Best Place to Buy Sliced Deli Meats?

Been enjoying cold meat sandwiches; chicken, turkey, beef sliced for lunches lately but buying the 'primo' pre sliced packets gets abit expensive considering 1 packet is good for about 2 sandwiches.

    @ your local deli…

    • Thought going to a small local deli would be alot more expensive than big supermarkets though?

    • The local delis are super expensive…

You can get them at Woolworths and/or Coles.

    • Much difference between prices? Couldn't even find woolies deli meat prices on their website, coles seemed to be abit cheaper than pre-packaged but more expensive for some products too

    Woolies/Coles/IGA ?

don't buy pre-packaged > go to Coles, Woolies or IGA and buy the amount you want at the deli counter

You get what you pay for. Personally I would not touch pre-packed ham, etc etc. Probably made from imported product and you pay well OTT for what you get.
Your local deli will be able to offer you advice and probably even let you have a sample to taste.

And some of the premium meats are amazing.

I usually roast some extra meat when I cook a roast for dinner. It is pretty easy to get a 2kg chicken for $6 or so, which makes a lot of sandwiches.
I also buy a 1/4 ham and freeze half if I won't use it in a reasonable time - but in practice it gets eaten pretty quickly as people who might have bought their lunch suddenly find time to make it.
I will also cook up a kilo of bacon once in a blue moon.

Those little packs are super costly.

For my chicken, I like to buy top quality chicken breasts, and poach them in a chicken stock.

Makes beautiful sandwiches when thinly sliced.

Ummm YEAH… Go to the deli and get the same meat for HALF the price as prepackaged sliced meat.

  • I prefer buying from my local Italian Deli, reasons being :

    1) They have a better selection.
    2) They will shave it on the spot and shave it to your prefered thickness, I like it paper thin.
    3) They will layer the ham properly when packing it for you, Woolies/Coles simply grab it by the handful and cram it into the bag.
    4) I like supporting local businesses.

It may cost more but its better service.

    • I agree.

Slightly more expensive, but definitely worth it!

  • IGA or woolies deli section.
If I had a niche deli near my house I would go there

  • Come on Ozbargainers - you've got to save a buck! Here in SA you can go to a Foodland deli and buy meat ends for $5/kilo. It can be a bit of a lucky dip/mixed bag, but anything you get is much more expensive when bought alone. Perfect for pizza, pasta, omelettes and other dishes.
