While this is indeed a good price for the Vive, I would like to point out that the RRP from HTC themselves is now $879 (incl. shipping), not $999 as JWComputer's eBay store suggests. Just wanted to point that out.

Edit: Also, the Oculus Rift's 2nd anniversary is coming up on 28th March. There might be discounts on the Rift headset.

  • Is there anything like a wearable, like this I suppose, but not necessarily VR, and it just acts as a monitor, so more or less a TV that you just wear on your head? Does such a thing exist? I thought Sony was doing something like that but I haven’t heard anything for a while? So what I’m thinking wouldn’t need any special processing, it would just plug into your XB1 or whatever much like a TV does.

    • So basically a VR headset that has HDMI in? I think they exist

      • Well yeah, more or less. Just had a google, looks like there was a Sony OLED one which is silly expensive, or cheaper LCD options which may or may not be ok but maybe not so great for long periods. Seems like maybe cause of VR all of the decent tech is going towards that and not this sort of thing.

        Thanks for the reply though.

        • Yeah I'd honestly enjoy 2 high density screens just mirroring what I plug into it, this would allow me to watch my programs or play my games in bed without the light bothering my girlfriend.

@Salmando: that’s basically what I was looking for. I think that a wearable makes more sense for me than a TV, but the options I saw didn’t look super polished I guess.

Yeah, the idea that I could keep playing F4 in bed without bothering anyone is tempting, however maybe governments have conspired to ensure such devices aren’t highly advertised elsewise people such as myself would never leave the bed and become a new slug like human hybrid?

@Jawanzar: you might be into something. My constant adjustments and arm pain holding my phone in bed forces me to abandon my happy place and venture outside to work.

Wonder if there is an app that might work with Google cardboard to make this a bit of a reality? Is there such thing as a wireless HDMI connection? Send the devices output straight through my router to my phone?

          Maybe we should make this?

        • @Salmando: Not 100% sure if this will do what you want, but check out trinus VR, allows you to send PC signal to Google cardboard VR headset via wifi.

        • @Salmando: I’m all for it. We’d be like the colonists in Wall-e who have those awesome floating recliners.

        • @Jawanzar: You could try the RiftCat software. It allows you to wirelessly stream VR content to the GearVR. There are some good freeware apps on the valve store for watching movies that are actually pretty good.

        • @Jawanzar:

Just stared at my phone, and reached the conclusion that a single 2d image may be difficult to focus on a single thing when both eyes are shown the same image goose to the eye.

Might try placing two images together and separate my vision and see if I can actually focus on a 1080p screen close to my eyes.

    • Search Amazon for "virtual screens" or "virtual cinema", there's a lot of these devices that are made for simulating a big screen. Can't speak as to how good any of them are.

      • Thanks for the info, I had a bit of a browse on Amazon and the reviews were mixed. Would be nice to see one in person, but I guess I’m just in the minority in wanting these kinds of devices? I don’t think I’ve really ever seen such a beast in the likes of JB HiFi etc.

    • Apparently the PSVR can do what you're after, if it detects a non-VR HDMI input, it will display it in "cinema mode".

This is the only video I've seen that doesn't mention it needing to connect to a PS4 via USB.

      • Cool, I never considered the PSVR thinking as the video author suggests that they originally thought they wouldn’t be compatible,

Thanks for the link and the info :)

    • Take a look at FPV HMD's (first person video head mounted displays). The RC community has been strapping screens to their heads for years.

  • The Windows MR HMDs are(were?) down to $250USD for the Dell Visor which I think is the pick unless you can fit the Samsung properly …

  • Costs aside, Vive Pro is due out in a month or so for those who want the very best.

    • +3

Well, you're going to need these controllers and the lighthouses to go with the Vive Pro (which is an HMD only at this stage).

  • Honestly I just want to try before I buy, but I've never seen a demo unit anywhere. You would think ebgames and such would put a test unit in store somewhere, even if it just has a fixed 3d video or something playing.

Right now my mind says awesome, but people make it sound bland. Let me try!

    • Try out a Microsoft store, usually have em

    • Our local harvey norman has a few VR stations set up with games. They are not VIVE units but useful nonetheless if you just want to try generic VR

      • +1

Haven't been in a Harvey Norman store for a while. They put me off with their staff constantly asking if they can help. Can't tell if they think I'm stealing, or if they are just really desperate, but I honestly all not comfortable in their stores.

        Sorry for the rant

        • There are a few VR gaming lounges poping up in Melb where you pay per hr to play VR games with friends. Not sure if there're any in QLD

  • Mixed Reality headsets have better resolution.
