thousands of true audiophiles out there would disagree completely. better go take a read at a respectable hifi website like audioreview.com. this amp rates very highly indeed. in fact, just google this amp and see how many different websites rave about it.

my point is…. 5.1 or 7.1 surround is fine for soundtracks that can take advantage of it (ie MOVIES), but the majority of MUSIC out there is 2 channel…. and 2 channel audio will never sound as good on a surround sound system as it will on a good quality dedicated 2 channel system.

When all you want is crystal clear and powerful left and right sound, a 2 channel system is still king. You want as little processing and degradation of the signal as possible…. just clean and pure amplification. Just take a look at the THD% of even this modest Yamaha amp and compare it to much more expensive surround sound systems. actually- dont bother, there is no comparison :). even when you run surround sound amps in 'stereo mode' the signal still gets too chopped up to be of any use.

long story short- movies = surround. music = stereo.
dont kid yourself into thinking one can do the other.

if money permits, you need both imo :).
a top quality 2 channel setup in the lounge, high power, low THD, perfectly matched speakers, A/B speaker selection so you can wire some speakers outside. RMS measured in the hundreds.

then, in the home theatre, a full surround sound setup…. less RMS per channel, but still high enough to get those explosions sounding just right (matched speakers with a good quality sub to rumble your bones when required).

or you can go the poor mans version and just get a surround sound amp and run it on 'stereo mode' and hope for the best ;).

  • Wasn't this released like 3 or 4 years ago ?

    • yep, and its still got the goods to compete. but people need to remember that there is more to hifi systems than surround sound. watching movies is one thing, but listening to music via high quality 2 channel pureness is the only way to go!
